since you used cups as an example of how people learn, here's an example of AI not understanding "a glass of wine" because it doesn't "learn". it can only produce based on data input and there aren't enough pictures of me filling up a wine glass at a wedding free bar to weight the training data.

One of the most common arguments you hear from fans of generative ‘AI’ is that it’s not plagiarizing people’s work, it’s just learning like a human learns. So I’m going to break down why that’s just not true, and why it can never be true, with the existing systems. 1/

Five failures of the White House today, from Tim Snyder, author of ON TYRANNY. Unfortunately, Trump does not understand or even care about any of these, and the US is going to pay the price. snyder.substack.com/p/five-failu...

None of us can be sure what will “work.” You try multiple things and find your way in. Read some histories of the Civil Rights Movement by those who participated. They were never “sure” of what would work. Some campaigns fizzled out. But persistence, creativity, determination, and focus were key.

Friend who served in the Army says he’s getting messages from friends still serving saying, “I’m ashamed to be an American.” Utterly disgusting.

3011 - I'm thankful that after a month and a half of coughing, I can finally sing again without cracking or burning my vocal chords. #gratitude

3010 - I called a repair guy—on the phone, in Thai—and felt very little anxiety at all. I'm very thankful for this. #gratitude

I’m somehow on a Heritage Foundation mailing list (😂) and they sent a survey to see what we think of DOGE. Who wants to offer some m-fing feedback?!? secured.heritage.org/the-heritage... Please share with a friend or a thousand :)

The author's mom was in my high school class, and is one of the most deeply kind and principled people I've known. This story of a journey in faith is so rewarding to read, and exemplifies what (I think) Jesus would want us to do. The last paragraph made me cry. www.nytimes.com/interactive/...

This is probably only viable for UK/European time zone people, but if you fit that it’s worth a look.

3009 - I'm thankful I got to see Isaac (and team) win his volleyball game. #gratitude

Despite everything, I'm still talking about writing. Today on the blog? What kind of editing do you need? www.adamheine.com/2025/02/what...

everyone on BlueSky recently

3008 - Cindy and I keep running the numbers as a bunch of our kids start college, and I'm thankful that (1) I have a lot of numbers tracked so we can run them and (2) running them helps us relax a bit every time. #gratitude

oh cool I’ve been meaning to learn anxiety

If you play video games on the highest difficulty, that's great! 👍 But don't give gamers who play on easier difficulty a hard time about it. Everyone likes to enjoy games differently and there is no right or wrong way to play.

In 2015 this person tweeted a joke that has become more than a meme or a viral tweet. The analogy of leopards eating people's faces is an essential part of the language (and in heavy use lately, given everything). I hope Adrian Bott takes great pride in their contribution to our culture.

Cowabunga, dude! The demo for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tactical Takedown is OUT NOW! Grab the anchovies and peanut butter pizza*, and enjoy!! store.steampowered.com/app/3229100/...

There are some great tips here on things you can do to help (especially, but not exclusively, if you live in the US). I wrote down 9 of them that I can realistically do. thewhitepages.net/p/thirty-lon...

Proud of the US Army Chorus right now. www.youtube.com/watch?v=pIQh...

3006 - I'm thankful Anica likes Switchfoot mainly because of me and my playlist. #gratitude

3005 - I'm thankful Isaac, Fai, and I finally got to play Gloomhaven again (even if we did lose the scenario for the second time). #gratitude

An important thread.

3004 - I'm thankful I stopped everything to talk to my daughter about what was bothering her so much. #gratitude

What can you do? Here's one thing:

3003 - I'm thankful my daughter Sarah is back to visit from Bangkok. 💖 #gratitude

A cool historical fact I learned today is that globally, but especially in the Western Christian tradition, regicide is historically pretty common - between the years 600 and 1980, approximately ~14% of Western monarchs was killed, or deposed and then executed, by their subjects.

🗣️ @aoc.bsky.social out fighting for the people & federal workers: “Every day our job is to wake up and say ‘what can I do today?’ — There is no act too small. Every action matters.” 🇺🇸

3002 - I'm thankful that hourly pay means I get automatically compensated when something takes longer than anyone thought it would. #gratitude

It's elementary school-level knowledge of how the US gov't works: legislative makes the laws, judicial interprets the laws, and executive carries out the laws. But he has already used executive orders to effectively make laws, and now, he has signed an order declaring only he can interpret laws. 1/2

Been thinking about this aspect of history a lot lately.

3001 - I'm thankful for the words of Sam Gamgee. #gratitude

3000 - I'm thankful for the emotional resources I've gained in the last couple of years, enabling me to process even very old triggers that appear out of nowhere. #gratitude

Thinking a lot about who I'm writing for (and who I'm not). Today on the blog: www.adamheine.com/2025/02/who-...

2999 - I'm thankful I went to my first murder mystery party (a thing I would never have been able to opt into in years past) and that my date was my favorite person. #gratitude

2998 - I'm thankful for Remnant II and that I can play it with my brother and son. It's just as fun as the first (if not more). #gratitude
