Reform say Nathan Gill, charged with bribery to boost Russia against Ukraine was never a member of the party. Yes, he was one of their candidates for Senedd, and leader in Wales - but never a 'member'. www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2025...

Just reached 290,000 followers here on Bluesky, and, well: Wow. Thank you for being part of my experience here. To celebrate this really cool milestone, I've donated to Black Girls Do STEM, because we need diversity in STEM fields more than ever these days. Onward! bgdstem.com

So many people assume they’d do the right thing in this situation but never do. From bullying people who speak out to failing to investigate serious claims quickly and effectively, while hiding their proactive complicity. It’s shocking how easily people are punished for raising any concerns.

Our frogs are back! 🐸 Or at least they were, first thing yesterday morning (21 Feb), with upwards of a dozen across two ponds. When I went back with a camera, no sign of them, and no sign this morning. ☹️ Still here's an archive pic from exactly four years ago to the day. #UKWildlife 📷 #NoSpawnYet

This amused me. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

THIS IS HUGE! Researchers at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center say results of a Phase I trial of an mRNA vaccine aimed at preventing pancreatic cancer show promise. The vaccine PREVENTED the cancer from coming back in patients who had already received treatment for MORE THAN three years. 🧪🧵⬇️

An interesting use of the word 'controversial' and one I will be adopting, as in sentences like "The men, who made a controversial request that bank tellers put unmarked bills in bags at gunpoint,..."

A common comment at my annual MOT is that I need to brake harder. As it tends to be regen that slows the car, the brake pads get rusty, because it's electromagnetism slowing the car.

The manifesto is great, including: 'Read the King James Bible, and Dickens, & poems by Shelley, & Marvel Comics &thrillers by Chester Himes and Dashiell Hammett. Look at the astonishing things you can do with words. Note the way they can conjure up whole worlds in the space of half a page.'

Nectar-dwelling yeasts modulate the ecology of plant-pollinator interactions through different mechanisms. This preprint shows that they can abolish among-plant variation in nectar features, which become extended phenotypes of those yeasts genotypes inhabiting the nectar 🧪 doi.org/10.1101/2025...

Just what constitutes a technosignature? The possibilities go far beyond radio & Dyson spheres. New paper digs into what may eventually be detectable, quantifying the possibilities. Fascinating work that pins down what we do know, & what we don't. www.centauri-dreams.org/2025/02/05/q...

NASA did a feature on me last year. It was up this weekend but now when you click on the link you get a 404 message.

I honestly really don’t care about all the false positives from the reported bad word NSF list (yeah, my grants will be hit too). It’s the true positives I worry about. Grants that serve a congressionally mandated bipartisan broader impacts or other need where the work won’t get done.

HOLT SHIT, THIS IS *INCREDIBLE*. An actual treatment for prions! That's fucking ASTOUNDING. Those things are goddamn TERRIFYING.

Science is political. It wouldn't necessarily have to be partisan. But when one party is opposed to science-based policy, scientists have a choice between saying "you're right, thoughts and prayers are probably as effective as reducing carbon emissions" or saying "fuck that."

That really is quite the headline, from the pretty right-wing Wall Street Journal.

Finished "The Return of the King" audiobook, except the appendices. Andy Serkis does an excellent job across the series, but I'm finding the appendices a challenge. Also enjoying @shire-reckoning.bsky.social

Probably the wrong time of day to ask but: While US public universities may receive federal funds, they're not federal institutions themselves are they? So for none-federal funded positions they can maintain DEI if they choose?
