β¦the gulf coastβ¦and that gulf is calledβ¦? The gulf of fucking Mexico.
What an apt metaphor, the sinking of the United States, once a juggernaut, now the lost city of Atlantis. City of Atlantis to be renamed by an EO later.
That is a distraction. maybe the next hurricane can bring back up to the beach, that would be another distraction, that time from the fact there's no fema anymore
Shouldn't they wait for their most important passenger -- Donald Trump. I'm sure he would want to 'experience' the Gulf he's trying to rename first-hand.
This has been bandied back and forth for decades. Poetic timing but literally nothing to do with anything going on today (besides people not caring about history)
I spent a good 5 minutes last night watching a TikTok loop simulation of how the OceanGate Titan imploded laughing at the billionaires and feeling sad for the son.
Appreciate the correction. One of those "I think I knew that but forgot that factoid but maybe never learned it" things. There are some great documentaries on youtube about the challenge.
? Why
Like I get the whole βdonβt sink itβ and Iβm on that side too generally, but theyβre not just *sinking* it, theyβre sinking it to become an artificial reef for oceanic population
I did the same thing at first. What's so bad about sinking the ship? And then I saw the name and it all clicked. The US is sinking. Both literally and metaphorically
and it is about to be sunk into the Gulf of Mexico.
The metaphor is that the United States (the country) is also sinking, and part of the irony is that sinking itself in the newly named 'Gulf of America' seems fitting for what is happening.
unfortunately (unless the plan has changed since I last looked) it's just being made into an artificial reef as a diving attraction, not for ecological reasons
I sailed from LeHavre to NYC on the SS United States as a teenager in the mid-60s. Mostly US military families rotating home. Biggest 5-day party of my life.
The decay of journalism - the horrible overuse of inflammatory words, misinformation, laziness and horrible grammar!
Either all professional and good journalists are fired or AI has taken over!
This is a national tragedy. I canβt imagine a more horrific metaphor for our country right now. As Americans, we need to all chip in and save the SS United States. Imagine if 150 Million people donated 1$ to save her. Letβs make this happen!
Honestly, because it's the USS 'United States' his pea brain probably goes 'I can really score points with the rubes stopping them from sinking this for woke.'
A BIG BEAUTIFUL BOAT AND THEY ARE SINKING IT HAVE YOU HEARD?
Two counties in the Florida panhandle paid a fortune for that piece of junk. They want to sink it to attract millions of divers. To the politicians in part of Florida, it's all about the tourists dollars and screw both the military and the citizens.
It's hard to believe that there is not value to be captured by salvaging the steel. Perhaps Trump could give a special immigration visa to the people who do this work in Sri Lanka and elsewhere.
From what I gather shipbreaking is more a cost of doing business than a money maker. Plus itβs incredibly dangerous with zero precautions for workers. For their sake and the environmental benefit, using it to seed new reefs sounds a lot better.
π΅ oh they built another ship /
called the s.s. Titan 2 /
and they thought they had a ship /
that the water could not go through /
so they christened her with beer /
and she sank right off the pier /
it was sad when the great ship went down π΅
These writers suck. The plot makes no sense! As if someone who promised to do such stupid and terrible things would get elected. And then everyone just goes along with it. Worst writers ever. The USA season 47 is by far the worst. Boooooooo
Wow, interesting! What about fuel remnants and all the polluting chemicals? Are sunken ships specially prepared for their next life as artificial reefs? I might have to do a deep google dive π€ Thanks for tickling my curiosity!
Theyβve been trying to refurbish it forever. Actually a super interesting story. It was the fastest ship of its kind but was finished right around the time that transatlantic jet service was beginning so it didnβt do well. Owners could raise funds to bring it back and the dock fees were huge.
"A symbol of the United States of America in more ways than one... a miracle of cooperation... It took the world to build this cathedral of transportation. So is it with the Republic whose name it bears! Democracy spells cooperation; it calls upon each citizen to give his best for the common good."

Iβm so tired.

So it's a boat called the S.S. United States
and it is about to be sunk into the Gulf of Mexico.

Thanks :)

I'm betting it won't survive the trip.

O mighty ship of state
1) Most refer to the GOM as simply "the Gulf" and not the full name.
2) This has been planned since last year, if not longer.
3) It's been out of service since 11/14/69. All attempts to restore have failed over and over again.

We were coming back from being stationed in England.
We on boarded in Cork.
Much worse.
So sheβs going to become an artificial reef.
The S.S. United States was built 1950-51 and still holds the record as "the fastest ocean liner to cross the Atlantic Ocean in either direction."
