This is truly shameful. Even China and Iran abstained. The US has put itself in the company of some of the worst states in the world - Russia, Belarus, North Korea. Hungary showing its true colours as Russia's Trojan horse in the EU as well.

OMG, Frank Bidart:

I was just told that I have to remove “climate” from the title of an ongoing grant if I want to keep it. And publications from that grant cannot include “climate” and other forbidden words. I can’t believe I’m writing this from the United States of America. #AcademicSky

If I just read one million more posts tonight, I will have complete control over what comes next

To me the cool thing about this image is that the sprinkling of blue stars are in the foreground, some 5 million light years away, while all those gorgeous colorful swirly galaxies are almost unimaginably more distant, out in the far depths of the cosmos. More info: www.stsci.edu/contents/med...

Every time I talk to a layperson about Jonathan Haidt: "what a great thinker, amazing research!" Every time I talk to a scientist: "this is all gibberish, he gets everything wrong"

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and a horse that solves crimes

Cutting it a bit fine, but here’s my review of the year in neuroscience for 2024 The eighth of these, would you believe? We’ve got dark neurons, tiny monkeys, the most complete brain wiring diagram ever constructed, and much more… Published on The Spike Enjoy! medium.com/the-spike/20...

Absoluter Wucher!

Apropos of never ending discussions about whether ANNs are "good" models of the nervous system, here is a slide I present to masters students showing a network that is found in motor control circuits *across phyla* (that's pretty ubiquitous!) I ask them to guess what it does...

When social media sites tell you moderation has limits I want you to know there was a time when you could only find the worst people on obscure forums created for being offensive because everywhere else moderated them into those corners.

I've written about what dying typically looks like - not as a 'pro' or 'anti' AD piece, but in the spirit of confronting a taboo. We've lost the easy familiarity with the patterns of dying that existed when death typically occurred in people’s own homes. Let's talk about it 🙏 @newstatesman.com

Bluesky has made it. I can once again explain very online things to my not very online wife and have her stare at me, bewildered. We’re back baby!!!!

Somebody’s definitely going to hell here, and for once it’s definitely not me.

We were actually "unknown" for it, but for years @neuroshea.bsky.social and I ran the bsdneuro account, which now rests in a grave befitting Bob (and his cortex).

Our #OpenScope collaboration with the @alleninstitute.bsky.social is now up in J Neurosci! #neuroskyence #brains tl;dr: the responses to violations of a pattern in sequences of images evolve differently in apical dendrites and somata of V1 pyramidal neurons: www.jneurosci.org/content/44/5...

You saw the headline, now look at what happened when scientists actually evaluate the headline

Interesting! A bordering-on-mainstream hobby that is a development of murder mysteries, combining deeper elements of larping: www.youtube.com/watch?v=6_dl...

1/6: Published today in Clinical Psychology Review…   We examined validity reporting practices for the Reading the Mind in the Eyes Test (RMET) across 1461 studies, which revealed serious concerns about the validity of test scores in this voluminous literature. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

A very interesting first-person account of living with schizophrenia by philosopher Michael Dickson: doi.org/10.1093/schb...

Nice study on the long-term outcomes of chronically depressed patients after cognitive-behavioral analysis (CBASP) or supportive therapy. The researchers found that only 16% of patients achieved stable long-term remission, another 37% had mild residual symptoms.

What are your top 4 favorite illustrations from this year?

Our meta-analysis (Cristina de la Malla & Aster Joostens) of 36 studies suggests that the contrast sensitivity deficit in schizophrenia is due to medication (osf.io/preprints/ps...)

This is wild. Polish rail equipment manufacturer effectively making their equipment pretend to be broken when it goes in for its maintenance window. Hackers working for the vendor running the repair concession figured it out.

Impactful quote from Kahneman in NYT Gino vs Bloggers article. In "Thinking, Fast and Slow" (2011) he wrote: "When I describe priming studies to audiences, the reaction is often disbelief. [...] The idea you should focus on, however, is that disbelief is not an option." Now it's the default.

For every like I will make the researcher more tired

This absolutely beautiful blog post describes the author receiving an “alien in a can” at age 8 and was told to never open it lest the alien dies. He compares his experimentations to efforts in psych science to draw inferences about psych states. www.davis-stober.com/post/alien-i...

Lots of people know that prehistoric sea turtles got big, but it can be easy to underestimate just how huge these things got. The largest verified specimen of a modern Leatherback turtle weighed in at 1,433 lbs, but this Archelon would have been closer to 11,300 lbs. #scicomm #paleosky #paleontology

Further evidence that universal school-based mindfulness lessons are not effective for improving adolescents' mental health (in this case anhedonia and emotional distress) www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...
