Pretty sure he foresaw exactly the situation we're in when he wrote it.

Plenty of legal actions have commenced already with zero effect. Federal court
rulings are enforced by Trumpâs executive branch. Even if a civil ruling were enforced, wouldnât put a dent in Muskâs net worth & would be slow. Only hope is state AGs filing CRIMINAL charges agains Musk for state crimes.

I'm usually on team âNever attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity [or incompetence]" and would love to think that this is even a large part of the explanation here. Not sure I can get there when Vance, Vought, Musk et al seem to have a goal of defying the courts but đ€đŒ

I mean, the existing system is probably protected via source code control. Even if they gave Elez commit access to their source repository, that would not give him the ability to rewrite history.

Any reasonably complex software project is done using source code control these days. They should be able to revert any changes. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Source_...

Lack of knowledge of a language is much less of an impediment to making changes than it used to be. An LLM can create syntactically correct code that the person operating the LLM cannot or won't bother to understand or verify. Even the best LLMs get a LOT wrong. 100% this is what they're doing.

The teens & twenty somethings altering the treasury payment system, getting access to nuclear secrets and downloading personnel record are the distraction?!?!? Can't wait to find out what the real crime is!

Could be technically true: they set him up as a database user with read-only access, so he can't run SQL INSERTS/UPDATES directly on the database via a user. But if he also has the ability to alter code, commit and push it live, THAT can alter data with no limits. A distinction without a difference.

Wait WHY would Wyden, or you, accept the idea that this is read-only access when thereâs detailed, credible reporting from multiple outlets that they are actively altering code to allow themselves to control payments and cover their tracks? www.techdirt.com/2025/02/05/a...
comment in response to

Yes but the point is these âgovernment employeesâ are going to use this not only to enrich themselves but to punish their political enemies by withholding payments. And I donât mean individuals but, say, the state of California.
comment in response to

I think it is clear from this and other reporting (see talkingpointsmemo.com/edblog/musk-... as well) that this specific programmer is altering the software, so this goes well beyond "read only" / data theft.

Introducing a new law (that's doomed anyway) implies that it's not already illegal! Instead of this counterproductive, embarrassing crap, go to the Treasury building and bring some cameras! Like, NOW!

On a personal / company level Trump was happy to default on debt but he cares about spooking the financial markets. Maybe the only thing he cares about. This is why he's backing down on tariffs.

I see mentions of the Treasury stuff in the presentation but it feels like a tacked on afterthought. I know itâs all a five alarm fire but the main ask should be to stop him! If âdeletingâ payments is a thing, itâs all over.
comment in response to

Is it really enough to focus on a confirmation hearing while Musk is illegally shutting down payments? Direct action by Democratic senators is one of our only hopes to stop him, and I'm concerned that every day we let go by normalizes this coup.

Nice to see this but your editors put it under "Weekend Reads"?!?!? Here's a fun little nugget for your Sunday afternoon - there's an authoritarian coup happening RIGHT NOW and no one is doing a thing to stop it!

Federal law enforcement is all executive branch - FBI etc. - so, they report up to Trump and our new FĂŒhrer Elon. Unless Schumer and Elena Kagan can personally go in there and tackle him, um, no one.

Do you think Bessent is on board with this? AFAIK he's not a hardcore ideologue. I read that he gave Elon the keys. But could he possibly be on board with actions that risk tanking the US credit rating? The tariffs are bad enough but this may not be reversible. bsky.app/profile/jame...

Gotta feel like Wall Street isnât on board with this ⊠other than some Big Short types who are seeing this as their moment. Can someone (you?) present this specific scenario to Bessent? Trump may like this technique himself but doesnât want to crash the stock market.

I really wish it weren't so. ActivityPub, the protocol underlying Mastodon, is far from perfect but would be a much better foundation for federated social media. I don't have any skin in the game, I just saw a small window for open social media due to Musk backlash but this initiative won't work.

I hate Elon more than anyone but he didn't inherit anything - his father is still alive! His father gave him and his brother about $20K to help out with their first company which doesn't exactly make him a "nepo baby". Hate him for a million reasons but don't spread misinformation.
