When @propublica.org first published data and reporting on the tens of thousands of Native American human remains and artifacts held by museums and universities, compliance with the nation’s 30-year old repatriation law shot up. Today, we update the data to show where thise institutions stand now.

A google sheet that is keeping track of graduate admissions freezes and reductions. I cannot vouch for the accuracy of this information, but this is bad. This will do significant damage to the STEM training and future workforce. docs.google.com/spreadsheets...

Graduating during the pandemic slowed down my process and is part of why I did two postdocs. Now as a first year faculty, all the federal grants are frozen. I love the work I do but this has all of us questioning how much www.science.org/content/arti...

An unverified list of REU & similar summer research cancellations. About a week ago, I posted on Bluesky about 1 program w/o identifying (it's on this list). Not as long as I thought it would be and I have a few students who have offers for this summer so far. www.reddit.com/r/REU/commen...

This will devastate HigherEd paths for the majority of my students (~62 % are pell recipients). More loans, nope. My general advice, if you have > 10-15k/yr in loans, then strongly consider not attending. Work, save money. Then, go full time, crush classes and chase scholarships for yr 2-4.

1. UPDATE The NIH is still blocking most ongoing scientific funding over concerns about DEI, according to NIH sources and internal NIH correspondence. The freeze has continued even after top NIH officials acknowledged that continuing to block the funding would violate a federal court order.

Theoretical physicist who also does research in humanities using critical theories. It’s interesting how when it comes down to it, no one is mad at quantum field theory being confusing — for physicists too — but they’re mad at humanists for also having analytic frameworks that take time to learn.

Since Nate Silver is out there showing his whole ass again, important to note that discussions about people's IQs are eugenicist

I sit on a committee for the Excellence in ScComm awards. This afternoon, I wrote to my fellow members that unless & until @nationalacademies.org “actively combat political censorship instead of capitulating to illegal, racist demands, I will not participate in any further service on their behalf.“

SCOOP: The National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine, arguably the nation's most powerful scientific organization, is bending to political pressure and removing terms like "health equity" from pending reports. Members are not happy. Story by me: www.statnews.com/2025/02/20/n...

Just saw an email sent to a student of mine from a REU canceling their program due to staffing & federal research funding uncertainties. A REU was when I internalized my science ID & applying to grad school. If this continues, it will devastate my students #1 pathway to STEM careers.

AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Firings are happening right now at the National Science Foundation. Essential staff are being cut. This isn’t about the budget. If it was, they’d be going after the military (17%) or state appropriations (38%). NSF is 0.7% of the federal budget. All federal employees make up only 4% of the budget.

I want to see the American Geophysical Union (AGU) continue its awesome work on justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion. This thread is a call to AGU and AGU members. 1/

NEW: NSF confirmed that they fired 168 employees today, out of their staff of ~1,500 feds. This includes some people who'd finished their 1-year probationary periods, which were extended to 2-years last month without explanation. More to come.

In seminars/talks for 10 years, I have been saying that "my job would not need to exist" if we adopted the research based, best practices on student development and hiring/retention in STEM careers. Read the article. It's spot on.

For over 20 years, I've been at schools affiliated w the Council of Independent Colleges; in my experience, CIC has been an unflinching advocate for higher education. So I'm unsurprised, but still heartened, to see this from CIC president Marjorie Hass today. www.insidehighered.com/opinion/view...

Appreciate Dartmouth for highlighting our recent work! Recognizing Indigenous rights in our environmental data is not only good for the communities whom the data pertains to, but also produces better science that is grounded in the expertise of the communities that steward these data relations.

Thread.

Appropo of nothing, I just shared this 2 min video with my students so they know what the recent past looked like and their potential future as parents, health/science professionals, and as members of our society. #GoodTimes youtu.be/AW0gsP3EgDI?...

New, from @propublica.org Taxpayers and charities subsidized much of the science that led to Zolgensma. Yet that support came with no conditions for the companies that brought the drug over the finish line, even when it came to setting a price: $2M+ for a single dose!

Finally deleted twitter. I will miss the real time sports highlights. The other professional, humor, news, and educational value of the site left when the apartheid Clyde and the bots took over.

Sharing this a student who just interviewed to do a PhD there. It has to be a factor in their decision to go there or not. Note: student has offers from other schools.

Here's why your education friends had a real rough one today. It's... it's the entire education data collection apparatus of the United States. www.edweek.org/policy-polit...

The ACS has deleted its website on Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Respect. And with that move, have shown they are worthy of none of the latter. People ask why no-one stands up to fascists, this is why - they are too worried about their own standing to challenge it. www.acs.org/about/divers...

The main DEI page from @agu.org has been modified to take diversity out of the title. Glad to see it's not deleted entirely, but hey AGU, we're watching what you do and remembering the big game you once talked about supporting your diverse membership. Today vs. January

Ok let’s start a list of who is caving and who is stand strong among the scientific societies. 💪: ESA, ASCB 🤬: ASM, HHMI #resist #DEI #science

Welcome Glaucia Del-Rio, our new curator of ornithology! 👏👏👏 🦜🗺️ Along with her curator duties, she wants to establish a collection of cell cultures, both as a scientific resource and as insurance against extinction. More about Glaucia + her work: www.floridamuseum.ufl.edu/science/glau...

Well the HHMI’s Inclusive Excellence 3 is gone. They removed it from their webpage.

Brian's conceptual explanation of Markov Chain Monte Carlo is fabulous!

I was going to respond to the ASM press release after having my coffee, but this is such a better response. ASMs last email was Jan 30 and does not mention taking down IDEAA sites or spotlights on Black, Indigenous, or other underrepresented microbiologists, or anything about DEI. Disappointed.

This 👇🏿👇🏾👇🏽👇🏼

The "Diversity tourists" have been fully exposed.

*this is illegal* FYI 🧪 🔭 ⚛️

ASM website screenshots from the wayback machine in December '24 (web.archive.org/web/20241211...) vs today. Pretty disappointing!! 🧪

It would be nice if people could stop acting like DEI is an only a moral good. DEI strengthens organizations. People from diverse backgrounds bring new ways of solving problems and serving people. DEI isn’t a gift to diverse people. It’s a gift to the orgs that hire us.

@asm.org this better not be anticipatory obedience. I have 5 lab members planning on going to ASM microbe this year. I will absolutely pivot to another meeting if ASM gives in to anti-DEI efforts.

Paul George is available for Anthony Edwards. Just saying.
