This has always been an obvious problem with their slapdash approach. You can temporarily “save money” on paper by deciding to randomly stop paying bills. But if it turns out you needed some of that stuff, it’s ultimately going to be more expensive.

Elon Musk's effort to slash government "led to purchasing bottlenecks and increased costs; paralysis in decision-making; longer public wait times; higher-paid civil servants filling in menial jobs, and a brain drain of scientific and technological talent." www.reuters.com/world/us/100...

People spend a lot of time wondering why the left is worse at using independent media to control the national narrative. A useful exercise is to ask why the left is also worse at selling snake oil and pyramid schemes, because I think the reasons are basically exactly the same.

People don't miss manufacturing jobs. They miss the effects of having 30+ percent union density. And we can build worker power again, with good policies, for the jobs most working class people actually have today rather than hoping mumbo jumbo will make it 1955 again.

Note to editors and producers: If an executive order demands action that is illegal or outside of the president’s authority, then you should not describe it as ordering something. You should say it seeks to achieve some outcome and then note it is illegal or beyond the power of the president.

They’ll never accept it, but everyone who cast a vote for Donald Trump did real, generations-long damage to the United States and the west in exchange for essentially nothing of value.

Another reason it is cowardly to simply obey and let them take over your newsroom or university is that if you don’t they often will be like “well fuck, that was our main idea”

Thoughts on Signal gate, as someone who spent 19 yrs at CIA. I'm thinking of all the times I accidentally brought my phone into the office and had to not only immediately walk it across the massive parking lot to my car, but report myself to security. Do that too many times=real repercussions

Jeffrey Goldberg thinking he was being pranked and then realizing he was actually just in the war plans group chat is such a good microcosm of how it feels to be alive right now, everything seems fake until you realize it’s actually real and incredibly stupid

Watched a thing about coffee makers and how cleverly they are designed with heating elements and bubble valves, truly a marvel of simplicity and effectiveness, but the people who designed the coffee maker never thought they should be in charge of America like Silicon Valley did, they just did coffee

This is horrible to post, but I may as well post it. We are essentially shutting down research operations in my group, which is focused on treatments for pediatric brain cancer. I’m a well funded investigator, and there’s no choice. Science can’t function without the stability of NIH

Walz: I think they hate public education because it’s easier to run an authoritarian government if you don’t have a population that knows.

one thing i keep thinking about is how there is simply no way to design a constitutional system that can resist authoritarian incursion if participants in that system do not actually care that much

I know this is extremely vulgar idealism, but I do think we should try to aggressively reassert the norm that lying is bad. Not in a "Four Pinnochios" fact-checking kind of way, but in a way that frames this kind of lying as moral degeneracy that is fundamentally corrosive to the human spirit.

America is under siege by a surprising force: losers.

Looks like the Business President is responsible for eight of the ten biggest daily point losses in the history of the Dow Jones

you’re fired. wait you’re rehired. email us a list of things you’ve done today wait forget it you’re fired again. come back your job was important. you’re fired. or hired. come in to the office. wait the office has no computers go home. we are the department of government efficiency.

I think it’s fascinating how this administration’s guiding principle on every single policy is just “be evil.” Starving children? Take away their food. AIDS patients? Take away their treatments. Refugees from conflict zones? Deport them. Nations under attack? Cut off assistance. VA? Fire everyone.

A Supreme Court Justice who rules that President Biden can’t forgive student loan debt without an act of Congress, and rules that President Trump and Not An Official Position Musk can cancel any Congressionally-enacted spending they personally dislike, that Justice clearly isn’t ruling based on law.

the vice president of the united states is a groyper who spends his online time following nazis and esoteric reactionary influencers is true and yet the press seems completely disinterested in it

It took seeing adult bullies to understand that my childhood bullies didn’t even really want to hurt me, they just wanted to feel powerful and how I felt about it wasn’t even in the equation. I can’t imagine someone not outgrowing that, but apparently it happens quite a lot!

Given that the Trump people did nothing to induce Russia to end the war, it’s fair to conclude that the whole idea of pursuing peace was just a pretext to renew relations with Russia.

relatedly, why is the entire political press completely uninterested in the verifiable fact that JD Vance has close relationships with online nazis?

Every day I have to hear about some asshole

morality aside: it turns out, as a purely sociological matter, that a politics premised on empowering people who loudly and performatively don't care if discriminated-against Others suffer and die results in surprisingly indiscriminate suffering and death. this needs to be explained to people

I had relatives in Medicaid beds who passed, and I am grateful they did not live to see their lives destroyed. People simply don't get that their now-impoverished elderly aunt who requires 24 hour care will either be their in-home full-time responsibility, or left homeless to die on the street.

Well-meaning articles saying "Musk is searching for Social Security fraud; it's not common though" need to stop even this level of pandering. He is NOT "searching for fraud." He is MAKING FALSE ACCUSATIONS OF FRAUD so that he can weaken/kill the program. Tell the truth or stfu.

I do not believe in any tech product where the devs want us to view it with some form of religious awe, a divine gift redefining human experience and bequeathing knowledge unto us humble land apes. I believe in a tech product where the devs are like “this is handy for planning breakfasts”

Portuguese editorial cartoonist Zez Vaz reaches back to Tiananmen Square to call on American defiance.

Correct. If the birthdate field contains corrupt or mismatched data, it defaults to 1875-05-20, which serves as a flag. May 20, 1875, is the day the international standards and metrics treaty was signed. Everything is a conspiracy when you don’t know how anything works.

guys will get away with beings described as a business genius, and then you look at what their business genius actions are, and they're all variations on "stop paying rent and use the money saved to beat the case in court for not paying rent."
