The next time someone calls a reporter "biased" or an activist — especially someone who is a woman, a person of color, LGBTQ+, an immigrant, and/or disabled — ask them to articulate the difference between bias and expertise: longreads.com/2018/03/29/i...

My heads? Talking.

Bezos is not acting out of fear. He is participating in a political project that benefits him. This distinction is important.

“I’m wearing it as a public figure, to give permission to everyone else who needs or wants to mask…to remind everyone else that this thing isn’t done with us yet. So, if the sight of me, in my mask, makes you angry or uncomfortable? Perhaps, instead of making fun of me, you should ask yourself why”

The 1923 Oregon legislature was colloquially known as the "Klan legislature" because the majority of members were either Klan members or sympathizers. One bill they passed required that history education be suitably patriotic, outlawing materials that spoke "slightingly" of the founders.

For those following the story of unidentified men violently dragging a protester from a local Idaho GOP meeting, it turns out they were from a private security firm called LEAR Asset Management. But neither the sheriff (who watched it all go down) or the GOP will take responsibility for hiring them.

In light of everything happening, I wrote about how the KKK in the 1920s felt unstoppable, about the people that fought against them anyway, and about how fascism always fails. dansinker.com/posts/202…

I appreciate this response from Ed Yong on why he requests that people mask at his events. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/22/m...

I’ve finally calmed down about Kevin O’Leary being invited to talk about Canadian annexation on CBC Ra—ARE YOU KIDDING ME???

The funny thing about Cross Country Check-Up both-sidesing annexation is that they did not do anything wrong, the problem is that they followed their journalistic standards too well When journalism is not rooted in any moral values beyond “objectivity” and “balance,” this is the natural outcome

Thanks to @sketchesbyboze.bsky.social for reminding me of this Ursula K. le Guin quote.

watching the episode of Voyager where Neelix is brought back to life + then has to contend with the possibility of not being able to reunite with his friends and family in the afterlife on the day I attend a dear friend's annual memorial gathering...why does this show have to hit so hard sometimes 😭

Seeing these garbage dinosaur zombie columnists at all the legacy media pumping out trash while good writers leave the industry is infuriating.

my nerves were already shot today so I'm glad we could add an earthquake on too

Wired is working nights and weekends to report and we are able to do that because we have flexibility. But Conde wants us back in the office, without enough space to work. We won’t be able to do this kind of work in an environment that values punching in over the product

Incredible stuff in here: They ID'ed him, in part, by going to court hearings and watching him post

NEW: A couple days ago, Breakdown host Nate Pike announced that he was being court ordered to wipe the Alberta politics show from the web as part of a libel lawsuit from a well-connected Alberta businessman. This development should concern all journalists. open.substack.com/pub/theorcha...

the canada becoming a state bullshit is the thing that’s going to make me fully lose my mind. literally what the fuck is anyone talking about. I’m going to see a statement from 1-3 members of the new pornographers on the timeline in the next four months that makes my cerebral cortex simply shut down

Right now, for a lot of Canadians the temptation is to ignore Indigenous people because the threats from the US seem way more important. This turn to fervent and ignorant nationalism is a mistake. Don't alienate the people who know more about your "country" than you do. Find common cause instead.

The Indigenous People of North America have decided to go back to calling the Gulf of Mexico, “Chalchiuhtlicueyecatl”. It is what the Nahuatl People originally called it as it is the domain of the goddess Chalchiuhtlicue, who is assoc w/water bodies, including the Gulf of Mexico.

"gotcha" is what men say to me when they do not get what I have just said

Ending voting for women is a core part of the Evangelical plan for the country. They have even considered implementing “household” voting where each family only casts one vote (and we know who decides). This is the first step. (Image reposted with ALT)

Musk’s attacks on federal workers pose an existential threat to the whole labor movement, all workers, and the broad Left It’s alarming that most people don’t yet understand the stakes 🧵

When we unionized a few years ago, a lot of peanut gallery types on social media wanted to tell me it would be the end of Wired. Hope it’s now clear (thanks mostly to our insanely talented and hardworking politics team) that it does not work that way. Unions are good.

slow news week I guess, gotta recycle the pro-natalist couple profile

A lone voice called out “No Nazis” While such a statement might be dismissed as heckling, in the case of #Canada's newsest monument, it feels more like a pointed reminder Canadian Heritage can't guarantee no Nazis have been commemorated Latest @thewalrus.ca #cdnpoli thewalrus.ca/did-canada-r...

Certain people get so wrapped up with regulated opioids reaching the illegal market, they forget the point of introducing them: reduce people's exposure to unregulated drugs. Not surprising it's ex-cop Elenore Sturko still driving this.

For my latest, I talked with @ctulocal1.bsky.social president Stacy Davis Gates and artist and educator Silvia Gonzalez about how Chicago teachers are creating Sanctuary Teams to protect undocumented students and other marginalized youth from Trump's aggression. (Includes organizing resources.)
