Wait till he hears about Germany prior to 1871.

How I think I look vs how I look

A friend once described the ideal architectural practice as one where none of the designs are ever built. (More profit, no liability)

My father turned the car around immediately and drove back to where we saw the object. It was gone. We drove back and forth several times and saw neither the shape or anything that would explain it's absence.

One dark winter night, my father and I were driving on a country road when we saw what looked to be a body, wrapped in a sack or a rug on the side of the road. We both saw it and were so dumbstruck that it took a few seconds to check with each other what we just saw.

Need to get him over here to the good place.

I miss that guy. Matt Farwell @HuntClancy / thehuntfortomclancy.substack.com has that energy though.

Lack of an NCO corps certainly helps explain why stormtroopers are such bad shots.
comment in response to post
The fact that there are comissioned officers in Star Wars implies the existence of NCOs. Like stormtroopers certainly must have had a squad leader or something.

It's like a cheat code. Sage brown butter on grits is sublime.

Her lawyer was a fool. All he needed to do is play that song for 10 minutes. Immediate acquittal.

I always read the pronunciation as "f" anyway so the author sounds extra foppish.

Just glad they have a trade to fall back on.

A roommate somehow convinced us using electric heaters in our off-campus house would be prohibitively expensive in the PA winters. We decided to use a coal stove to heat just the living room. We would sneak out late at night and pilfer coal from a giant pile outside the university steam plant.

My roommate let his frat brothers stay at our off-campus house over the summer. Apparently, they could not remember what day trash was picked up and took to throwing it down the basement stairs. The entire basement was piled several feet deep when we returned in the fall.

Yeah, Knight Specialty Insurance sounds like a subsidiary of Sheinhardt Wig Company from 30 Rock.

I love buildings like this. It absolutely did not need to have that much design, but did anyway.

The Ted Chaing novella the film is based on: "Story of Your Life" is beautifully written and deeply moving. Arrival makes much more sense after having read it.

She invited me to her gorgeous friend's place. There was a weird vibe. We watched a documentary about poison toads in Australia. They cuddled under a blanket, and asked if I wanted to join them. Me: "No, I'm good thanks." Ten years later. "OH MY GOD!"

If you haven't read them, the "What if?" series of books by Randall Munroe (xkcd) is a lot of fun. a.co/d/ggWV5xE

I think you have to assume a vacuum. Terminal velocity in air is something like 120-180 MPH, depending on orientation. At that speed you would fall between 2.5 - 4.5 days to reach the center of the earth. You would slow toward the center and never make it close to the surface.

I feel this in my bones. I *hate* Christmas music after having worked at a Barnes & Noble with only one CD of "eclectic" Christmas standards. It played nonstop November through January.

My (very WASP) family had a sense that mangos were in some circumstances dangerous. Possibly if they were unripe, or did not have the skin removed? It was never quite clear. Someone brought two home from the Pathmark once and there was a serious discussion on how to prepare them safely.
