"The collapse of society will be a good thing, because the weak will die and strong people like me will survive and prosper" says man who experienced a complete breakdown from which he never recovered because he couldn't go to Home Depot and BW3 for a couple weeks in 2020.

"[I am] Ex Microsoft Responsible AI, I build tech behind ChatGPT, and I lead Green AI at Microsoft. And more importantly: I was wrong 3 times. [...] AI for sustainability is mostly speculative." www.youtube.com/watch?v=5kW3...

I suspect this is a HUGELY underestimated factor in radicalization. If you look at, say, QAnon boards, it’s not really folks looking for scapegoats for their dire material circumstances. It’s middle-class people with boring lives who want to imagine they’re in The Parallax View.

Over on X, simple tweets by my colleague Greg Bluestein of the Atlanta Journal Constitution have been blocked. They were nothing but video of a town hall held by Rep. Rich McCormick R-GA where he was asked questions about DOGE

Non-zero chance adults with ADHD are going to be rounded up and sent to work on farms STO-style to replace the migrant laborers who will be filling up Guantanamo and other detention sites. Grim.

“Elon got root access” is definitely going to wind up in court filings since that’s not what DOJ has been telling judges. Musk just quote-tweeted this, which seems like an admission they’ve been lying in court.

BILLIONAIRE: Ive done it all. This world has nothing for me ???: I can give you the mind & soul of Dylan Klebold BILLIONAIRE: Hm. Jack me in

NEW: An internal email obtained by WIRED from a threat intelligence team monitoring US Treasury systems advised labeling DOGE operatives an "insider threat," adding that it recommended suspending their access "immediately." | www.wired.com/story/treasu...

SCOOP: A US Treasury threat intelligence analysis has designated DOGE staff an ‘insider threat'. An internal email reviewed by WIRED calls DOGE staff's access to federal payments systems “the single biggest insider threat risk the Bureau of the Fiscal Service has ever faced.”

EMERGENCY PIECE: My piece, out at 6 am today, is the exclusive source for the information that Marko Elez HAD fully read & write access and his access got downgraded to "insert only" a "read and limited write" access according to the best available understanding www.crisesnotes.com/day-seven-of...

If you work for the federal government and are tempted to take Musk’s “buyout” offer please know that you’re never going to see that money.

Around 35% of SpaceX’s revenue comes directly from the federal govt. Less than 1% of NPR’s budget comes from the federal govt.

🌎 The Mauna Loa CO₂ record is the gold standard for tracking Earth's rising carbon levels. Since 1958, it has provided uninterrupted data, proving human-driven climate change. 📈 The site is down this morning. This is the latest, dangerous move by the #Trump administration. #ClimateChange

The NYT asked me to write an op-ed on Musk and the Treasury and then took a pass. I hope it will still get read.

Underneath the terrifying takeover of the payments system, the mass firings, etc., there are active impoundments illegal and unauthorized delays to federal spending, happening right now, in real time, that have been a bit memory-holed. So I try to elevate them here. prospect.org/justice/2025...

dems in congress responding to anti-semitism like

the biggest NIMBY, anti-transit nyc city council member is now posting memes about murdering DSA members I am not a member of DSA but this is insane. Vickie Paladino must be expelled from the council.

DeepSeek hasn't removed a single joule of enthusiasm from fossil fuel companies and their plans to exploit AI hype to justify fossil fuel infrastructure Their gas plans were never based on logic, efficiency, technology or real needs, and so DeepSeek fundamentally won't adjust their desires at all

Polling shows that only 16% of Americans have a negative impression of DEI. But at this Atlantic magazine staff meeting, that number seems much higher.

Donald Trump is trying to burn down what's left of the social safety net on behalf of his billionaire friends and Eric Adams has ruled out ever criticizing him in public. This city needs a fighter, not a sycophant.

Trump just defunded Medicaid for 6 million New Yorkers.

Thinking, for no particular reason, about how failed nation-building project in Iraq following the occupation was spearheaded by the same people who are now running the US government into the ground (young Heritage staffers)

now that DeepSeek has completed AI, we hope that Silicon Valley will turn its attention to the next best thing: investing in rural history museums

wow who could have predicted the white house was lying about terms. you're telling me this for the first time

The AI bubble was inflated based on the idea that we need bigger models that both are trained and run on bigger and even larger GPUs. A company came along that has undermined the narrative - ways both substantive and questionable - and now the market panicked that $200bn got wasted on AI capex

Chuck Schumer tweet: if Trump is so serious about getting rid of aliens by any means necessary, why doesn't he release the UFO files? 😜 Gustavo Petro tweet: the souls of Caesar, Tarik, Biohó, and Bolivar visited me and told me to counter-tariff the rabid Yanqui dog.

This fucking guy. Maybe it is mentally taxing for (especially low-income!) people to have to shell out money at every step of the process just to go on living. That, plus the clear stigmatization of mental illness inherent to his comment.

A study of European electoral data suggests that social democratic parties alienate voters by moving toward the political center.

We will not go numb under the barrage of Trump attacks. He wants us scrambling, confused, distracted. Instead we can and will laser focus on collective liberation, on what it takes to get from here to there, on the cultures and institutions we need to create to build a world where everyone is free.

Trump is already alienating European allies and his deportation plans may help push more of Latin America into deeper political and economic alliance with China - which has been making inroads there in the last decade or so. www.nytimes.com/2025/01/24/u...

Suspect China is going to easily pick up the title of next global hegemony given the rate at which the US is burning through its international goodwill

"Israel has dropped more than 85,000 tons of bombs in one year and that is equivalent to almost six bombs that were dropped on Hiroshima"

glad to see @bostondsa.org and all of our endorsed city elected officials opposing Gov. Healey's attacks on the right to shelter. i strongly encourage folks in MA to stand up for some of our most vulnerable neighbors. a quick letter to your legislators is a good, easy way to start

the extent to which the management class essentially everywhere responded to a few years of labor market tightness and labor friendly policies by going all in on the end of american democracy should be incredibly vindicating for any orthodox marxists out there

Just such an obvious and should have been headed off bamboozle to watch Trump lead the discourse into banning TikTok and then become the hero of saving TikTok. We are truly is the reality show politics era and I can’t believe no one had a staffer that explained the bamboozle to them

Happy to have made it out to see @coletteshade.bsky.social talk about her new book, “Y2K”! Turns out that good books can come from scrolling on social media

In which Israel's most read daily newspaper obliquely describes stealing hundreds of millions of dollars designated for starving refugees. To be clear, the Israeli govt used billions of shekels in food and medical funds for Gaza to pay themselves. https://www.israelhayom.com/2025/01/12/1026727/

Occasional reminder that there’s no, “it’s too late, its over” for anthropogenic climate change. Every molecule of CO2 that doesn’t go into the atmosphere makes a difference. Preventing 0.1 degree of warming makes a difference. Every bit of climate resilience we build together makes a difference.

Our seventh most-read story of this year: When companies like Aetna or UnitedHealthcare want to rein in costs, they turn to EviCore, whose business model depends on turning down payments for care recommended by doctors for their patients. Read more (published October) ⬇️

$35 in total at one of my fave used bookstores in Nashville. Reconstruction for $1.50, Empire’s Workshop for $0.50. Gravity’s Rainbow and the Huizinga book make up half of the cost.

From Balzac’s “The Red Inn”: “We enjoy lingering in a becalmed state, a kind of midpoint between the reverie of a thinker and the contentment of a cud-chewing animal, a state that should be termed the physical melancholy of gastronomy.” Such a great image of a delicious meal.

At some point liberals are going to start saying, okay there was a genocide but it’s really the fault of the left for how annoying they were about pointing it out

60 Minutes ran an infomercial for Israeli terrorism & it sparked zero outrage in liberal circles. I wish there was a constituency for caring about this stuff anywhere near what there is for CNN being insufficiently critical of Trump or w/e but racist cheerleading of US-backed violence is bipartisan
