'I have seen landmine injuries from years ago. I have seen men with 100 cigarette burns on their body; women who were separated from their husbands crossing Libya and can now barely speak of it.' An anonymous dispatch from a clinical lead in an asylum hotel. www.the-fence.com/hotel-britan...

In surely unrelated news, the Tony Blair Institute was given $200m by the owner of Oracle, a major AI player.

Minimum wage for a 9-5 full time job (40 hours a week) is, as of today, £25,396 a year for anyone over 21. Which is why it's amazing to see journalism jobs requiring a degree, job experience, and driving licence advertised at a "competitive salary" of £22,380. tindlenews.co.uk/careers/jour...

What happens when you are a natural born people-pleaser… and also a critic? @anyaryan.bsky.social has been called ‘heartless’ for being a theatre reviewer, and yet she hates conflict. Here, she reflects on the competing urge to be honest, and to be liked

Full page of anti-trans bullshit in today's Times. Did they put Kathleen Stock on the rack? Did they get out a scold's bridal? 'Medieval'. Absolute fucking state of her.

The Casals piece in particular is so gorgeous, but a solid week of VAN again - in a good groove at the moment - more to come - join us!!!

Exactly this. Defying almost every prediction, Finland was never swallowed by the Soviet Union. If we look at the root causes of that miracle, progressive policies instituted from the 1920s have to be among the most important reasons, arguably THE most important reason.

New post at On a Pacific Aisle, about the San Francisco concert by the Israel Philharmonic and why I chose not to attend. pacificaisle.substack.com/p/music-in-a...

I'm currently looking at councils charging people for adult care services - interested in speaking to anyone grappling with care charges or active in this area - my DMs are open

A fine of £585,000 for Sussex because they have policies protecting trans people from hate speech. The OfS can go in the bin, Labour can do one for having kept the Tories' culture war and chief inquisitioner Arif Ahmed in his role.

Who wants to know the London Overground line names that almost existed. I bet you all do, it's Bluesky, if this isn't targeted material for this place then I don't know what is. www.londoncentric.media/p/the-reject...

In 25 years of covering national security, I’ve never seen a story like this: Senior Trump officials discussed planning for the U.S. attack on Yemen in a Signal group--and inadvertently added the editor-in-chief of The Atlantic. www.theatlantic.com/politics/arc...

Ohhh I’d been wondering why Ant Middleton had gone full “anti-woke, fuck the government, I’m moving to Dubai”. He hadn’t paid his taxes and had been living off directors loans while trading insolvently!

💥"Every donkey can beat time. But to make music is another story." This week Riccardo Muti returns to the UK after 15 years. I talked exclusively to the last of the big conducting beasts. He also ordered me pasta, and I had a chat with his parrot. www.thetimes.com/article/0807...

sunday bump for my latest VAN piece—for anyone following ongoing LCO, Buxton, Northern Ballet, ENO stories

Something amazing happened to me yesterday. I went to a free concert at a local church - The Gustav Holst Ensemble - & half way through the second piece - Brahms Piano Quartet no. 3 - I noticed that tears were streaming down my face. A moment of absolute beauty. Never known anything like it.

being an indie bookseller in the helltimes has felt both very stable and very stabilizing, and part of me wishes everyone could be on my side of the counter for a little while, because I think it would help some of you be a little less cynical and doomy right now. so here is my VERY anecdotal data:
