The thing you need to understand about Gavin Newsom is that

Glad he continues to reveal himself to be the joke he is - a reminder that this is the man who got caught at one of the most expensive restaurants in America for a birthday party during the Covid lockdown in his state!

We need some better language for pushing back against what the administration is doing. They’re not “ending DEI.” No. They're firing women and people of color in the military. They’re forbidding whole fields of research. They’re erasing trans people from existence.

The examples of research deemed unnecessary focuses mostly on the relationship between climate change and conflict, and research on extremism. All of the social science research being cut amounts to a fraction of the cost of a single fighter jet.

There is literally zero legal authority for Trump to install a new president at the Foundation without going through Congress. The Federal Vacancies Reform Act does not apply to the position. Trump’s people admit that it doesn’t. They are claiming that’s irrelevant and they can just do it anyway.

Some of his readers have asked Mike Masnick @mmasnick.bsky.social why his technology news site, Tech Dirt, has been covering politics so intensely lately. www.techdirt.com/2025/03/04/w... I cannot recommend Mike's reply enough. It's exactly what readers need to hear, what journalists need to do.

Here's to hoping my illustrious governor takes himself out of the 2028 pool now by revealing that he is a knob to a broader audience

If you work at the Washington Post, now is the time to resign. You’re a part of this now.

Hope to see you there

I am increasingly of the mind that one of the most productive things we can do to push back against this mess is welcome everyone, including those with regrets. The comments to this story are dispiriting.

BREAKING: Chief Justice Roberts grants stay, pausing district court order for USAID to pay about $2B in foreign-aid bills by midnight.

It is really hard to watch people willfully tear down an infrastructure that allowed us to double lifespans, drastically reduce poverty, and become one of the richest countries in the world.

Excellent brief to the DC Circuit opposing the Trump admin’s request for an emergency stay in the USAID suspended payments case, which ends with an appropriate level of fury at what the government is doing.

The Washington Post and LA Times editorial pages have gone full MAGA, MSNBC has purged all of its anti-Trump anchors, and Twitter is owned by a literal Nazi. Here's why liberal media bias is still a problem.

Reporter: If you could speak directly to Elon Musk, what would you say? Rep. Jasmine Crockett: Fuck off.

THERE IS NO AMERICAN CONSTITUENCY FOR AN ALLIANCE WITH RUSSIA. Even the GOP hates it. It’s just that Russia, for reasons we STILL do not know, owns Trump.

These people keep setting fires they think they can control but are woefully unprepared for the real consequences

I wouldn’t think “moved to root out diversity initiatives” is a useful phrase for journalism at all, but using it as a euphemism for a purge of high ranking black officers is downright Orwellian.

Following a loud public outcry about job cuts at the National Parks Service — and a relentless media campaign from outdoors enthusiasts across the country — it looks like the Trump administration has blinked. via @jackdolan.bsky.social

In addition to the gutting of federal research funds for higher education, these are the sorts of rules being imposed on existing research. My new piece at Tusk: smotus.substack.com/p/the-attack...

Gift link. A small unelected, secretive crew now has free access to sensitive private data of everyone. And Musk is already publicly targeting family members of judges who rule against the administration. If this isn’t ringing alarm bells, I don’t know what would. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/21/o...

The DOGE firings have nothing to do with “efficiency” or “cutting waste.” They’re a direct push to weaken federal agencies perceived as liberal. This was evident from the start, and now the data confirms it: targeted agencies overwhelmingly those seen as more left-leaning. 🧵⬇️

Literally suing to help another authoritarian who also tried to overthrow his country's government. City on a hill no more.

The National Park Service has removed "T" and all mention of transgender people from the Stonewall National Monument. Trans women were some of the most influential activists behind the Stonewall movement and what followed. 3 articles of clothing laws were why raids happened. Erasure.

"donald trump is a literal traitor" is a pretty common belief in the american security services. it's even a pretty common belief among people who served as political appointees in the first trump administration.

This is a useful (but day-ruining) post on the current situation (it’s a self-coup), including a list of likely outcomes (civil war is possible, but unlikely). Also, @liberalcurrents.com is clear-eyed and becoming part of my daily reading rotation. www.liberalcurrents.com/is-it-a-coup/

NEW: In a move that could jeopardize U.S. election security at the state level, the federal Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Agency put employees tasked with securing elections from foreign threats on administrative leave.

NEW: The USAID Inspector General was fired on Tuesday, a day after his office released a report critical of the impact of the Trump administration’s efforts to dismantle USAID, a source familiar told CNN.

Just got a tip from a guy at the FAA. You'll never believe who is still getting new government contracts while all the contracts at the Department of Education and USAID and other agencies are being nuked from orbit.

Elon is unilaterally breaking the system, all three branches in fact. 1. The legislature's appropriations are being destroyed. 2. The judiciary's rulings are being flatly ignored. 3. The duly elected executive is not actually in charge.

Levitsky and Way published an article *today* about how we are on the cusp of competitive authoritarianism, but it may already be out of date...

Huge layoffs at the National Democratic Institute, a major funder of democracy and rule of law programs, today.

The most sober, respected, you could fairly say establishment normie academic experts are saying it as loudly and plainly as they can: the Constitution is collapsing right now unlike anything in American history.

New day, new lawsuit against the Trump admin: latest challenging the halt of USAID funds, brought by plaintiffs incl. private contractors, small business group, nonprofits and the American Bar Association (gets $ for int'l rule of law programs) assets.bwbx.io/documents/us...

From independent @USAID sources, >800 contracts and awards are being terminated en masse – with the procurement team subject to hourly checks on speed of executing terminations. The pace has exceeded the ability to confirm whether lifesaving assistance or any Congressional mandate is affected.

What's happening in America is that, in the most literal sense, internet trolls have taken over the government.

The richest man in the world declares that the national government no longer has a Department of Education as elected officials are blocked from finding out what is going on. Factual descriptions of American government right now sound positively dystopian

Seems like grounds for impeachment at the very least...oh wait

Over 200,000 records from USAID’s Development Experience Clearinghouse, a publicly available online repository documenting nearly 50 years of USAID’s projects, is gone. Taxpayer property stolen by Musk and his cronies. It’s a crime.

Asked a seasoned State Dept employee how Marco Rubio has been received so far. "He has a minder, like a Trump campaign minder." A what? "Someone in his office, not of his choosing. [Like with Tillerson], they sent somebody over because he wasn't totally within the fold." 👀

One of the two DOGE staffers whose access to Treasury payment systems was approved by a judge has resigned. 25-year-old Marko Elez resigned today after WSJ asked the White House about his connection to a deleted social-media account that promoted racism and eugenics. www.wsj.com/tech/doge-st...

Republicans ran into the room to SHEILD Elon Musk from having to come and speak to Congress. They want their billionaire takeover done behind closed doors. The people deserve transparency. No one elected Elon Musk.

There is absolutely nothing to consider. Do it now. Pull every lever, delay everything, cooperate in no way with anything that they want to do, however basic. This has to stop.

i don’t even know if crime is the right word for the illegal destruction of USAID. it is an autocratic power grab and a direct attack on the sovereignty of the american people

What’s happening in the US is starting to feel more like a hacking than an election, with Trump basically cast as the idiot who clicked on the phishing email that let the ransomware guys in. Struck by how crucial tech not politics reporters are to us understanding it
