The Great EV Road Trip Experiment Encounters Central Texas Headwinds

Our Secretary of Defense almost certainly has more threatening/extremist tattoos and has more credibly been accused of sexual assault than almost all of the people being sent to El Salvador. No exaggeration.

Who goes Nazi:

When I wrote my camps book, people sometimes had difficulty understanding how concentration-camp regimes were proud of what they were doing and wanted attention for it, even as they also hoped to keep many aspects secret and terrorize vulnerable classes. Anyway, this is what that looks like.

My youngest daughter's Social Security card has the wrong birth date on it. I need an appointment to correct it, which can only be made via their national line. I recorded the experience, and have no path to resolution. Highlights in thread.

It also more clearly establishes that what’s going on here is human trafficking.

It’s been legitimately shocking to watch the descent of the Republican electorate through the funhouse mirror of cowardly politicians like Rubio who try to reflect popular opinion.

Again, this isn’t “DEI.” It’s just segregation. The sooner we normalize this language and this understanding, the sooner the country can understand what it’s facing.

It's baffling to me that this is being either ignored or presented as some goofy talk by Trump, instead of understanding that he is talking about *conquering a sovereign nation and taking ownership of it*. This is no different than Russia and Ukraine, except the U.S. military hasn't invaded (yet?).

Fine, you win pundits, I'll go figure out what "sclerotic" means.

Heck, not just politics. I can think of examples in my professional (software development) and volunteer (refugee resettlement) efforts where I’ve unintentionally adopted one of these reactionary positions. Great lens for introspection! Adding this to my conversational preflight checklist.

In retrospect we should have reacted much more strongly to people being like “you’re just virtue signaling, you’re just saying you have virtue, you’re just treating virtue like it’s a good thing for an adult human being to have, you just want to run around everywhere having morality and being good”

South African car salesman tells U.S. Senator, American astronaut and U.S. Navy captain: "You are a traitor"

Yeah, this is a perennial truth -- landmark struggles over free speech typically involve people who are saying and doing things that are *unpopular* That's, uh, why they need the protection of the First Amendment. It's sort of the whole point.

What Trump & Musk both believe and their actions betray is that black people are inferior to white people and none of them are qualified to hold any job they consider prestigious or important. That’s it. There’s no need to decode DEI any further.

And I suggest that the United States should seize and nationalize Tesla, SpaceX, and Starlink. We can both make suggestions!

Ah, yes: giving a handful of friendly senators a phone number they can call to talk to the shadow president to reverse distasteful funding cuts. This is what the Founders intended.

Some democratic voters tend to forget that, sometimes, protest and solidarity is about dignity, not just about what kind of law can get passed. No one throws a rock at a tank b/c they know they can win. They do it to be able to demonstrate they care about folks' humanity above all else

It was for transgenic mice, used for research because you can get a certain human gene in them. There are no transgender mice.

"medical freedom" = criminalizing vaccines, in the same way that "free speech" = banning words and books

one thing that's absolutely buckwild is that trump decided to take this insanely belligerent stance with respect to canada without even making a cursory attempt to whip up anti-canadian sentiment. not even the "supporters" of this policy can name what the cause of it is supposed to be.

he looks like every character from Roseanne all at the same time

"democrats plan to color coordinate to communicate opposition" is the biggest loser shit i've ever heard. School Spirit Week-ass action. "I do not give facebook my permission"-ass action. are they hitting themselves in the head with hammers at every DNC event

Ontario Premier Doug Ford cancels Elon Musk’s Starlink contract and bans all US companies from government contracts: “It’s done, it’s gone... We won’t award contracts to people who enable and encourage economic attacks on our province and our country.” “They only have President Trump to blame.”

It's going to be a leaseback scam.

They're waging a war against decency.

What’s the most bugfuck insane thing you can say on air and still get a CNN anchor to respond “right” at the end of it?

Easy to lose this in the noise of the day, but the prime minister of Canada just said the US president, leader of the global hegemon, wants to soften us up economically so he can annex us. That is one of the most remarkable statements, and realities, in our history.

British troops have fought and died alongside the Americans in Afghanistan and Iraq, just to be written off as non-existent people from "some random country". We have to maintain tolerable relations with this administration to try and minimise damage, but my god it's not easy.

Eric Trump plainly admits that his father’s Sunday social media post about the “crypto strategic reserve” was intended to manipulate the crypto markets

The three types of Nextdoor post are anyone recognize person ? why a hat in this weather ? do NOT open communiqués from Yahoo it’s called FISHING pile of dirt across the street preparing for what? building mcdonalds from the dirt? i will leave

Pretty proud that I’ve had Matt Taibbi’s number since way back when he was writing things I should have agreed with. He’s the guy on the mission you peg from the start as destined to get you all killed, or worse.

Johnson may or may not understand the tech. In either case, this is a clear example of how AI will be used in this administration: either by duping politicians about what AI can do, or giving them a cover story to pretend AI can do the things they want to get done.

old Soviet joke for our times: Guy stops by the newsstand every day, scans the front page, doesn’t buy the paper. One day the vendor asks what he’s up to. Guy says: “looking for an obituary.” Vendor says “those are towards the back of the paper, comrade.” Guy says: “not the one I’m looking for.”

This is the second time USAID/State is punishing people revealing the truth that Marco is killing children. They're quite desperate to hide this fact, as if the reporters in Africa or court declarations are making it up.

“If Roosevelt had told Churchill to sue for peace on any terms with Adolf Hitler and to fork over Britain’s coal reserves to the United States in exchange for no American security guarantees, it might have approximated what Trump did to Zelensky.” www.nytimes.com/2025/02/28/o...

An absolute shame. 18F does foundational, scalable, useful work that millions of US citizens ended up using every day. I’m sorry for the employees caught up in this.

It’s time to say it plainly. America’s leadership has switched sides in the war. The American people have not, and they should speak up.

yeah I dislike the doom and gloom from a normative perspective on like the "nature of America" and I also think it's premature, but with regards to foreign policy this is just straight up true, sorry! I wouldn't enter into a decades long agreement with America right now either!
