Resegregation

Suggested changes: The far-right AfD, backed by JD Vance and Elon Musk, was rejected by 80 percent of voters, exit polls suggest. Mainstream parties plan to form a coalition without them because voters don't want them to govern.

1/ I am seeing a lot of comments on the slashing of NIH support along the lines of “universities should just spend their huge endowments.” I’m the last person to cheer on the institutional stratification rising endowments have contributed to. But let me explain why this is not a solution.

If you called in to Target: you helped send this message. Thank you. (And if you called Costco to thank them for keeping DEIA, same!) Don't think that your voice doesn't matter. It does.

He nails it.

I have been so excited since I found out this would be announced today! RIP any ability for me to concentrate: www.apple.com/tv-pr/news/2...

People in tech talk about the idea of a “10x programmer” — someone whose work is worth that of 10 others. I get the impression Musk etc think they can apply it all over the federal workforce but like… there’s no such thing as a 10x ATC navigational aid maintenance worker. Some jobs just need people.

I've used the "building a plane during takeoff" metaphor a few times in my time on the planet. Now it's apparently time to try out "dismantling the plane during flight".

I just found out that my first book 📗, LAB GIRL 🌱🌿🌳, was challenged by a parent and subsequently removed from the shelves of the library at Walworth High School in Elkhorn, Wisconsin. So I decided to write a 🧵 on book 📚 #censorship 🚫 in American 🇺🇸 schools 🚸 1/n

1. Did you know that Girl Scouts has, for a long time, accepted trans girls and nonbinary scouts? Trans kids are under attack. Every year, I make a thread of trans and nonbinary girl scouts you can get your cookies from. Lets get our cookies from them this year in solidarity!

Since I post a lot about problems with LLMs, here's an example of something they're pretty darn good at. For a collaborative project, I wanted to make the following figure using TikZ, a language for creating vector graphics within LaTeX documents. I've never used TikZ before.

You cannot determine whether you saved or cost money based solely on one side of the ledger. Example: I saved my household $2K by not paying the mortgage.

“The Maryland National Guard must decline events which celebrates individuals based all or in part on immutable characteristics,” the memo said. Douglass was an abolitionist, suffragist, orator and author. That’s what we celebrate him. Let’s be clear: This bars celebrating him because he was Black.

“Trump’s bad ideas must be countered with good ones. His attack on the government has to be contrasted with a vision of how the system could work and should work — for the people, not the emperor-in-the-making.” — M. Gessen www.nytimes.com/2025/02/15/o...

Someone sent this to me. I appreciate the way this person lays out information: www.youtube.com/watch?v=swxX...

I actually love this because it so succinctly captures the entire MO of this administration and this party — “some people said things that made me feel bad about my beliefs and my actions and my place in this world, so now I’m entitled to cause mass destruction and material suffering”

This is a comprehensive (and very bleak) summary of the current state of US science

I am pleased to report that, in a lunch gathering focused on AI in the classroom, the students expressed an even higher degree of skepticism about the value of AI in education than the faculty. The kids are alright.

New drop from @climatetown.bsky.social featuring "Billy Bob" and the wonderful work of @amywestervelt.bsky.social Drilled podcast! youtu.be/wBC_bug5DIQ Hit 'em up, yo!

Trump’s executive orders are not law. This doctor knows it. Many hospital systems know it. Those that comply with something not passed by congress and with power not constitutionally granted to the president are cowardly.

“Alan Charles Raul served as associate White House counsel under President Ronald Reagan and as general counsel of the Office of Management and Budget under Reagan and President George H.W. Bush.” www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/202...

happy International Day of [banned] and [banned] in Science [under review] from the US

so i don’t know if susan collins knows this but she belongs to a body that has the constitutionally designated power to tell HHS to stop making these cuts because they do not have the authority to unilaterally refuse to spend congressional appropriations.

I don’t have a fancy lesson I delivered about the #SuperBowlHalftimeShow Before I showed it, I instructed my students to write down three words and document when they noticed them: •imagery •symbolism •message We watched once all the way through, then we broke down where my students noted. +

funniest highlights of the philly police scanner, a thread

“I mean, what we’re seeing is what you’d expect if China and Russia had somehow managed to install people who wanted to sabotage America’s international position at the highest levels of the U.S. government.” Yup. And that’s Paul Krugman saying it, not just an excitable gadfly like myself.

Enjoyed this analogy from @jakepost.tech: "The technical challenge is akin to firing a laser from New York to LA (if the Earth was flat), and trying to hit a fruit fly’s eyeball with it. And both the laser and the fruit fly are moving as that operation unfolds." Bring on space-based GW hunting!

“There are moments in the world’s history when people look back and ask, ‘Where were the lawyers, where were the judges?’ In these moments, the rule of law becomes especially vulnerable. I refuse to let that beacon go dark today,” the judge said.

This article lays it out plainly. There's nothing to repeal. Costco doesn't have a DEI program. It doesn't have a diversity policy. It simply doesn't use discriminatory hiring practices. These AGs are in hysterics bcuz Costco refuses to segregate its business.

Costco, which has come out saying it supports DEI, will make no changes to its existing programs, AND pays workers a minimum of $30/hour, is up 15% YTD. Target, which announced it is ending all DEI programs and has a minimum wage of $15-$24/hour, is down over 4%. Keep voting with your wallet.

God will not forgive us.

A statement from the Kennedy Center

This is why they're attacking science and education: if you can only win with disinformation, data become a threat.

OK, I knew this American crash out would drop us to 2nd place and hand China the crown. 🤔But I didn't know that we were going for Japan too? We're really trying to be 3rd? It bunches up after 4, so we have an opportunity to pull a Lewis Hamilton Formula one move and pass 4 or 5 nations at once.

If your boss or company tells you to do something unethical: don't say yes. Make them write it down.

Around 35% of SpaceX’s revenue comes directly from the federal govt. Less than 1% of NPR’s budget comes from the federal govt.

I asked ChatGPT if the Trump plan to take over Gaza is a good idea because I wondered what kind of answer someone would get if they asked this question. It gave me this list of "pros" and "cons" /1

Wow. So if I can't use it to *get* the job, I'm guessing you don't want me using it to *do* the job? www.404media.co/anthropic-cl...

I do not recall a 24 hour or one week news cycle with more disturbing news about the state of the presidency and the US government in it than those of today and the past seven days. January 6 was nothing compared to this. But make no mistake, this too is the gov't being torn apart by a mob of thugs.

The New Republic has kindly published what the LA Times and its RFK Jr-supporting billionaire owner Pat Soon-Shiong tried to suppress: newrepublic.com/article/1910...

They are expanding their McCarthyite war on diversity to include people with disabilities, and doing it very clearly. Should someone in a wheelchair be able to work for the FAA? I think an overwhelming majority of Americans would say "of course" but that's not what we're hearing from Trump.

I mean, literally, the answer to this is "I am federally prohibited from telling you anything about my students without a subpoena or judicial warrant; if you have a subpoena or judicial warrant, please submit it to [Legal Officer/Office] to ensure it is in compliance with all relevant federal laws"

Really appreciate Jonathan Lambert pointing out that NSF grants are congressionally mandated to weigh how grants broaden participation in science, putting the administration's executive order against DEIA in conflict with, and potentially undermining, congressional legislation
