Republicans at a GOP town hall in Spokane, Washington, raised the Canadian flag and called on Trump to be impeached. #3E

New, from @pamherd.bsky.social at Can We Still Govern: NIH grants are being screened for forbidden words. Breakthrough techniques (like mRNA) are now off the table. Do you want scientific funding awards to be determined by political appointees or scientists? donmoynihan.substack.com/p/politicizi...

I’m so tired of hearing Rubio & other rightwingers now claiming that if you’re on a green card you’re a ‘guest’ in this country. BS. You’re a lawful permanent resident. The clue is in the name. If someone is a permanent resident in your home, are they the same as the guests who come and go? Come on.

Auchincloss on Fox News Sunday: "This economy is inflationary right now...you know what the GOP response is? Their response is, 'Well, get ready for a rocky ride & by the way, we're gonna give tax cuts to the top 20% of earners & pay for it by taking away healthcare from people who need healthcare'"

This is horrible to post, but I may as well post it. We are essentially shutting down research operations in my group, which is focused on treatments for pediatric brain cancer. I’m a well funded investigator, and there’s no choice. Science can’t function without the stability of NIH

“Schmidt being “violently interrogated” at Logan Airport for hours, and being stripped naked, put in a cold shower by two officials, and being put back onto a chair.” Whatever happened to #abolishICE? It needs to be abolished. This is torture.

Of course, having to stay in DC past today would have interfered with Schumer’s book tour which begins Monday.

Science, folks. Science. This is wonderful news.

The fight going on in the Democratic Party right now is not between hard left, left and moderate. It’s between those who want to fight and those who want to cave. And Team Fight stretches across all ideological aspects of the Party. Misread this at your own peril.

I cannot emphasize this enough: no one will remember the shutdown even happened when it’s time to vote next year. One way or the other!

This letter appeared in the Bloomsburg PA Press Enterprise this morning. I am assured the writer is who he purports to be, an Air Force veteran.

Everyone should be screaming like this! More of this, now please!

Maybe dem reps could hold their own state of the union on the Capitol steps. Steal the spotlight. Let members like AOC, Jasmine Crockett, Max Frost, and the DNC make remarks. Norms don't exist. Buck them.

I went to the tesla protest for a thing I'm working on and I talked to several onlookers - not protesters - and asked them what they knew about Elon and Doge and I'm telling you people don't know

NEW: The axing of some 10,000 programs has consigned untold numbers of children and refugees to death, officials say. Documents and interviews reveal that the State Department appears to have made the cuts without the careful review it described in court. By Brett Murphy and @annamaria.bsky.social

NOAA returns/produces so much more money to the American economy than it costs, no stories about any of this should allow them the absolutely bullshit "savings" framing

If DOGE is a federal agency, it can’t shield its records from the public. If it’s not an agency, then its tens of millions of dollars in funding weren’t legally allocated and should be returned, some contend.

I believe Musk and DOGE disbanded 18F because we stood in the way of their "procurement capture" operation. We get the government *out* of wasteful contracts. Musk wants that money back for himself. Explanation by @anildash.com of procurement capture: www.anildash.com/2025/01/04/D...

Corrupt? Sure. But also directly dangerous? And how! FAA has done careful, long testing /study of new tower-communication system. Now a rush to switch to system that *just happens* to be owned by Mr. Efficiency himself, Elon. (Has he even been to an ATC facility? Probably like Vance re Ukraine)

Approaching majority opposition to basic 20th century second wave feminism among Republican men

The leading cause of death for pregnant women in the US is homicide. (This jaw-dropping fact is frequently cited by @lyz.bsky.social, from whence I got it.)

Hi, broken record here. The same degraded information environment that led to Trump being elected is still in place. Most people still aren't being told what's happening, who's at fault, or what the effects will be. And there's zero reason to think traumatic events will "wake people up."

Remember: The fundamental issue isn’t the size of the government or how to make government more “efficient.”  It’s who our government is for. Should it work mainly for big corporations and billionaires, including the richest person in the world — or for the rest of us?

The top 0.1% of Americans control $22 trillion in wealth. The bottom 50% control $3.8 trillion in wealth. Read that back. Folks, this is what oligarchy looks like.

Republicans have been out to gut Social Security for years because it’s one of the most popular and successful programs ever created. Those who claim to care about the debt while pushing for trillions in tax cuts for the rich and corporations don't really care about the debt. Hello?

Hundreds of NOAA employees are being fired by Trump and DOGE. The National Weather Service, which is part of NOAA, provides life saving weather forecasting in the US. A study found that for every $1 invested in NWS, it produces $73 in value to Americans. Again, this isn't about efficiency.

The GOP's tax cuts for their billionaire donors ballooned the deficit, so they're blaming the problem on Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid — demanding cuts to programs that millions of Americans rely on. It's socialism for the rich, harsh capitalism for everyone else.

This is what ardent NYT _conservative_ Bret Stephens is saying. Anyone with any sense knows that today was an absolute disaster and disgrace for the United States.

The top 10% of earners now account for 50% of spending in the US, up from 40% in 1990. That means affordability problems will be slower to show up in spending numbers. It’s also, of course, evidence that American prosperity is increasingly unequally shared.

Maryland & Hawaii stand to suffer the largest drops in employment from mass federal layoffs. But high on the list are also red states like Alaska & West Virginia. Mass layoffs won’t just interrupt crucial government services; they’ll increase unemployment & slow local economies across the country.

Republicans could nearly halve the cost of their tax cuts if they just dropped cuts for the top 5%. Cc: @centeronbudget.bsky.social

In order to actually cut $1 trillion from the budget you are going to need massive cuts to programs like Social Security. Musk is not hiding his intentions

I don’t even know how this could be presented as being in service of anything other than hindering scientific progress.

First, they said postponed; now the meeting is canceled. That means no flu shots next year. “'It’s a six-month production cycle,' Dr. Offit said. 'So one can only assume that we’re not picking flu strains this year.'" Fundamentally, that's a form of mass murder. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/26/u...
