I fear we have killed our Exorbitant Privilege without really realizing what we are doing

the tesla protest might objectively be among the most successful in history already just in terms of immediate response, if you consider they forced the world’s most powerful person & its most wealthy to fully degrade themselves like used car salesmen on live TV while the whole world watched agog.

It feels very clear from the various reports that Senate Democrats see the political challenge posed by the CR as the fact that they've been given actual leverage and are expected by their base to do something with it. That's why they're doing this cloture-in-exchange-for-amendments deal

one thing i keep thinking about is how there is simply no way to design a constitutional system that can resist authoritarian incursion if participants in that system do not actually care that much

Got a person I know who works for the federal govt who may get Musk’d. Literally the sort of person we all want doing federal work, one of the smartest people I’ve ever known. Makes me incandescent with rage. Not only at GOP, but decorum obsessed Dems. Our country is dying.

MAKE WARREN MAJORITY LEADER I SWEAR TO GOD

next Canadian government should think of boosting research funding up here and trying to grab as many American postdocs and researchers as possible

This is an incredibly important post that you should read right now

Twitter is down. Tesla stock is plummeting. SpaceX’s rocket imploded. All owned by the same guy who’s now in charge of our federal government.

FREE MAHMOUD KHALIL. Just to recap: Mahmoud Khalil exercises his First Amendment rights. But, Donald Trump and Marco Rubio didn’t agree with what he said. A THREAD.

Scoop: Washington Post editor Ruth Marcus says she’s resigning after a column on Jeff Bezos’s Wall Street Journal-like opinion pivot was rejected by Will Lewis

Yes. And moreover, Democratic leaders failed to talk about the dictatorship stuff after the election, and that was a MAJOR CAUSE of voters not believing it! What Dems say matters. And what they're saying now is... lame and pathetic and not nearly getting the job done.

A “we hate him too” sign was recently spotted at the San Francisco Tesla dealership which was likely placed by an employee. Love it.

"In a town with just over 1,000 residents, hundreds of people packed Belmont's Community Building Saturday for a town hall hosted by Democratic Rep. Mark Pocan. The building was filled to capacity with people even waiting outside and peeking through the windows..." www.wkow.com/news/politic...

I put a stock ticker widget on my phone just for this. It’s important to find joy in the little things

I think that the Washington Post should not be in the hands of Jeff Bezos, the Los Angeles Times should not be in the hands of Patrick Soon-Shiong, Meta, X, and TikTok should not be under the control of their various owners, and the NY Times should not be under the control of the Ochs family.

Yes. If DHS can barge in, say your visa was revoked, be told you have a green card, say it's revoked too, and then disappear you so that neither your lawyer nor your family can find you, then all the guardrails are gone. There is no policy, practice, or law protecting anyone.

Mahmood Khalil is the first person to have been disappeared by this administration. He will not be the last.

It served your father well in the Posting Wars

illegally detaining someone and attempting to pull his green card for political reasons is another reason congressional democrats can’t give up a single vote for the republican budget, even for a CR. the lawlessness must stop, first, and republicans have to help stop it.

A craven and cynical government is pushing universities into censorship, though to be fair some of them didn’t need much of a push.

The Vichy Times is, at the editorial and managerial levels, fundamentally opposed to the movements for social justice which originated during Barack Obama’s administration and, lest we forget, called out the Times’ coverage of Michael Brown’s murder in particular as problematic.

This fucking monster has spent $60 million of New York taxpayer money trying to bury me and the other woman he harassed alongside the nursing home victims his policies killed. This man can go to hell. He is headed there sooner or later anyway.

Here’s my deal: didn’t Trump already take money from Columbia? Are they scared he’s going to take more? Do they actually feel that they will have to shut down if they lose four years of federal funding? Is that feeling true?

this is part of why that sicko south african freak has been spiraling about the protests for the last 72 hours

They're actively recruiting sexual harassers and abusers. They view this as a positive.

It should terrify everyone that a green card holder was black bagged and disappeared to Louisiana simply for having opinions this administration dislikes. They're building the prisons and camps to do it to citizens. The time to stand up to this is now.

disappearing a guy for being a “sympathizer” of any variety is uncomplicated dictatorship

elon musk is probably the current largest threat to the climate, as he dismantles every climate program and defunds all climate science research supporting his downfall, even if it takes tesla with him, is a great pro-climate action. people can buy other evs that don’t enrich tyrannical nazis

It doesn’t matter if you thought all the Columbia students last summer were obnoxious. Snatching people up illegally and transporting them across the country for clearly illegitimate reasons is a red line.

Wait the crazy religion they made up for Conclave is actually real???

re the previous repost: if they can disappear permanent residents they can disappear citizens

criticizing liberalism is useful and necessary for liberalism to improve and for other movements not to repeat its mistakes -- but most of the people using "liberal" as an epithet just straight up don't know what they're talking about

ICE’s arrest of Mahmoud Khalil is an unconstitutional and egregious violation of the First Amendment, and a frightening weaponization of immigration law. (1/4)

He was supposedly arrested for acitivities “aligned” to Hamas. Anyone who cares even a little about civil liberties should understand what an absurd and dangerous legal standard this is. Legal equivalent of a vibe check. His wife was threatened, too — an 8 mo pregnant U.S. citizen (Screenshot: AP)

Not even really pretending there’s a legitimate pretense for kidnapping a green card holder

no, what's patronizing and insulting is acting like you're going to somehow convert a bunch of votes by shouting about an egg shortage, because you think people are too stupid to understand things like "you can't arrest your political opponents" or "causing economic collapse is bad"

the fact that people are being disappeared in the name of ""preventing antisemitism"" by a christian nationalist administration is making me nauseated and horrified in ways i cant even begin to explain

The way you actually change public opinion is by getting enough people and sources to repeat an idea that it starts to "seem" correct, even like the consensus, to many listeners, at which point they'll often adopt it.

And people who pay no attention at all to politics can still tell when someone is being a phony. The biggest problem with Democratic messaging is they sound inauthentic. Voters know Trump is an asshole but like Bush in 2004 they prefer an asshole over an inauthentic phony.

Fwiw one thing university faculty can do is provide simple explainers for their students on how federal funding works and how cuts to higher ed & endowment taxes will concretely damage their education and possibly spike tuition costs Many students don’t know how university finances work!

This is fascism.

BRB, checking the history books to find out whether “tyrant starts redefining peoples’ citizenship status” usually ends well for the Jews

Tuberculosis, the deadliest infectious disease on the planet, kills more than 1.25M people a year. New infections are expected to surge by 30% as a result of closing USAID, a memo says. The increase will inevitably lead to cases in the U.S.

Last night I was helping a @teslatakedown.com host troubleshoot a tech issue. She's in a very red area where white nationalist militias regularly intimidate journalists and elected officials. I thanked her for her courage, and this was her response. #teslatakedown
