In 1890, the Tariff Act came into place in the United States. It placed tariffs on imports of up to 50%. While touted as a way to build American industry, there was also the hope it would force an annexation of Canada. It backfired. Let's learn more. 🧵1/10

would really like it if media stopped referring to backlash as being “about tariffs” when it’s about “the president constantly saying canada shouldn’t exist” like people were not going apeshit on our nation’s greatest hockey player because of his thoughts on economic trade policy

This is very obviously going to be a protection racket, where Trump can at the stroke of a pen destroy or save your business depending on how compliant you are.

Exempting USMCA-compliant auto imports from tariffs would lessen the impact of Trump's trade war, sparing ~$122B in imports (~$170B if parts are exempted) But it just highlights the ridiculousness of this whole endeavor—why exempt cars but not oil, tomatoes, computers, etc etc?

One thing I'm fucken sick of hearing is that people on the poverty line "don't want handouts." Well, the rich take hand outs. Maybe they're rich bc they were offered handouts. Maybe they're rich bc they take them. This "shame in receiving free money" for the poor but not the rich makes me SO MAD

On this day in 1990, Danger Bay aired its final episode. For six seasons and 123 episodes, the show brought Vancouver to the world and it became a beloved program for many Canadians. Let's learn more about it! 🧵1/7

SESAME STREET WORKERS ARE UNIONIZING!!! ✊ This morning, workers at the nonprofit behind Sesame Street delivered their letter asking for voluntary recognition to management! Read all about it: www.opeiulocal153.org/news/employe...

everything is so shitty, read this story about a genuinely good man who saw he had an opportunity to save millions of lives and threw himself into doing so. the world is full of heroes like him.

Former 🇺🇸 ambassador to Russia 👇🏽

Sometimes it's not a bad idea to watch NINJA SCROLL (1993).

wanted to share one of my all-time favorite photographs of George Miller here on the cover of Geo magazine '82

Listening to Doug Ford suggesting he would cut the power and energy off to the United States when he won't even cancel a starlink contract is hilarious.

Alberta proves private healthcare is more efficient at generating scandals

Ontario needs to cancel Starlink. Ford won't, though.

Just as in the US, conservative media is whipping up a ‘crisis of men’ as an excuse to blame the left for the entirely foreseeable consequences of right-wing policy. You think Tories are gonna do shit about underfunded education and falling wages?

You can tell antivaxxers don’t actually care about children because a child died and these sickos are using it as an excuse to share juice recipes and promote their supplements. There’s more aluminum in a cup of carrot juice than in the two-dose MMR series. And carrot juice doesn’t prevent measles.

It's so funny watching people complain about a single use of the word 'fuck' on WWE "because there are kids watching" when an hour earlier they watched a man get beaten with a chair wrapped in barbed wire without batting an eye.

So Musk’s people, who misread $8 million as $8 billion, who counted the same contracts multiple times and counted as savings programs that ended last year, claim that their AI is finding lots of Social Security fraud. Why should anyone worry?

During a time when Canadians are buying Canadian, and right after winning election campaigning on the promise to be Ontario’s voice against Donald Trump - explain to me why it was a smart decision to vacation in Florida? What message does that send to Ontarians?

I can't really convey how it feels to be stabbed in the back by the US and the UK after Canada has *always* stepped up for them whenever they've needed us, up to and and including fighting and dying at their side. Betrayal doesn't begin to describe it.

Mike Myers, Canadian legend, on SNL tonight.

I’ve read 100s of English lang novels published 1920-50. None of them engage in w. Spanish flu pandemic in any notable way, though most refer to WWI, the Dust Bowl, the rise of fascism, ect. & I didn’t notice this until lockdown! I think something about pandemics makes us want to look away.

What a trip. 20 years later Kanye is selling t-shirts with swastikas on them and Mike Myers is the one calling out an American president on live television.

‘Move fast and break things’ only works for people who have never had to clean up after themselves.

On this day in 1996, Rowan Atkinson showed up in character as Mr. Bean at the Toronto Eaton Centre. What followed was a mob scene of 3,000 fans and what Atkinson called the scariest moment of his life. Let's learn more about it! 🧵1/9

Internet chemistry classic: Billy was a chemist's son But Billy is no more For what he thought was H2O Was H2SO4.

Seems like a pretty important detail

18F, the federal government’s technology shop, was demolished by Musk’s team shortly after midnight. It was a cost-recoverable org, charging agencies for their expertise, using a consulting model. Its cost to government was negligible, its benefits huge. My team there once saved DoD $500 billion.

Zelenskyy: "It's not just that the war began somewhere between our countries. The war began when Russia brought this war to our country. They're not right. They didn't respect our territorial integrity. They brought the war to our families. Ukrainians want to hear a position of the US on our side"

I grew up with the stories of my grandparents who lived under the Nazi regime. For me, Star Wars wasn't just about space battles, lightsabers and wizards. Rejection of fascism & authoritarianism has always been an important part of it. That's why Andor resonates so much with me: it's my Star Wars.

Canada needs to have a hard convo about national service. Meanwhile we can’t even get mobsters out of our government, apparently

In this new piece we show that as the imperial core imposed structural adjustment programs on Africa, Africans were forced to consume less while their surplus resources were transferred instead out to the capitalist world economy effectively *for free*. roape.net/2025/02/28/p...

Elon Musk looks invincible, but a lot of his power and wealth is tied up in Tesla. This week @niedermeyer.online joins @parismarx.com to explain why Tesla is more vulnerable than it might appear and how hurting it can cause problems for Musk. Full ep: techwontsave.us/episode/265_...

There is a belief in MAGAland that the private sector will just fund this stuff. For example, Sean Hannity said that “most of the solutions for cancer are going to be found in the private sector, not with public money.” But thats simply not true.

By @katherinejwu.com "The NIH... supported 99 percent of the drugs approved in the U.S. from 2010 to 2019. The agency has had a hand in “nearly all of our major medical breakthroughs over the past several decades,” The NIH is in a struggle for its (and our) lives. This is existential to America:

Fox News just said the U.S. doesn't have anything like China's Belt and Road Initiative, which is hilarious. We did. It was called USAID.

The great Gene Hackman has died, aged 95. One of my favorite actors. I'm truly moved. We all know his filmography, but let's not forget his forays into sci-fi, including The Invaders (1967), Marooned (1969), Young Frankenstein (1974), and of course Superman (1978). He will be sorely missed.
