Agriculture, which feeds 8 billion people around the world, is one of the most vulnerable sectors to climate change

And the bit on UK media was *very* interesting. Nobody saying that media should only ask questions that politicians want asked - but equally UK media (across the spectrum) sees it as their job to rile politicians and create friction. These are serious times, and we might need a more serious media.

CCC's 7th carbon budget advice on agriculture & land use: - Overall, land use changes required over 19% of UK farmland (previously expressed as 'one-fifth' of ag land) - Meeting 7CB means a 27% reduction in cattle and sheep numbers between 2023 and 2040 1/ - www.theccc.org.uk/wp-content/u...

Pause for thought. Yesterday the US voted in the UN Security Council with Russia and China to avoid sanctioning Russia over Ukraine. Who would have thought …. Now ponder how secure is UK science …

CCC's 7th carbon budget shows how the UK can be just as self sufficient on food, & improve farm profitability, public health, reduce emissions AND cut land use overseas by –*does quick sums*– at least 3.7m hectares, an area equal to size of Wales & NI - important for global conservation efforts 🧵

NEW: Official advisers CCC say UK shld cut emissions 87% by 2040 ⚖️Net cost of net-zero 73% less than thought 💷Total cost to 2050 = £108bn (~£4bn/yr, 0.2% GDP) 🏡🚗H’hold energy/fuel bills to fall £1,400 🔌Electrification is key THREAD + charts www.carbonbrief.org/... 1/10

Less meat (more beans) needed for net zero - great! Should be achieved by cutting industrial and ultra-processed meat products from diets. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

Unfortunately, I was one of the thousands of new USDA scientists let go yesterday. It was an absolute honor to work there. If anyone in the southeastern Michigan area knows of a role that might match my background, I would really appreciate it. Thank you for your support!

It's been a long time since Private Eye's satire has made me audibly wince, but this is so to the point if it were a knife people would demand it be banned.

In our latest blog, FFCC's Head of Food Futures Mhairi Brown discusses the government’s response to the @houseoflords.parliament.uk Food, Diet and Obesity Committee’s Recipe for Health report, which included an “unprecedented analysis of food industry lobbing."

I was just told that I have to remove “climate” from the title of an ongoing grant if I want to keep it. And publications from that grant cannot include “climate” and other forbidden words. I can’t believe I’m writing this from the United States of America. #AcademicSky

These losses put the sector and country at risk. I work in health, how can the UK increase the NHS workforce as planned without the staff to teach them? Where is the joined up thinking here?

This week I have been accompanying colleagues who are at risk of redundancy in their individual consultation meetings. Grim. There are around 90 UK universities that are shedding staff at the moment.

Been reading through the Government's new Land Use Consultation. Here's the juiciest bits I've seen so far! An excellent, bold proposal to spare 9% of England's least-productive land for nature & carbon - restoring peat bogs & regenerating woods - & changes to ag land use over a further 10% /1
