The European federation of Academies of Sciences has posted a statement of concern about the developments in the US. They now have added the option to endorse this statement as an organisation. Would be great if this could go viral. allea.org/portfolio-it...

Guardian story about Federal Register issue is up. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

We are crowd sourcing reductions in graduate admissions and hiring freezes across biomedical research and higher ed in response to pauses in NIH funding and EO’s. If you have information if you could add to this spreadsheet, it would be greatly appreciated!: docs.google.com/spreadsheets...

My high schooler and I held our annual fun workshop for a STEM program that engages (trigger warning 😀) underrepresented, first-gen students from inner STL city middle schools! Just keep doing what you do as long as you can.

At UMass Chan, industry IDCs are (publicly) set at 79%. That's because it *still* makes academic research a steal for pharma. Academic research is cheap. We are paid less and have fewer resources. We typically work longer hours. We are a *steal* if you want R&D efficiency

#Missouri we've got the party set up for Jeff City March 7. standupforscience2025.org/jefferson-ci...

A slide I've been working on to illustrate the combined impact of the current multipronged attacks on biomedical research funding. Besides more curse words, what am I missing?

The Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights has threatened to annihilate 60 years of advancements in equal opportunity by eliminating all federal funding for schools that support and celebrate students from diverse backgrounds. 🧵 1/

The Buffalo RNA Group is having a one day symposium on June 11, 8 am to 5 pm. More info to come when registration opens!

To my colleagues, friends, and everybody else in the federal workforce, including from the NIH and the CDC, you are all heroes and deserve so much better than the obtuse insanity you’re all living through at the moment. Rest assured that we are with you in this fight and unafraid 💪!

Very important to get this word out!

Resilience: " the capacity to withstand or to recover quickly from difficulties; toughness." As scientists, we constantly face failures with funding, publications, science, experiments, etc. And to top that, personal trials &times like these challenge our resilience& yet-we persevere. Hang in there💙

A large portion of grants awarded by the U.S. National Institutes of Health cannot be funded for the foreseeable future because of an indefinite hold on submissions to the Federal Register, according to an email reviewed by The Transmitter. By @avaskham.bsky.social bit.ly/3X8ngz8

Since federal health information is getting harder to come by, I thought I'd share this new resource. Cornell's College of Veterinary Medicine launched an online Avian Flu Resource Center--a one-stop clearinghouse for trustworthy information on bird flu. www.vet.cornell.edu/highly-patho...

NIH study sections that have not been announced in the Federal Register (www.federalregister.gov) will unlikely to happen as scheduled 😢. #AcademicSky 🧪

So a former postdoc from our department had just started as a PO at NIH and was terminated in the wave of terminations last week. He is in the research triangle and a phenomenal scientist with expertise in stress and glia. If anyone in the RTI is hiring asap please let me know! #neuroskyence

Talk to your neighbors. Talk to your family. Talk to your friends. Tell everyone what is happening and why science matters (this is not a USA-only post, because we know this is happening everywhere)

We have an open position for a research technician position in my lab at Cleveland Clinic. We study oncogenic signaling in leukemia and lymphoma. DM for details.

ATTENTION (PLEASE SHARE) If anyone has or knows of any positions that might be appropriate for the NIH staff members who were terminated, please post the information in this thread. There are lots of talented and accomplished people who may be looking for new opportunities.

Here is the deal: In America we have about 1.7 years until the midterms where we can vote the GOP out of office in the House and the Senate and retake some semblance of control and normalcy in our country. Start organizing, and for goodness sake, learn how to fight.

Watch the replay - terrific and well attended talks from Kara Bernstein (RAD51 paralogs) and Joanna Loizou (pol theta) yesterday at the NAR Cancer 5th anniversary symposium. Link to "watch the latest replay" at www.cancer.columbia.edu/research/pro...

(Sorry I took a brief timeout for uncontrollable weeping) In other NIH news, I have heard from multiple sources that NIH plans to fire most, if not all, probationary employees this afternoon. The numbers I am hearing are >5000. Lots of folks extramural staff, intramural scientists, etc.

Just saw that Mike Lauer is stepping down as director of extramural research. A steadfast supporter of the NIH scientific mission. Call your representatives. www.statnews.com/2025/02/13/n...

Science/academia are under siege. Slashed funding from NIH, NSF, and NASA, etc.—plus loss of Pell Grants—will cripple universities. Next, massive endowment taxes aim to deliver the final blow. Research and education are on the line. Call your representatives. Spread the word. Take action. #scicomm 🧪

SLU has earned an R1 designation from the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching in recognition of its prolific research activity. To qualify, universities must spend at least $50M on research & award more than 70 research doctorates in a year. Learn more ➡️ www.slu.edu/news/2025/fe...

Come join our faculty! We’re hiring.

The no cost extension button is back and at least some are being granted. If this applies to you, go for it. PLEASE SHARE

"These [NIH indirect cost reimbursement] cuts should be a rallying cry for higher education to come together to make the case for the American system of research and teaching,” writes @holdenthorp.bsky.social in a new #ScienceEditorial. scim.ag/4b2nv4D

OHIOANS: Please complete this action alert to send your state lawmakers a letter about OH SB 1, a bill that would gut free expression at all public higher education institutions in your state. Initial vote is tomorrow, don't delay!

This is not just for science but the academic freedom and for University system as a whole!

This is a room where we turn very modest salaries and budgets (and lots of coffee) into new knowledge, life-saving innovations, and technology that feeds business growth. It's literally the loom that spins hay into gold but these numpties are suddenly worried about the cost of hay.

🧵 If you’re applauding the abolishment of the Department of Education, you need to do a little research. You have ZERO clue what the DOE actually does. Here’s a reality check on what the Department of Education actually does: (1/14)

Another lawsuit challenging NIH cuts of indirect costs, this time from AAMC and groups representing medical centers, hospitals, public health schools

If anyone needs an Assistant Professor to serve on study section @nih for T or F or K99 awards that were removed bc of DEIJ efforts that were put into new sections- email me. I will say yes!

There are apparently several other suits in the works or filed. Trying to get details. They will likely hit the media tonight or tomorrow in any case…Stay tuned
