This has been a topic in my shame research, that we make people shameful so that we can make killing them easier. We teach people to avoid shame, and shamed people, to keep ourselves alive. It’s literally a matter of life and death for us to get a grip on our shame so we can survive together.

I weirdly love church lights, so it occurred to me I could start “collecting” them via photos. These are the lights at Church of the Master Lutheran church in LA. Right after I took this, this light started swaying for no discernible reason that I could tell. I may have upset a church light kami.

I often get cranky about wandering about on Ash Wednesday with ashes imposed but this is exactly how you do it. Don’t just get the ashes, do the things to burn the injustices down.

First time making biscuits with flaky layers! Having achieved lamination, I feel ready to take on anything today.

Nope: Shaming people to force them to change their identities or behaviors. Dope: Solidarity with people who are being shamed. Hope: Being so ashamed that this harm is happening that you change the world to end those systems of violent shaming. That’s your gospel lesson for today.

Easing into #Caturday

I have a whole dissertation (and book I’m trying to finish) on how part of the reason shame is so damaging is so few people elect to bear it so offload it on a few and then pretend it’s their fault for feeling bad. We should feel shame in this moment. Let’s bear it together so we can change things.

I spent 12 years working at a local newspaper that had a similar agenda, which was instrumental in destroying unions in the US. I carry the stain and shame of that complicity with me still.

My fave Star Trek novel is Diane Duane’s The Wounded Sky. I bought it when I was 11 or so and I think it took getting a theology PhD to fully get it. If you’ve never read the early Star Trek books, do it. Most written by women in the 70s/80s, they tend to be feminist, queer, weird & delightful AF.

Thinking about how happy I was to get the X gender marker on my passport. It took me 50+ years to find a name for the embodiment I exist in, now it feels kinda scary but … you know what? Shit on them, I’m still gonna be happy to have that X. It took 50+ years to get here. #agenderjoy #nonbinarypride

It’s #caturday. Are you ready?

Biscuits, anyone?

I have watched so many folks get abused by the mentality of “I have to get arrested to show I’m serious about the movement.” No, the state learned well from the days where protest arrests shook things up. Arrests should be strategic, if used at all, but there are lots of other movement strategies.

“Don’t comply in advance” is not advice for anyone who exists in precarity. Do what you have to to survive. Don’t let anyone shame you for that. If we are organizing and in solidarity, resistance is an ecosystem that gives people lots of ways to resist and assess their risks.

One of my faves, my friend & comrade Monica Trinidad has new art that can be freely downloaded. justseeds.org/graphic/be-l...

I’m going to use this as an examples for students so they understand why we cite sources. It’s not so folks can see that you’ve read the materials, it’s so that they can see that you are engaging in the debate in good faith, that you are representing arguments accurately and answering them justly.

Carl Schmitt is about to get a lot of attention in 3 … 2 …

It is perfectly legal to know your rights and to educate others about them, too. EVERYONE in the United States, citizen or not, has rights. I will not allow this administration to intimidate us from helping you know about them. Here’s our shareable guide ⬇️: (pt. 1/2)

Not everyone in your life has to be in the struggle with you. Especially if you believe that liberation is meant for everyone, including the oppressors.

Big actions like protests & arrests get attention, but it’s important to remember that resisting & changing an oppressive regime takes acts of resistance of all sizes, on all levels. Never let anyone tell you that being kind to one person isn’t enough. If it’s what you can do today, it’s enough.

Today I keep thinking of the scene in Star Trek: Next Gen, when Picard is being tortured by the Cardassians and they promise to free him if he just agrees with him that there are five lights in the room, when there are actually four. It’s the Gulf of Mexico.

If you're an educator or education is your interest, consider starting a freedom school in your communities. We started with a summer program for young people in Chicago. Children's Defense Fund has been offering literacy based freedom schools since the early 1990s. etc etc etc.

DEI was never meant to be a cure-all of all time for oppression. Its practices should change and grow as people change and grow. But as Rev. Osagyefo Sekou once pointed out, they don’t pull out the tanks and tear gas if you’re winning.

Really appreciating the ways in which @mashagessen.bsky.social exposes the anticipatory forgiveness we give ourselves by obeying in advance. It’s the shame we can expiate bc we “had a good reason” & survived, vs the shame of exposing ourselves & risking death, unless we stand together.

And also, that they have qualifications in multiple areas beyond what the job requires. Huge issue in academia, where marginalized scholars learn the canon AND the contextual and interdisciplinary research on top of that (and do more service/teaching). And are still told we aren’t rigorous enough.

ITS SHUT THE FUCK UP FRIDAY This is a very important message you should share with the people in your life that may be hitting the streets to protest: never talk to the police! WATCH:

The thing to remember about systemic change is it happens generationally, forward and backward, and geologically, in that you may not see what you’ve accomplished until centuries of dust have settled to reveal new mountains. Be present and do work now. Trust in communities past, present, future.

how i think i look when teaching / how i actually look

Hundreds of protesters rallied Thursday night in the rain outside Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, calling for the hospital to roll back recent restrictions on gender-affirming care for trans youth.

VAN NUYS WALKOUT: Add another school to the list - hundreds of Van Nuys High School students walked out in protest of Trump immigration policies Thousands of high school students across LA walked out of class today. Nearly a full week of sustained defiance & it’ll keep growing

VENICE HIGH- 100s of Venice High students walked out of class to protest today. There was likely near or at least 1,000 students from 7+ different schools who walked out across the county of Los Angeles, as the youth continue to mobilize anti-ICE, immigration rights protests 👀 THREAD of actions:

My #2 childhood fear was that my mom was going to get deported. I just led a “Know Your Rights” training for some immigrant members of my community, and that childhood fear and my adult shame that this is necessary (& also that this isn’t new really) are all fusing together. Goddamn us.

Hello, First Amendment protections! They’re going to be super surprised at how many Christians understand interreligious dialogue as an enactment of their religious freedom.

Crazy for You Ray of Light Cherish Into the Groove Open Your Heart

If you feel dismayed at the current cruelties but don’t know how to respond, remember no one is born knowing how to overthrow a dictator & also people have already been fighting for liberation long before now. Find your people. Make mistakes; your people are the ones who’ll help you learn from them.

I work at a PWI & I constantly have to be aware of the difference btwn system change to make my school just & DEI. The latter is often done performatively w/ little real impact, the former has to be done subversively but has real impact. I worry less abt losing DEI if we are working for real change.

Mood in LA right now

“How to preach about justice without ever saying the word” is an informal class at every mainline seminary already. We can show folks how it’s done!
