Labour does this because they know it won't lose them any votes. Taxing more fairly will do. The English would rather take a penny off a pauper than a pound off a billionaire. But yes, absolutely, fuck Keir Starmer for not showing some mettle. I've never been so disgusted with Labour

It's not spam. Please help if you can.

The disability benefits bill is always 'soaring'. I can't think of time when it wasn't described as such. Our current era of 'soaringness' has lots of causes but the main one is the arbitary decision to fix a notion there is a 'right amount' of benefits spending www.theguardian.com/society/2025...

"And yes, now that you mention it, we do have the feeling that we've been cheated."

Ironic too that that The Well-Beloved is one of Hardy’s lesser-known ones.

Sometimes my patience for ‘let people just enjoy things’ does start to fall apart.

A challenge to angry liberals: you have a few years to study Marxism and move left before Trump's term is over. The Dems are counting on you to help them return to the liberal status quo, which led to this moment in the first place. Don't fall for it.

The weary horror of waking up every morning and seeing them doing everything they said they were going to do, loudly and repeatedly and in public, but at the time all the very important people said 'oh that's just nonsense talk, nobody would really do that' and so it went on to happen.

At some point, I'd love to own all fifty years of Peanuts but, as of today, I've now got all of the 1960s and that'll do me for now.

If you are a white supremacist marching masked through a city, it’s free speech and protected. If you’re a green card holder protesting on a college campus, it’s apparently not. Free speech and freedom being eroded every day. apnews.com/article/colu...

I just realized that they were all probably paid honoraria for this shit too

What the f everybody. The arrogance here, just, wow.

I don't agree with Johnny's conclusions, but the point about the midlist is well made, and also depressing. It overlaps with the Star Trek problem - series used to have 22 episodes per season to develop characters. Most of those episodes were mid, but they established a show in people's minds.

About a quarter of a century ago I was warning everyone that the internet would destroy the midlist. Mass appeal, big money stuff would survive. Niche stuff made for peanuts would survive. But the area in-between would be hollowed out. And, lo, it came to pass.

Wow! He is a brave man!

Cape Fear (1992)

Here’s “Two-Pins”, who was bought by my Dad for my Mum on their honeymoon in Rye in 1977. Perhaps I should call him Two-Pnins.

For #IWD in 2023 I made this, a playlist of 100 women composers. open.spotify.com/playlist/0P5...

The film is ghastly too.

I remember Channel 4 News more than once responded to US school shootings by interviewing Shriver.

Great critic on one of our greatest writers.

I wrote about sex workers and the Academy Awards! (oh dear, just noticed they have Louise Brooks winning an Oscar in the subheading there - will have to try and sort that out...)

I can't be the only person who feels that the official Sesame Street website missed a trick by not first asking you to accept all Cookie Monsters

I keep thinking of the time Kelvin Mackenzie went on Pointless Celebrities and nobody stopped to think about whether that was a bad idea until after it had gone out.

I couldn't find a good image of it online, but some of my favorite acting ever is after Little Bill has beaten the shit out of English Bob, to such a degree that everyone in town falls quiet, and Hackman's face registers a shock, almost terrified feeling of "What have I done?"

In our new episode we’re kicking off a fun new project! @bibliopaul.bsky.social and I talk about reading groups and introduce the M&G Novella Reading Group. First book in April—come join us! The link is in the show notes, and I’ll also share it in a reply here. open.substack.com/pub/mookse/p...

Another day, another email from a cranky "AI" supporter having a temper tantrum over the fact that I'll ban them for using their favorite toy in our house. We do not allow the use of generative "AI" at all. That isn't going to change and you aren't being oppressed by our policy.

It settles down fine afterwards, but thought the opening fight in Daredevil: Born Again was the most incoherently directed and shot action sequence I have ever seen.
