They’re dismantling anything with a hint of DEI based on speculative claims of unfair hiring, and at the same time firing objectively outstanding employees. This is not about fairness or merit.

I don’t have words for what’s happening to my friends and colleagues at NOAA right now… absolutely reckless destruction of one of the world’s premier science-driven, public-serving organizations.

"The 15-Hour City believes everything has its place. Houses go in one location, businesses in another, and in between is a dark sea of soul-crushing concrete and asphalt."

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: well done, protest voters

I got my first taste for research through an REU. Went on to do a PhD. Depriving undergrads of these opportunities — which are extremely cost effective for the taxpayer — harms us all.

I’m not a religious person, but the richest people in the world cutting aid to the poorest people in the world is exactly the prototypical “straight to hell” behavior I learned about in Sunday school.

It’s simple: I’m much more concerned about one of my daughter’s classmates or teammates being excluded or condemned for who they are than I am about my daughter interacting with a trans classmate or teammate.

Bad news for egg

Federal workers, we recognize that this is an unpredictable time. Our team is actively pairing your tips with reporters on this list and across our newsroom to make sure you're speaking to someone with the right expertise. How to get in touch:

This administration is giving me real “principal grunts some thoughts and underling ideologues run with it to carry out their own twisted agenda” vibes

The biased framing of this “assessment” is so blatantly anti-scientific.

Welcome @costasamaras.com! Pro tip: don’t buy the giant ketchups. Buy the “picnic pack” that comes with two large but reasonably sized ketchups, one mustard, and one relish. Was on sale for under $8 the other day!

Dear federal scientists: If you have been affected by the probationary firings and would be willing to speak with Science, please reach out to me by email ([email protected]) or on Signal. We can guarantee annonymity.

What these nihilistic vandals are doing to dismantle science & medicine—generations of expertise & public service & life improving benefits—is cultural revolution level national self harm. No foreign foe could inflict such brutal damage & senseless suffering on US so fast & effectively & unresisted.

Metaphor for our times

To public servants laid off by DOGE: I’m so sorry for what you’re going through. As someone who started my career at a fed agency, I know how important public service is—and the work you’ve done truly matters. If I can help in any way, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

Starting to hear about mass firings of "probationary" employees at agencies. What's that? Employees have to work for 1yr before civil service protections kick in. If they don't perform, they can be fired. But these aren't at-will employees and it's not clear firings are following the law.

My heart breaks thinking about the many newly hired public servants that chose to devote themselves to serving the American people and received this in return. They deserve better. The American people deserve better. www.politico.com/news/2025/02...

go.bsky.app/T2sZdkD Scrolled through my following list to find PhD/postdocs/early-career practitioners (as mentioned in their bios). Missed many, and I'm happy to add!

There has been a knocked down highway signpost laying in the grass near my Metro station for years. After another accident, a bumper sat on the sidewalk for weeks until a pedestrian put the whole thing in a Metro trash can. The sand they put down to soak up engine fluids is still a mud pile.

This is a big deal. Initial market for batteries was regulation, which extremely small. Resource adequacy/capacity and energy market are much, much larger. The more storage becomes “in the money” in energy, the more it becomes a cheap capacity resource. (Low missing money = cheap capacity!)

THREAD: In 2023, I received an envelope with no return address. Inside was a flash drive containing tens of 1000s of secret files. It came from a vigilante with a tumultuous past, who'd conducted a years-long undercover operation. He didn’t tell the FBI or his family. He only told me.

The New England states have requested that ISO-NE issue an RFP for long-term transmission needs, which will strengthen the grid and enable the integration of new renewable resources in Maine to benefit the entire region. This is a big deal. #energysky www.iso-ne.com/static-asset...
