I have always believed that this should have been framed such that the *men* were swapped since everyone and everything else remained in place.

If you need something else to listen to tonight, might I suggest this new oral history recording with Mr. Baseball himself from the County Stadium grandstand.

Very quick read!

This pitch was originally called a ball, then overturned to a strike This pitch is the pitch with the largest distance to the edge of the strike zone so far, and exactly the kind of pitch the challenge is expected to catch baseballsavant.mlb.com/sporty-video...

Thank you @evanfmoore.bsky.social for this great preview of Don Zminda's new book! I don't know a lot about baseball, but I do know Chicago and I knew as soon as Don pitched me that I wanted to publish this book. Out next week from @illinoispress.bsky.social

Okay, which of you hasn't joined SABR but has intended to for years? (Because now would be a really great time to join, not just bc if you give my name when you join I might get this lapel pin...) sabr.org/500-club/

Great reading this morning.

As someone who spends a lot time thinking about the values I want to teach my kid (besides PLEASE DON’T EAT DIRT), the thing I keep coming back to is this: I want him to believe that the strongest, bravest thing he can do is give a shit about other people—especially ones who aren’t like him at all.

this is absolute insanity

The New York Times has names The Last Manager a biography of @orioles.com legend Earl Weaver one of the 9 books they recommend this week. #orioles #mlb #baseball #books www.nytimes.com/2025/02/27/b...

Thanks to Paul's article, I was inspired to try and crack this case and confirm Jim Britt's death date. I had a breakthrough yesterday and was able to push it over the line. Here's a quick thread explaining my process.

It’s a truly great book!

I almost bought a book on Amazon today, but then I went to eBay and got it slightly used for half the price. Boycotting Amazon is fun AND easy.

crazy how stellar reporting can be good for business

Remember that WTF @davidmcswane.bsky.social story about a Montana doctor linked to a string of suspicious deaths? Well, even though he's now under criminal investigation, the state just renewed his medical license: www.propublica.org/article/thom...

Congratulations to all! Richly deserved, as usual.

Percival Everett's JAMES reworks and reimagines the story of Huckleberry Finn by telling it from the perspective of the escaped slave Jim, giving him depth and identity beyond anything Twain considered. My review of this year's National Book Award winner: bit.ly/4ifF8jJ

The alternative is 0% Relative to the cost of production and delivery, wouldn't breakeven be something like 2% or 5% or something? 36% seems like an insanely high ROI

My subscription to @stathead.com renewed again today. I’ve been a subscriber for (at least) 18 years now, back when the @baseball-reference.com home page looked more like this, and it’s still worth every penny. And yes, I just clicked through to Rickey Henderson’s page and it’s still awe-inspiring.

I’ve been having such a great time reading my @baseballprospectus.com annual since it arrived last week. Honored to have been a part of it again. Cannot recommend buying this book (and subscribing to BP) enough.

You’re all in for a wild ride and I couldn’t be happier for you! @jmjournalist.bsky.social just nails it here, first page to last.

Probably only one day in my life when I wake up to a rave review of my book in the New York Times and that day is today. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/24/b...

Rave @nytimes.com review of Earl Weaver bio Weaver is the subject of a vivid new bio, The Last Manager, by the writer and former #Orioles scout John W. Miller. Most sports books are pop flies to the infield. Miller’s is a screaming triple into the left field corner. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/24/b...

On one hand $6 eggs are rough (though the simple solution has always been to eat fewer), but on the other hand $8 for a carton of eggs and a Manny Mota RC is a helluva deal.

Yeah. It’s good!

Excellent choice!

Someday people will forget that not everything in every store was behind a stupid locked cabinet that you have to hunt down an employee to open. You used to just be able to go to Walmart and toss a Nintendo controller into your cart with the Chex mix. It was called shopping and it was great

Dr. Ellen Hendriksen's first book, How to Be Yourself, was an excellent look at dealing with social anxiety; her second, How to Be Enough, tackles perfectionism in its many forms. My review: bit.ly/3D1oGop

Last year for @baseballprospectus.com I spent a lot of time thinking about the Colorado Rockies. Today I surveyed the 2025 season to figure out who will be this year's most forgotten, forgettable team.

ESPN’s treatment of baseball (outside of live coverage) has been disheartening for all who care about the sport. MLB spells it out: “We have not been pleased with the minimal coverage that MLB has received on ESPN’s platforms over the past several years outside of the actual live game coverage.”

Oh, I forgot to include this in my thread earlier. Since baseball is underway, this is a good chance to increase the amount of baseball on your feed. Here's the Baseball Prospectus starter pack: bsky.app/starter-pack...

I mean it should already be in the public domain. Flemming died in 1964 what are we even doing?
