Favourite colour green and fluffy hair enjoyer may also be a bias factor, but I rarely see people say the things b&w was criticised for at the time (pokemon design opinions, the usual) and mostly just see praise for it now. I just flat out think it's a good game for stimulating the imagination!

It's common enough for people who played the originals at release like myself to get up on their high horse about it, but b&w turned out to be my favourite entry after decades of these games simply because the narrative and gameplay had cohesion that made it feel like the stakes were meaningful 👍

I think a lot about a physical therapist telling me about how she got a huge influx of patients around covid lockdown bc all the techies had to go home and work from their shitty work setups instead of office-provided Herman Miller chairs and shit… now imagine the humble gamer.

it was an app store knock off game that has become an earworm for people now

I should probably figure out some reading so I can brush up on lit analysis so I can talk about this beyond a highschool level if it's going to remain a core part of my interests huh =_=

twin peaks has the benefit of very charming main characters to smooth over the entry point and this is why normal (boring!) people don't like season 2. Season 3 is incredible in that "art" sense also and I'm sorry to everyone who is too stupid to get that creators don't owe any audience anything

(also don't worry about my little rant there, I imagine you will also bump in to these opinions. I feel confident to engage with this narrative topic with you bc I know you also like to Use your Brain and Heart about things that overlap my interests also)

yeah I think that is more the calibre of show you'd want to be watching with covid lmao you do not need to be making yourself any more miserable

on the other extreme you have people that boldly post "Trying to solve the mystery: I think [x] happened" and x will be something literally textual. This is my hell being a guy who almost exclusively seeks out these kinds of narratives.

On this topic I think it's also a huge disservice to expect these shows to serve up black & white "literal" and "not literal" parts, there's the trend of people trying to dissect "what really happened" = clickbait nonsense to me. The opposite of analysis. Reduction of the narrative. Antidiscussion

I think utena still may need an open mind to not bounce off (especially with covid brain lmao) of due to having to painstakingly explain its own language to the viewer but... Conviction and intention and direction in storytelling is so sexy. And it knows exactly what it wants to say.

(It is hard for me to explain how e.g. twin peaks handles this without just giving up on itself in posts as I am out of practise & also unwell atm but I implore you to convince yourself unfortunately you saw a disappointing show and it's not reflective of other works it is often compared to lol)

Tldr; The narrative styles of the aforementioned titles feel pointless if they're telling ultimately nihilistic & cynical stories. You can dress them up, but if it's just a distraction (including "everything is good & will carry on", thus nothing matters) then uhh yep your themes are gone, poof!

I stand what I said by before: you will need a break from this type of storytelling, find a pallet cleanser! But for real I don't think this show is it. Sorry you can't get your time back, and if I could have stopped you and pointed you in a better direction I would have lol

I think the intense opposite - most people I know that like twin peaks, utena, etc, stuff heavy with obfuscation, are pretty disappointed by the weak effort of penguindrum to culminate into anything coherent the way these other shows do. They're devastating, focused and intentional in comparison

difficult to condense all my thoughts into Small Posts but. I have meditated on this for about ten years now. Not an author with the best of intentions either. Happy to chat more about it when you're done or decide not to bother lol

The thing is ikuhara shows are like a catalogue and talking about them in isolation is ultimately a very stupid thing to do (due to the Patterns) but like you do just need a pallet cleanser from what I personally just see as misery porn at the end of the day

[*scheming how I'm going to lay down the breadcrumbs to get you to watch utena instead after a long break so that this unfortunate side journey you've had doesn't impact your reading of it*]
