Not to be *that guy* but bluesky seems to have a fair number of people who aren’t neurotypical; subtle jokes may not be obvious. I used to teach Swift’s A Modest Proposal and you’d be amazed how many students were horrified by it.
I was amused but understood that they were reading it literally.
like, no neurodivergence explanation needed. Humor is very context dependent, and most context clues are hidden on the internet: no body language, os situational clues, abundance of niche memes and content reaching unintended audiences.
I am guilty of this. my autism really makes it hard for me to tell a joke even in real life at times, i like comedy but some types are hard to tell. On another note I wonder if Language barriers for others might be a problem as well or even regional differences in English?
The world has gone so crazy these days, not only is Poe's Law still massively in effect on the internet, it also has strongly leaked out into the IRL world. And, sadly, so has Poe's Inverse Law.
People need to start posting a big J on the end of their post so everyone knows it’s a joke and I don’t look stupid by replying to posts about having sex with a whale and how infeasible that would be.
Honestly dude Im starting to get sick of jokes. Im the woke left that wants to ban comedy. Jokes just lose their lightheartedness when they're obviously covering for a massive problem no one wants to deal with, and there is no serious engagement to be found with the issues at hand.
I feel like that’s what a lot of people were doing back when this place opened which is why we ended up with so much dick on the timeline and people posting about cum and food
Also I've saw people make cum frosted cinnamon rolls on here at least twice. Semenmon? Semmanom? Senamon? I dunno. Hard to say but apparently fun to make.
People should also put {{ }} around the funny or satirical part of the post so we know which part to take seriously, and there should also be joke alt-text that explains what the joke is.
I think it's just an English-speaking Internet thing, 'cause it sure ain't specific to Bluesky. If I had a nickel for every one of my obviously-sarcastic Reddit comments that someone took as totally sincere (sometimes even *with* the /s!) I'd have, well, a lot more nickels than is reasonable.
Everyone's humor being slightly different, social media just makes it harder because it's like if a random stand-up crowd wandered into conversations you were having in real life.
Hard to know if someone's making a dry joke or just being serious with a wry tone if you don't know them.
sure but then... shake one's head and proceed with one's day? why do people jump to pontification? what do they think they're accomplishing? do they think they'll change a stranger's mind by berating them online? do they think onlookers think they're cool? what is the expected result
I don’t know what to think!!?? Considerate people put a 🤣🤣 at the end of a funny post to signify that one is supposed to react accordingly. I’ve been left hanging here, but I’m attempting to cover all bases, by following and blocking you.
To actually be serious about this for a moment, wasn't that the entire reason why tone tags were invented?? Like, the solution was already there, it just kinda died off like it was some gimmicky trend at some point.
The confusion is directly due to the propaganda shock and awe campaign. It's harder and harder for Joe American to tell true/false, truth/satire, right/wrong. It's by design and I hope experts have some advice!
One thing I've noticed, that echo chambers are less common compared to Reddit. Of course, I mostly fall into the "left-leaning / liberal" part of the chambers, but I still have some disagreements, and I'm not always automatically bombarded with negative, insulting rhetoric
If you can find this post by the user Satan, you'll have a really fun time reading all the extremely intelligent replies underneath the image, many of which are most certainly not accusing the poster of misinformation.

fantastic people, amazing website
I am blocked by so many people.
some people have no joy in their lives and it shows
I was amused but understood that they were reading it literally.
Some of these people are barely hanging on.
(And to be abundantly clear because it’s necessary, this is a joke.)

i think the root of the problem is no one knows what a joke is or how to interact with it
