I'm glad the left has settled on immortality as a non-negotiable requirement for seeking public office. Makes it very clear that they are always going to find reasons to hate.

I like Sanders and if someone younger ran in Vermont and pointed out that he stands a not insignificant risk of dying in office I think that would be a perfectly fair argument in their favor.
look at all the leftists responding to you saying he should retire. you don't say the same about your favorite geriatrics which means it's YOU in the cult. wake up!
If this is the bullshit you have to manufacture in your mind-palace in order to convince yourself that you're a good person then i would probably go back to the drawing board
..."immortality"? how about just not putting elderly congressmembers with known terminal or debilitating diagnoses in key committee/leadership positions or encouraging them to stay in office/run again when they're so sick they can't even show up to vote? does that really sound outrageous to you?
Yeah that's totally what we're asking for.
We're definitely not asking for elderly officials to step aside so that younger officials can take their place and ensure that those in power stay relevant to the current world. Definitely not that
/sarcasm
Hey Jeff, remember how for the last decade you called women like Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib racist and sexist? And how you got everything you wanted, the Democratic Party you wanted? And now that party is collaborating with a Nazi takeover and dying in office?
I'm glad neolibs have settled on being intentionally obtuse at all times. Yeah let's keep doing exactly what we're doing and not change our strategy at all, it's really been working out for everybody you disingenuous moron.
Yeah bud, asking for representatives during a fascist takeover of the government to not be 75-80 years old with one foot actively in the grave is exactly like making immortality a prerequisite for office. You’re very smart
Because RBG riding it out until she died in office turned out so well for us, right? Your "touch stove" policies would rather them all authoritarianly hold onto power until they die in office so things can get worse faster rather than admit things could get better. Stupid.
The folks in your comments should take these apart and tell everyone what the optimal distribution would be since age is apparently the most important thing.
Yes it's extremely unreasonable to expect your elected representative to meet the extremely high bar of "being alive". Sorry for demanding too much from the most powerful people in the country
Explain what target you think has moved. I don't want geriatrics working in Congress. It would be better for everyone if they stopped selfishly clinging to power and went home to their families. The only one twisting themselves in knots here is you
Either lead or get out of the way. We no longer have the luxury of pacifying elected reps unable to actively serve our interests. I don’t care whether it is due to aging or any other reason.
“Be fit enough to do the job” feels pretty normal! You should be able to have meetings after 2PM!
And of course, perhaps if your health worsens mid-term you can choose that opportunity to consider passing to baton to the many other capable people able to handle your position.
“The left” is arguing for sensible term limits and for our respected political leaders to retire happily with the confidence that their legacy and dignity is preserved. Perhaps Dem elders continue to legislate themselves to death because they’re concerned about the party’s future (people like you)
"Dems shouldn't run old candidates" also "I'm too busy to run myself or find someone else."
In the 2022 election I actively looked for someone younger to run for my seat. Everyone was apparently too busy to take a few hours a month out of their time.
The fact that Pelosi and the DNC chose to replace AOC with Connolly, and that in general they actively undermine younger progressive leaders like David Hogg, is the previous poster's fault? This is taking the 'we didn't fail our constituents, they failed us' talking point to a wacky extreme.
Bro the gerontocracy is a Democratic Party policy. It's from the top down. When they do get young blood they black ball them out of leadership or they primary them with a 68 year old cancer survivor. Young people do run and the party as a whole has made it their policy to reject them.
Your proposed strategy of giving Republicans big margins instead of forcing them to uncertain, razor-thin ones might appeal to a leadership riddled with hearing loss and dementia, so I can see the target audience. But I don't think it sounds sensible to normal people.
the bigger the margin, the *more* important it is that we do everything we can to have more votes, especially the things that would be trivially easy, like having representatives who aren't incredibly likely to die soon
If the Democrats had one more living representative the bill wouldn't have passed and if they had three more (the number of democrats who have died in office since Trump's inauguration) the abstaining Republicans wouldn't be enough to pass it either.
If dems don't respond to the grievances that people rightfully have, they will never win another major election. The dems win by making life better and responding to voters. They need to do more of that.
My comment isn't about this particular bill, but a trend within the democratic party to ignore leftward movement while pandering to right wing actors. They need to respond to the left or they will continue to lose.
If we're talking about trends, then I'm talking about the trend to blame the Democrats for the Republicans, like if the Republicans don't have free will.
Even with falsehoods, like claiming the Dems are pandering to the right even though they voted against this.
Libs can’t handle sane people don’t mindlessly worship fascism enabling corpses like they do. That’s what they have to cry about how “unreasonable” requests for things like healthy candidates/politicians to actually oppose fascism are
remember when republicans tarred counseling for dying patients as "death panels"? nearly 20 years later, americans remain so comically incapable of acknowledging their own mortality that elected leaders contort their fear of death into shit like "a young 74, cancer notwithstanding"
Thanks for your efforts to give Republicans a little breathing room in their slim Congressional majority. It's exactly the kind of bipartisanship that helps the Trump administration reach its goals with little to no resistance, which is exactly what Democrats voted for.
Literally what are you talking about? We’re not looking for immortality we’re looking for 75 year old men with esophageal cancer to not jeopardize the House by seeking re-election. We are asking these men to step aside and make room for up and coming representatives to take h the next step up
I don't want to know how someone becomes this dishonest/stupid
what do you gain for making excuses for them?
the real hate comes from people justifying pulling this man from his family, whom he should have spent his last years with, over struggling to do his elected duty while battling cancer
saying incredibly dumb shit in order to get mean comments in the replies that you can then point to as an example of how unruly and ill-behaved the leftists are
Sure, that's what happened, not an octogenarian cynically rigging the vote for the Oversight Committee during a run-up to open fascism, putting an end-stage cancer patient in the seat so that someone who might actually take the job seriously wouldn't get it. 🙄
Yeah man it's either 74 with cancer or immortal, it's not like the specific ask was made time and time again over the past years that maybe Democrats step down to allow someone *younger* to take their place
I don't hate you, man, I just wish you didn't think it was unreasonable for people to want a responsive representative party that's not on the right. You're acting like asking for that is some sort of vile discriminatory act. It's actually normal. Which your post is not.
The liberals in post-commune Paris spoke like this to justify mass murder and repression of communards....decades after the barricades had been torn down.
You Might be happier if you didn’t fire off indefensible nonsense and then spend hours trying to argue about it with an infinite number of reasonably confused people
This is helpful for context of the meme he was referencing although it was, at a minimum, a bad choice for him to change "As someone who is a scientist" to "As someone who is a Ephebophile".
It’s honestly impressive that you can hear “maybe retire before you’re statistically likely to die in office in your 70s or 80s” and interpret it as “you have to live forever”
Jeff seems like a lot of people in the comments here are posting a screencap of you admitting to wanting to fuck teenagers idk if you have already addressed this elsewhere but just out of curiosity do you still identify as an ephebophile

2) He is currently platforming & elevating younger members of the party instead of stifling them. Please be fucking for real.

"i would like my congressman to be immortal"
Yes these are definitely the same
Does that make you rethink anything?
Jeff, give me literally all of your money, your job, and log off to a permanent end.
And of course, perhaps if your health worsens mid-term you can choose that opportunity to consider passing to baton to the many other capable people able to handle your position.
You're being disingenuous.
Try debating in good faith like a rational, mature adult.
You may find it fulfilling.
After all, the only thing that matters is your grievances against the Democrats.
three democrats have died this session
sometimes math is hard
"Dems shouldn't run old candidates" also "I'm too busy to run myself or find someone else."

We refer to the bare minimum candidate for a position as a "warm body" for a reason
I was gonna add "and stupid" but that would be redundant to say about you.
what do you gain for making excuses for them?

heres another one for you. enjoy
This party needs to burn. Useless. 🔥
Decades of research upended in a single post.
Keeping people in office until they die means that they eventually do, and sometimes you need those votes on important votes with narrow margins.
After that, just pass the torch
By that standard no one could ever be in congress!
There exist zero people under the age of 70! I'm sure of this!
