Saw Galaxy Quest in theaters last night, a perfect movie. Alan Rickman’s arc is so beautiful, finding real meaning in a line he used to scorn, always find it very moving

Tim Allen soars when playing deluded weirdos with an inflated sense of self importance before the film makes him come crashing down to earth (this can also apply to his Buzz Lightyear performance in the first Toy Story)
They got him in the perfect window of obviously being able to play an asshole while still being able to pull out what humanity he needed for the heartfelt parts
I spend so much mental real estate thinking about the way Tony Shalhoub deadpans "That's a hell of a thing." after getting teleported for the first time. One of the best ensemble casts in comedy history
Guy being the only one to not even get hurt when he spent the whole movie talking about how he was going to be the first one to die makes me laugh every time.
The little giddy giggle he has once he "has an idea" and then him, Guy, and Laliari watching the results proudly. "It's the simple things in life you treasure" indeed.
I rewatched it earlier this year and had to pause and rewind because there was a moment-- when he gets all excited to show his co-stars the alien technology --when I caught myself thinking, "Wait... is Tim Allen *cute* in this? Is he charming me with his exuberant grin?"
Believe it or not there was a time in my youth when women wanted Tim Allen. He was the "everyman" they saw their husband's, but funnier, & more charming.
On the other hand, Galaxy Quest was the best script he was ever handed.
My late husband and I saw Galaxy Quest, with Dutch subtitles, in an Art Deco cinema in Amsterdam when it came out. Have loved it ever since. And yes - Alan Rickman is superb.
I sat back-to-back with him in Joe Allen’s in London once. My god … that voice …
Was talking about this with my wife last time we watched it but he’s like scarily good in it, obviously inspired by Shatner but never feels like a lame pastiche. He also reminds me a lot of my dad in it which is always kind of strange.
Justin Long calling Tim Allen's character to apologize for being a LARPer fan, going on and on, "I know it's just a show", you can feel his humiliation.
"It's real."
"I KNEW IT!!!"
One of my fav comedy scenes ever. Beautiful and hilarious nerd vindication.
that 30 rock bit where tracy tries to find his roots to be a real actor and he turns into a crying mess and goes back to making crap like live-action garfield because he hates feeling
Or a season 2 Sopranos episode where Christopher takes an acting class, but it starts to make him feel really vulnerable so he starts beating the shit out of his scene partner.
Ah, Galaxy Quest, a shining artifact of mortal creativity! A tale of heart, humor, and triumph woven seamlessly. It is what a movie should be, a vessel of joy, depth, and transformation. Even the hollow ones find their spark within it.
Truly, a treasure of your kind's storytelling.
My favorite fun fact about this movie is during the scene with all the pounding steel cylinders. Sigourney Weaver’s characters say something like “screw this” but her mouth says something more like “fuck this!”
It’s such a well thought out script that both parodies
And respects the subject matter and its fans.
Not easy.
And yeah , alan rickman
Is brilliant, as usual.
Hell yeah. Rickman was fantastic, but everybody was great, really. I've only seen it on the small screen. Must have been amazing to see it in a theater. Classic movie.
A classic and to my mind a much under-praised film. Rickman is superb. In the light of the Trump victory we would do well to remember Commander Peter Quincy Taggart's rallying cry of " Never give up, never surrender," and all being well "By Grabthar's hammer, we [may] live to tell the tale.
That movie was so much about the Fans too. The dreamers, artists, future engineers, and designers who want to take what inspires them and the people who inspire them and bring it into our Universe.
Got to see it in theatres earlier this year. It’s very good at implying a show that is recognisably basically Star Trek but with its own terminology and lore. Like how Alan Rickman is Patrick Stewart-type playing a Spock-like character whose honour line could be Worf’s and that all makes sense.
One of my favourites. Comedy genius, great cast. Sigourney Weaver is amazing and Alan Rickman is truly brilliant, love how p…ed off he is signing autographs
The bit about the cast fearing for their safety on that hydraulic-rigged-up bridge set (which Paramount should have bought after production wrapped) puts what people think about actors being overpaid in a new light.
I watch it a couple of times a year…just to believe goodness can beat evil AND imperfect souls can become an improbable heroes doing good against evil doers
My favorite part is that Tony Shaloub’s character was meant to be stoned out of his mind the entire time. That’s why he’s so chill in all of his scenes.
Saw it in theaters as a kid. Absolutely loved it. My brother and dad were big Star Trek nerds and they were in hysterics the whole time. Honestly the best Star Trek movie made.
His pained expression during that is pure gold. No one else depicts scorn and self loathing for being pushed to doing something they don't want like Alan Rickman
This was an affectionate sendup, not a merciless putdown. Still makes me chuckle just to think about it. I think they won a Hugo award for the script -- and deserved it.
Classic. But the real stunner for me is the parallel aspect of childlike innocence, the need to believe so much that they alter their realities, and growth for the actors, the Thermians, & the convention trekkies (questies). Mind blowing anywhere but in LMAO comedy? 🧠 melt #scriptsky #galaxyquest
One of my top 10 favorite movies – every character every line— I can remember the first time I saw I in theaters and I was laughing so hard that I was afraid to breathe for missing the next line.
It has always been one of my favorite films. Alan Rickman was wonderful. Everyone grows so much during the film and do great things together. Very heartwarming.
Yes, just watched Die Hard a couple of nights ago and was surprised to see Alan Rickman had played the villain. I can’t think of any character he played that was not done to perfection.
I was 9 when my dad and I saw it the theater. We caught a 11:30pm showing on Dec 31, 1999. We were quite happy to see the world hadn't ended when the movie was over.
Yes, it's a tough dilemma. But that movie is so good. You have to ignore Tim Allen's Tim Allenness in real life and just enjoy the movie for what it is. Brilliant!
Everyone is so good in that movie.
I would guess you know it was basically a parody of the original Star Trek. Shatner did not treat his much lower-paid co-stars very well at all, Nimoy hated Spock, etc. But the movie is a great one.
It was so long ago, I honestly don’t remember if I ever saw it in a theater. I know I have watched the DVD multiple times. Alan Rickman is wonderful in that movie.
I turned back, and Tim is completely emotional; heart-wrenching, actually. He says, 'Yeah, I don't like these feelings I'm having; I'd like to go back to the trailer.' I said 'Okay, fine.' And Alan Rickman said 'Oh my God, I think he just experienced acting.' 2/2
Very few actors could make that role cary the weight that it did, a jaded actor comes to terms with, and then truly embodies, a role he’s detested for decades. And all for the good of beings who truly believed in that character.
Alan Rickman was a true talent who is very missed.
It’s always a good time to watch “Galaxy Quest.” It’s hysterically funny satire, but it has kindness and hugeness of heart. Rickman is fantastic, but the whole cast shines.
I first saw it because I needed to waste 2 hours downtown and it was the only thing starting. As I am not a Tom Alan fan I got really high and expected the worst.
How wrong I was! Everyone shines, the script is great, and they lovingly skewered StarTrek in all the right ways
Fun fact: Although they couldn't say it outright due to the PG-13 rating, Tony Shalhoub's character was canonically high during the entire adventure. It's why he's constantly shown eating snacks and is so much more chill than the rest of the cast. So you getting high to see it was quite appropriate.
I've tried watching it about 5 times. Can't seem get it. Always give up. Will probably try again after reading all the comments. That's what usually happens.
I remember accidentally coming across this movie and loving it immediately. Alan Rickman is always amazing. Sidenote: I loved Rickman as Marvin in Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, as well.

Galaxy Quest
Big Trouble
If you've never seen Big Trouble, I highly recommend it. A great ensemble cast directed by Barry Sonnenfeld.
LAUGH TILL I CRY, THANK GOD FOR YOU MISSI PYLE
Every performance in that movie is 11/10. Every. Single. One.
It's when Sam Rockwell takes a role and does it in the way only he can, and elevates it and the scene and the entire production.
That is Sam-Rockwelling.
(Tell me he wasn't the BEST thing about Iron Man 2!)
On the other hand, Galaxy Quest was the best script he was ever handed.

(just kidding, Princess Bride is more of a Star Wars movie)
Brilliant actor RIP

So underrated or unknown by so many 🤬
Wanted to see why it was in theaters...
I have only seen it on home screens, and every time that shot happens I feel envy...

Mind you. I was 8 years old. Never seen anything Star Trek. But I liked Tim Allen in The Santa Clause.
25 years later, I love the movie now
Hmm, won a Nebula as well.
Truly madly deeply
What a movie!
WOA!
But no...I left it
- like not wishing to mess with a Ming vase.
😄
Everyone is so good in that movie.
Galaxy Quest director Dean Parisot recalled a time Tim Allen was unsettled by a scene he was performing 1/2
Alan Rickman was a true talent who is very missed.
like can we TALK about domino

Great movie.
