Fun fact: the game Monopoly (originally called the Landlord's Game) was created to promote Georgism. Apparently Parker Brothers removed the Georgist rules, leaving only the set of rules intended to show how bad monopolies are, which is why no one has fun playing Monopoly.
I despise the game and I would not watch this. I also didn’t and don’t have any desire to watch Wolf of Wall Street. I see no benefit to elevating the behavior depicted.
I read that project got killed, because it was a stupid idea from the get-go. Just more nonsense from corporations trying to figure out how to make more money off their "intellectual assets" and if you own board games this is your move. 🤦♀️
I don't know, they still sell so many Monopoly (and many other) games, don't they? They need to stay in their lane, tho. Nobody thinks a Monopoly or Chutes and Ladders or Candyland movie is what we need for entertainment.
Sure but that's probably not what they have in mind, haha. Your idea would make a great pair for a double feature with Attack of the Killer Tomatoes. I might pay to see that. 😆
What I love most about E.J. Magie was that she was a social and economic scientist before there was even a field.
The game is a genuine economic simulation using people instead of computers to compute outcomes. It's fucking brilliant, even if some of the theories still need work.
I am no expert on various taxation models, and her alternate rules were probably far from perfect but what a bold concept to gamefy economic models to show alternate ways of living.
I imagine you know about Second Life? Philip Rosedale built it largely to experiment with alternate models, like Maggie. He hired economists to ensure LindenDollars would be the first truly stable virtual currency.
Hopefully, they’re making a movie about how a woman created the game and a man stole her creation and even though everyone knew it was hers they still allow him to get a pattern on it and make a ton of money when he sold it to the toy manufacturers and she got nothing.
Monopoly is a reflection of life. The vast majority of people start playing half way through the game when all the properties, houses and hotels have already been bought up.
Monopoly Lifesized has been played since October in Denver. It’s been held over for two months because of its popularity. 4 teams chose their game token (cast member) and proceed to roll oversized dice, visit the Community Chest and have a great time playing. Playing only lasts 1 hour.
It’s because the Barbie movie was successful and instead of thinking people want movies about women, made by women, for women.. they said “people love toys and games!”
The only Monopoly movie they should make should be about the woman who *actually* invented it, but a man came along, stole her idea, sold it to a board game company, and took credit for it.
A world where someone invents a board game to illustrate the true nature of Capitalism, and the game becomes trademarked and marketed for a century by a corporation that holds the monopoly on it, yes
Will it be like Jamanji or Minecraft movies? Or will it be the story of how Monopoly boards were used to help Allied prisoners of war escape Nazi prison camps? https://youtu.be/VfmK5_n7XVE?si=WkaEeUhf5eGcHIdf
This remake and most remakes are to retain ownership of an intellectual property license that is considered valuable in the intellectual property market.
Literally rich bastards doubling down on their holdings, bluffing their friends about how much the rest of us value the IP. Criminally bad trash.
My guess is to make the Monopoly owner into the "good guy* giving homes to people.
Idk how they'll get around the universal basic income thing that "pass go, collect 200" though.
They can try to call it wages from a job, but it's not... I'm an unemployed homeowner who gets a benefit.
Monopoly was already created as satire for the state of things when it was made under the name "the landlord game". Things were bad then, they're magnitudes worse now.

Eat just a few billionaires and the rest will fall in line. Because nothing brings people together like BBQ.

AFAIK, a man repatented her game & sold it to Parker Brothers. They offered her $500 and promised to distribute her smarter* set of rules...
* Georgists wanted to replace all landlord ownership with everyone who borrowed any land to pay a single tax to fund the gov't.

Talking of which, I’m surprised no one’s written an Uno musical yet…
