I spent a semester in Ireland in college, about six months after 9/11. Bush had already burned all his international goodwill by then. all my Irish friends were like “oof, sorry about your man,” with a clear distinction between Americans and their leader. I don’t think it will be like that again.

Gently: the rest of the world is fully awakening to the fact that the United States is currently a hostile power.
That isn't new for some, yes. But it is new for many. They may say unkind things and you know, that's just part of how it is right now.

Internationally, I think a lot of people would be very Ding Dong the Witch is Dead if Trump left office prematurely, except that Vance is next in line and we just got a fantastic object lesson in his idea of diplomacy

2016/11: Let’s give him a chance - He may surprise us
2017-2020: Why is he still in office?
2021/02: Why isn’t he in prison?
2024/11: Jesus Christ. You fucking morons.
2025/02: I wouldn’t buy any green bananas if I were him

I'd be more worried about sanctions than sentiments tbh. Maybe naive.
I got a fascinating cultural lesson from my British girlfriend on the difference between someone flying the Union Jack and someone flying the English flag with just the St. George’s cross on it, which has accrued an equivalent values signifier to the red hats here
Being around those who attended Worldcons 2014-2024 disabused me of such Notions.
Most were lovely but Oh Boy, sort of same unfortunately with the English.
toxic misogynist anti-“woke” nerdbro culture of the Sad Puppies / Gamergate ilk fueled these Extremely Online nightmare men
I just pray this is a social contraction and then when it's done we can keep making progress.
We need more empathy than ever.
I just hope ye can hold tight in the mean tone and minimise loss and harm.
Me: I’m American but I hate Trump
