Saw a mention of Phil Fish and it reminded me of that whole era where every indie dev with an Xbox contract talked insane shit about how bad Japanese games are, then their actual game would just be "what if Metroid looked like Earthbound and missed the best aspects of both"
Comments
But equally, people like Fish and Blow are knobheads when it comes to the 'having an opinion'-department
I sure as hell don't.

Just because most of the people making fun of him were chuds doesn't mean Fish wasn't a xenophobic douchebag dipping into the worst of Anti-Japanese attitude in the one era Xbox started out with a lead.
but this idea of 'JP games were BAD and then they became GOOD' is what ppl genuinely believe... when it's just ppl got less racist
That thankfully changed!
or Capcom rushing out Dragons Dogma & DMC4 to make room for 'American games' like DMC: DmC
its why i took his comments as just some random shit talk. but his whole andy kaufman character he played amplified it past that.
meanwhile American TripleA just got less and less appealing. where the focus of gameplay went entirely away.
that seemed to be the snowball effect where everyone just assumed EVERY japanese game was like that
You can also check out SAGA on the gameboy, the first successful GBA RPG, monster evolution party building, and the reason Pokemon got funded.
Got called out hard on Steam, youTube and the chans for instance.
Then some buggers hacked his dropbox and posted his dirty laundry for all to see, lol.
I wonder what he does these days.
Obviously not enough to check though
X-Play especially didn't stop at just games and a lot of the writing was outright xenophobic
A lot of indie devs are still like that.
It's usually something like "what if *beloved game* was ENTIRELY unlike *beloved game* and instead featured my very specific autistic hyperfocus and/or niche fetishes?"
In a humorously dark kinda way that would have been funny if they did
I mean, I'm not a fan of Phil and his dumb, inflamatory attitude, but I found FEZ to be so original and well-made it made me angry first, and then I fell in love with it.
I love the Japanese way of making games, BTW.
The horse upon which all the XBLA indies rode to battle was increadibly high xD
Braid on the other hand was nothing special IMO.
Some dudes were even trying to float bullshit like "boss fights are bad, actually."
Either way, it's a talking point that only really hit the mainstream when dark souls became popular. Suddenly you had people that wanted to talk about the-
Blow Fish
G4: OH LOOK ANOTHER *Gong bang* SAVE THE WORLD *Shamisen plays* GENERIC JRPG THAT WILL HAVE NO IMPACT WHATSOEVER BY THOSE JAUNDICED ORIENTALS!
rather than what we actually got, wide mockery and dismissal from the jump
The Guy Game being "what if Girls Gone Wild made you answer trivia questions to see any boobs, and also it got recalled like a week later because one of the girls turned out to be underage"
Don't you mean "perform unprompted racist comedy bits"?
