it genuinely sucks that basically nothing on the internet works well anymore. search? barely works. social media? filled with garbage engagement-bait designed to game the algorithm. news websites? pages that refresh at random or so covered in video ads that it’s impossible to read stories

Did you try using the advanced search instead?
But yeah the main problem is all the garbage websites out there now.
I'm interested to understand this observation because in general I don't experience it, I (can still) find things reliably, simply.
I'm not disputing it, I'd like to understand the claim/experience though.
Can you provide a few specific examples of failed/difficult searches?
That's why I always ask for specific examples.
My experience is Google is doing a very good job (still).
If you block cookies. history etc I think it hampers the ability to give your searches a personal context.
This will become more so as AI becomes more useful... Agents n all that.
I've not fact-checked the AI stuff, but seems plausible, definately a helpful summary.

What are your best tactics for handling it?
I use copilot (work) and Gemini pro (1yr with my phone). Its nice using 2 because they make different mistakes, which calls out easily overlooked stuff.
even if it still exists I'm sure it's not functional anymore
Side note: starting to use it felt like culture shock. *just* search results?? it was like detoxing away from junk food.
Now that's all the internet is. A giant marketplace of click me ads and analytics of consumer behaviors.
Capitalism, baby!
It's not designed for ease of use, it's designed to generate capital. We are the product AND the labourer.
So someone can take text and convert it to video for their “show” then I can convert it back to text to consume quickly.
It’s a pretty long way to write an article.
It was an intentional choice to increase time spent on the search screen. They made their product worse to make more money.
The only “hit” was a business in Toulouse ffs
It's time for new social media apps to develop for us
1.stop using Google chrome, if you want to block ads, de-google.your browser.
1) monetize every single thing and space
2) creeping featurism
Think in terms of a new hire looking to get a good performance rating or impress the boss. That person needs to find little ways to make more revenue or add a new feature nobody needs. >
Too many 'Burkes' are getting hired in other words?
Side note: he's also right that when the AI hype bubble pops (it's already starting to), it may well destroy tech, and the economy. Fun, fun, fun when the oligarchs own everything...
They make everything worse so you will be exposed to more advertising
(Searches "news")
'You'll never believe what Oolon Skrunk has done now.' (ad)
'Enoch Mumf has done it again.' (ad)
'Liloo Fusk is a great dad.' (ad)
'The world is on fire. Humanity is a failed experiment. (see full story)'
VPN helps as well!
Windows allows you to remove tracking if you dig into the settings/Privacy/Tracking menu.
*There is a browser called ARC, but it has a small learning curve.
This shit is really annoying

Using Brave has significantly upgraded my Internet experience especially on desktop, I try to use my phone less now.
The rise of ai content means piracy is completely ethical!
We can never have nice things.
#CorporateGREED 👿👎🏼
Fuck all of that.

This is the internet.
When you do a search for ABC Company, the Sponsored ($) results & several competitors drown out what you need.
The Internet needs to be scrubbed.
I don’t want Quora or Reddit results either.
That optimism is long gone and I’m not sure it will never be a net positive.

Of course, social media was the biggest mistake of all.
He says, on a social media platform.
I just wanted to give you a laugh.
What I'm expecting with Google's choice to add AI results is terminal decline in traffic from Google search results to the very websites that fed you with quality information
Either way, result is declining quality
Today we’d get a plethora of curated search directories containing misinformation far more than ones with any kind of real facts.
Gemini stops working when you try to have a text conversation with it about how capitalism requires exploitation to function. It ends the chat and gives an error message.

But God forbid one single channel of customer mf service is open to the CUSTOMER of their products
Do give it a watch.
It’s broken.
I believe it was deliberately broken. Google is now a terrible search engine. You can barely find anything.

So, now back to Google, which is a bit better, though probably won't be for long. AI's I guess not completely taken it over, but likely will.
I hope a new non-AI site emerges. Soon.
Then capitalism discovered it.
It sorts articles by bias & factuality.
I just check headlines & read the 5 free articles
Headlines show the spin vs facts which I find useful
try the reader function on your browser
that cuts the madness down a bit
but yeah
its like times square on your screen these days
If I ask "Who starred in 'Deliverance'" and your answer starts with "Moving pictures, or 'movies' are an art form first invented in..." I'm gone.
At a certain level of efficiency the only way a business can increase profits is by extracting extra money from either their workers (by destroying their mental and physical health) or from their customers (by lowering the quality of the product).
Sometimes a sentence says it all and should be placed in a hall of fame somewhere.
We hungry
And getting homeless 😭😭 life is just unfair now
Just bring back good ol' SEO-oriented indexing than whatever algorithms they have.
If you can afford to buy a phone, you can afford a domain.
I haven't seen ads in a browser for 20 years?
But I use an Adblocker and a browser that support it. (Firefox supports adblockers on Android btw).
SEO is a must for businesses hoping to be found online. Period.
However, spammy SEOs are who you have issue with

Some recipes have a button to hop right to the recipe or a print button where you can create a pdf that just shows the recipe. You don't have to print it out, you can just see it on the screen.
is useful here, but even that is slow and buggy
Fkn internet
Is there anything like it in mobile Brave, FF, or similar? (no chrome pls)

And only use site which don't force you to install an app on your device
