Steve, would be v. Interested in your take on reducing pensions tax relief for higher earners as a way of covering the fiscal hole?
I’m asking both in terms of whether it’s the least painful (and most progressive) way of raising the funds and in terms of whether it is what the chancellor will do?
Hi John, I’d be quite surprised if they went for something radical like flat rate relief - very large losses for millions of higher earners including many public sector workers. More likely I suspect are complex changes narrowly focused on biggest pots / tax free lump sums and maybe death benefits.
Although 25/30% flat rate helps lower earners with inadequate savings? Problem with the tax free lump sum is the long gestation period, since no government has removed accrued benefits.
Personally, if I really wanted to use tax relief to boost inadequate (DC) savings pots, I’d be much bolder and switch to £-for-£ matching of the first slice of DC contributions!
Hi mark, haven't abandoned twitter yet, but lib dem paid up member and voter since mid 2010s, thanks for helping us network here, rebuilding networks years old isn't the easiest
Hello! Armchair member (intention to become more active frustrated by need to care for my mother who has Alzheimer's) divided between Bicester and Woodstock and Hexham constituencies.
Much love & respect for you with caring for your mother. My father had Alzheimer’s & that led me to work in Palliative Care. Am so hoping some of Ed Davey’s Social Care plans get approved & implemented as no other Party has
Thank you. My mother has been transferred out of palliative care in recent months as she has survived so long, but I think the logic there is flawed! I of course share your hopes for Ed Davey's social care plans.
I was so pleased listening to him during the GE campaign. For the first time someone was actually saying what WE all know - Social Care needs to be first class & a priority
OK so I'm here now. Delivered or canvassed for Liberals/Lib Dems in every General Election since 1974. In my 6th term as a councillor in Munira Wilson's constituency of Twickenham. These days I often sit on Licencing committees and I chair the Planning committee. Not Tweeted in Musk era.
Very pleased to find a near "official" #LibDem BlueSky list of accounts. Just followed lots! I'm posting here more regularly as X/Twitter has become so toxic. From the heart of Oxfordshire with a great bunch of LibDem MPs and councillors!
Hi Mark - how's it going? Banbury Lib Dems are slowly shuffling to there feet for the President, OK they are not. But @polrobuk.bsky.social is certainly here and doing fine stuff in Cherwell after the locals - remember them.
Thanks for the recommendation Mark. I was looking for an alternate having deactivated Twitter as my small protest against Musk. I will not be having a Tesla either!
Having seen what some people have done here with starter packs of accounts to follow, wondering if it is worth you don't something similar with Lib Dems.
If you don't know what I mean, take a look at @seanjones.org profile under the heading Starter Packs where he has lists of lawyers.
Addendum to the above: signing in from Leeds, newly arrived here from NE Hants Lib Dems to look after mother with developing vascular dementia. So another one hoping that Ed keeps at it with the care plans.

Haven’t left the other place yet but more active on here.
Would be good if Lib Dems and Ed Davey set up BSky accounts.
