part of the growing pains of every community, social media, etc is "what do we do with people who are pretending to be kind, saying the right things, and technically not doing anything wrong right now but are still ontologically evil" and the answer is "stop playing their game and ban them"

to anyone complaining Singal didn’t technically do anything wrong on bluesky yet:
Jesse Singal has a long history of attacking children, pediatricians, & healthcare providers.
Example: He once disappeared from Twitter for a couple weeks after “accidentally” leaking a minor’s medical records.

on the old forums, like something awful, you'd get banned for that shit.
"i'm not TECHNICALLY breaking any rules!"
"then i'm not TECHNICALLY permabanning you. just banning for 1000 years."
Screw “technically not wrong” - the spirit and intent of the rules are broken, kick him to the curb.
The rest of us can and will go by vibes
The antagonists who operate under the stealth of "technically not breaking rules" will destroy your community from within like a poison.

One thing we need is people with experience and knowledge to keep their eye out looking for new people.
And if you're not that person, know who those people are, and trust them when they say, "Here's a bad one, toss them out".
It's a modern parable, for sure.
block it before it starts
"If you get hung up on words, then you're gonna let a lot of evil motherfuckers slip through, because evil people learn the correct terms very quickly. They're the first ones to learn it so they can smuggle their evil shit through"
You don’t keep evil assholes on a platform even if they have good engagement or other “high performance” metrics that are valued by the platform. You ban them because they don’t match the values/spirit of the rules.

“My religion says I need to steal from you” isn’t a clever hack
social media is not a town square.
Turns out intensive purposeful moderation by a human mind is necessary because the assholes are humans and will always skirt “the rules”. Forum mods!
It's not for fascists and bigots. Not ever.
the line against intolerance needs to be heavy and strong and unable to be crossed, IMO
He’d be asking the same “questions” about desegregating schools in the 60s, or gay teachers in the 70s.
"What? I haven't done anything ... yet."

Block him into the Sun, and giggle all the way.
Definitely need more taking the overall pattern of behaviour into account with ppl like him.
I know there was a time I was reluctant to push back IRL against this kind of behavior too.
