I worked in grocery for over ten years and the company stole far more from its own employees (they got sued over it multiple times) than shop lifters ever stole.
My retail experience in school was that the corporate policy of multiple retailers was not to mess with shoplifters. Not worth the risk to employees and customers, not worth the bad PR, not worth the legal hassle, not worth the cost period.
The best part is that the original reason for separating decongestants- meth manufacturing- simply moved on to a synthetic, more potent, pseudoephedrine. So this inconvenience now solely affects normal people.
IME it’s bougie suburban systems — from store management to the cops to the magistrates who handle petty offenses — who will give little Bethynee a pass on her five-fingered skin care discount. In the cities, kid’s gonna be in lockup overnight for a box of tampons.
I think this is where cities stopped using multiple theft predicates to charge felonies which boo hoo why isn't the government ridding me of these poors on year long beefs for $13 in total losses and also why are my taxes so high?
I do think it's funny that in NYC it turned out that a third of all shoplifting cases were the fault of just 327 people, and I kind of wonder whether it would be cheaper to just give those people mental health care or housing or whatever it is they're missing https://www.nytimes.com/2023/04/15/nyregion/shoplifting-arrests-nyc.html
The current wackadoos right winger rhetoric is that California is lawless because XYZ something about shoplifting being a misdemeanor up to a certain dollar amount. Which is most states.
Every socially awkward person's dream is being forced to hunt down the store manager entrusted with the display key, and then feel compelled to engage in a ritual of idle chitchat, just to get a bottle of antacid.

Somehow "the bosses insurance says I should not risk my life for toothpaste" combined with cops "we don't do anything we don't feel like" has magically turned into "lib cities made shoplifting legal" and I just fucking cannot anymore.
As someone who just stepped down from the inventory manager position at Walgreens. They will absolutely blame the workers for any theft that does occur because apparently, I'm supposed to be in every aisle at all hours of the day and also basically be a pharmacy tech. For a grand $17/hour
Meanwhile felon 45 is the most egregious criminal. I'm sure someone stealing a loaf of overpriced bread so he has something to eat deserves a felony. 🙄

you won
Out and whine
I mean, it clearly is going to result in some increased shoplifting, but it’s not like The Purge or whatever.
Plus. He can never see us again, so we’re still winning

The Republican's brain just went into vaporlock. He could not comprehend how I would not snitch if I saw this scenario.
