Adams was already on a path to be wildly unpopular before the corruption charges for pursuing an austerity budget that gutted pre-K and libraries for no good reason, among other things. He failed because he created bad material conditions, but saying that would require MattY to remember things.

it’s not just Yglesias because in some ways I fall into this trap too: there’s a way that “all that matters is the material conditions when the election happens” goes too far where you don’t give proper weight to things like very noteworthy, unpopular corruption
