During my college prof years I had dozens of students on the spectrum. They were fine students and their peers happily engaged with them as equals and friends. RFK Jr.’s comment sheds much light on the darkness of his soul but little on the the experience of people on the spectrum.

I’m not sure he is either. But he does think he’s a genius and there is the (incorrect) assumption that people with Asperger’s are geniuses and therefore took the label as his own before it became part of ASD. He also uses it to blame his weird behavior, which is not part of the diagnostic criteria

I don't doubt Elmo's autism claim for a moment. I've known several high-functioning individuals with Asperger's syndrome, academics for the most part, and Musk behaves very much like they do in normal interpersonal exchanges. 🤨
