New paper out in @ScienceMagazine! In 8 studies (multiple platforms, methods, time periods) we find: misinformation evokes more outrage than trustworthy news, when it does it's shared more + ppl are less likely to read before sharing. w/ @killianmcl1 @Klonick @mollycrockett 🧵👇

Outrage flies, #kindness limps 😥?
When I see someone rebutting misinformation often there is a huge article citing the misinformation before the rebuttal.
I won’t retweet as I’m giving the misinformation more air.🤷♀️
Is there a study about the effect of social-spreading articles people don't read?
I've always said I hate disruptors. They become rich and fuck up every thing for the rest of us.
Falsehood is often well down the rtoad while the truth is still pulling it's boots on!
we can only hope the 2/3 who are “sheep” FEEL THE VICE on their asses post-haste‼️
The old newspaper axiom of "If it bleeds, it leads" exists for a reason and is from William Randolph Hearst in 1890.
The news would punch up and distort facts, but stuck with facts.
Not so, now... 1/2
It's a full machine industry and cannot be refuted, only denied access to your brain if you ask for the source.
Do those get people fired up?
Outrage and fear are great motivators to action, though.
And *engagement on social media* garners headlines on legacy media.
And legacy media uses “people are saying” as a credible source & worthy of wasting air time discussing with interviewees.
And so it goes
And so it goes
The "headline" is the news. Fox News figured that out years ago.
(No offense intended to any chimps who may read this post.)

misinformation is viral.
Not things we’d be angry about as we’ve been trying - things they would.
There’s a “sheen” to everything, staff are given top heavy lighting (with an interesting bounce light too) that makes everyone look younger & more powerful than they are, & the overall sensation is of sensory overload…
There’s some truly diabolical Madison Avenue subliminal shit going on at that network.
I’ve been cranky about this for years, though :)
FOX in the henhouse.
Including disinformation.
The facts don't always fall into place to produce maximal feels
Truth is messy and complicated and takes work

Do you want your news operation to become just an outrage channel? Is that your purpose?
