For #alt-text, “two guys repairing a roof” may work…
Seriously, this deserves a description to inclusively share the tribute to a masterpiece of ad hoc engineering.
Mounting and combining at least six (?) ladders to get to the roof, with one serving as a horizontal stand for the two top ones: art.
That image is not the same as what's going on on that roof though. The distance between the guy hanging off the frame and the pivot point is the same as the distance between the ropes and the pivot point
The guys on the roof are barely past the ridge tile the walkway's sat on, plus the ladder is resting on the gutter above, then the weight on the walkway itself, plus the rope (hopefully) tied secure... It looks awful but is probably pretty secure. The ladder on the roof, on the other hand 👎
Yeah I know, I've replaced slates plenty of times ;)
But these ones would be almost a metre wide 🤣 Don't want to spoil anyone's fun but just worried at the number of people taking this seriously and unable to distinguish a Photoshop job...
Hm I know you can get very large slates... but the size of the guy is tiny compared to the windows, for example. And there are no shadows under them. I call fake!
The architecture gods must give some special dispensation to folks who work on houses like this because this is both insane and kind of, “welp, how else would you do it?”
This. His climbs were scary from a modern point of view because of lack of modern safety gear but they were as safe as they could possibly be in the period.
These are old guys. Well versed in cantilevers, pivots, mass and centres of gravity. The bottom part of the bottom ladder will be tied off, everything else is therefore secure. They know what they’re doing. 👀
It's hard to estimate the pitch on the roof and friction is a powerful force, but yeah, top ladder is not safe even with bloke holding
Less worried about the lower sections, the upper ladder is planted close to the ridge and the long length of the horizontal ladder is tied down to the first upright

I've spent a lot of time playing with rope rescue kit.

We've all done stupid things on ladders down the years, and some of us are still alive, with our limbs and skull intact.
I laughed and laughed, then I zoomed in and laughed even more.
Maybe a cherry picker
Fred died an old man in his bed. He did scary stuff, sometimes mind bogglingly so, but he didn't cut corners.

Health and safety has gone mad 😆
A lot of trust put in the gutters being well fixed which isn't always the case 😳
But the angle makes it even worse.
Zoomed in after your post.
