Most of the ones who immediately came to mind have already been mentioned, but right now I’m reading Caitlín R. Kiernan’s The Tindalos Asset. Assigned male at birth, they identified as a woman in their 20s, but now identify as genderfluid. They write often-beautiful cosmic horror.
Yes I loved Victories Greater than Death and have been meaning to read more by Charlie Jane. I bought All the Birds in the Sky, These Fragile Graces by Charlie Jean Anders, This Fugitive Heart by Izzy Wasserstein and Wrath Goddess Sing by Maya Deane!
I would like to recommend my friend Tara Calaby's novels The Spirit Circle and House of Longing. 😍 She's on here as well but deactivated atm. https://taracalaby.com/
*cracks knuckles* Jessi our social media coordinator (who’s actively recovering from top surgery yesterday on Inauguration Day) was so pumped to see this.
And if I can make a recommendation of my own, if you enjoy (and can handle) some brutal horror, both of Alison Rumfitt's novels are incredible. Tell Me I'm Worthless being the most, uh... relevant.
First thoughts: fun/horror tales from kind-of IKEA by @ninocipri.bsky.social - Finna and Defekt - and Scots SF poetry by Harry Josephine Giles - Deep Wheel Orcadia.
For autobiography, I enjoyed
Jennifer Finney Boylan's She's Not There and Danica Roem's Burn The Page. Danica reads the audio book herself, which is great fun.
Andrew Joseph White is a transgender author who writes different horror-adjacent and spooky books, with gender non-conforming characters, and the covers are sublime
My partner @saranadosfiction.com is serialising his gothic gaslamp fantasy story for free at the moment. It's by a trans masc author and includes trans, queer, & disabled characters (sometimes all at once)! Please do check trigger warnings, tho - it is a gothic!
@mattielubchansky.com's Boys Weekend is SO insightful and SO good a reading experience that it's been my all-purpose recommendation for the past couple years. I even gave my Cool Teen Niece a copy for her birthday (she loved it!)
If you want a darker version of Oz with a subtly transmasc Scarecrow & other trans & queer characters by a transmasc author, have a look at my Needle & Straw series, STRAW SONG and STRAW SOUL: https://graythornpub.com direct, or the 'zon (under KA Silva). Romance, humor, horror, trans identity themes!
Griffin Hansbury’s SOME STRANGE MUSIC DRAWS ME IN was one of the best novels I read last year (great prose, smart storytelling, interesting recent-history setting) and both of Hazel Jane Plante’s books are exceptional, LITTLE BLUE ENCYCLOPEDIA (FOR VIVIAN) and ANY OTHER CITY.
