I’m not superior, I just hate those rental e-bikes. They’re super heavy and unstable and once you get up to speed they take just as much effort to pedal as a proper bike. I always feel unsafe on them.
sure, and point taken, but a protected bike lane also won’t keep you from smashing your skull if you brake wrong and go over the handlebars. i don’t think anyone is arguing that a helmet will make the difference if it’s you vs SUV (at least, i’m not), but it might if it’s you vs pavement.
Dutch studies estimate widespread helmet use could save 100–110 lives and 1,700–1,900 serious injuries annually, mainly in single-bike crashes -- not high-speed car impacts. Safe cycling relies on infrastructure. Helmets help with minor falls, but rarely with car collisions. References: SWOV, RIVM
Yes and you can break your ankle stepping down from a curb, your point is? I think these able bodied adult men are able to ride a bicycle a block for a photo op
Over 100k people ride CitiBike daily most without helmets, and yet they live. Biking is a safe activity except for car drivers
I used this example bc it literally happened to a friend of mine and omg now I see curbs everywhere as the menace they are, just laying in wait to GET US
Because it’s victim blaming nonsense and the kind of thing drivers will aggressively yell at cyclists about as you can see at 0:08 of this video. You’re FAR more likely to sustain a head injury in a car but no one is out there scolding drivers for not wearing plastic hats
Tim, I have been hit by cars more than once on my bike and have crashed into more trees than and creeks than I can even imagine on a mountain bike. Helmets have saved me plenty of times. I don’t need your videos and charts, man. Good grief!
Requiring bike helmets is like requiring onerous voters IDs, erecting barriers in front of people doing the right thing can do more harm than good, cyclists should definitely be more diplomatic about this fact but they're understandably touchy about it https://bsky.app/profile/wvistheduck.bsky.social/post/3ls36ivofqk2y
i even said i would be happy to learn more about why i could be wrong if there was data i didn’t know about (which there apparently is, so, great!) sometimes bluesky is like old twitter in good ways and sometimes it’s like old twitter in the worst ways 🫠🫠🫠
Head injuries are more common when driving, but nobody nags and shames people for not driving in a race helmet
Biking is inherently safe, and the presupposition that it is dangerous, means people are reluctant to bike, and the #1 thing that makes biking safer IS MORE BIKERS ON THE ROAD
See the Oslo study. More bikers = safer biking. And I repeat, most bike crashes in the US with our giant SUVs, will kill you regardless of helmet use. We need safe infrastructure, not finger wagging that is just victim blaming
interesting. this seems to suggest that mandatory helmet laws are the problem, not the actual practice of wearing a helmet. it doesn’t seem like saying “hey, if you have a helmet, it’s still a good idea to wear one!” is the problem here, unless i’m misreading the article.
You're reading it right, mandatory laws are the biggest problem not you, and sorry for the unpleasant response you're getting. From cyclists perspective, we've been victim blamed and harassed about it, like yelling at women for wearing the "wrong clothing" so many are very touchy, unfortunately.
And if you would like a big, long, detailed, wonky read, here's one. Kids should definitely wear helmets and there are laws to that effect. Older people, maybe not a terrible idea either
But the science of bike helmets can be muddy and they can cause neck injuries
thank you! i knew the kid part and had assumed that meant the same thing was true for adults because i had never seen info to the contrary. i appreciate the source!
No one is bringing out a helmet to use a rental E-bike though, they're there as a convenience, but you might only randomly stumble across one, unplanned
You guys are great, and I love it. But I gotta chime in with love and concern: please please wear helmets, every single time. Head injuries are no joke.
Subtle thing I appreciated: was wondering Mamdani was crowding Lander toward the curb, and then realized he’s making space in the oncoming lane for someone coming the other way. Not many politicians would be that aware and conscientious during a photo op!
Y’all give me hope. I don’t even live in New York but I want to say thank you both for entering the race! I think the future is bright for both of you.
Aside from how adorable this cross-endorsement buddy thing is—and it's crazy adorable—I frankly love the idea of candidates going on record as to whom else in the race they like and why. That's info that can tell you a lot about a candidate, IMHO.
NYC should own those btw. It's de facto transportation infrastructure, and should be "City Bike" instead of "CitiBike." We'll over them a fair price, thank them and send them on their way. Those kiosks are popping up outside peoples' houses in residential areas... nah, that should be public.
Do you know that you can’t find a Citi Bike in eastern Queens? That Lime scooters disable themselves if you try to take one east of Flushing Meadows Park? We vote out here in Little Neck! Do you acknowledge we exist. Does any mayoral candidate?
If for some reason neither of you wins, you better run for house or senate. You guys rock. Coumo is sex pest, a thief, and he belongs in Florida with the rest of his republican buddies.

And a buddy video set to Harry Nilsson’s “Best Friend”.
Lovely contrast to all the crap we're enduring.
Good luck to you both!
But apology accepted nonetheless.
No helmet will help if an SUV hits you going 40mph

Still though, hoping one of you takes it (I’ve voted you one and two) and then we can get you on some non pedal assist bikes with proper safety gear!
DSA is a cult. I got out. U can too. Good luck.
Anyway anyone equating the DSA with MAGA is clearly in need of help. I hope you get it. Good luck
