I'm glad they did something. I'm the 60s these protest songs helped us to be strong. I hope Rep Green was encouraged. I was by him, his actions, and the singing!
The 10 Democrats who voted to censure Green are all moderates: Reps. Ami Bera and Jim Costa - Calif
Ed Case - Hawaii
Laura Gillen & Tom Suozz - New York
Jim Himes -Connecticut
Chrissy Houlahan - Pennsylvania
Marcy Kaptur - Ohio
Jared Moskowitz - Florida; Marie Gluesenkamp Perez - Washington state.
Maybe the Democrats should have done something when Al Green got tossed out instead of this meaningless singing. They should have all gotten themselves thrown out. Forced the Republicans to remove an entire party from the chamber and attempt to censure all of them.
What I said was that I want more overt anger and challenge on the part of our electeds, that We Shall Overcome is not that, and it's a shame we don't collectively have widely-known go-to songs reflective of those emotions.
I understand how you got to your interpretation, but that's not what I said.
Don’t recall Margaret Green being censured when she screamed out disgustingly during Obama’s speech. GOP is shameless! Do they have any legislative work to handle? All they appear to focus is petty politics .
Seems they’re content in letting the Loco POTUS usurp their authority.
🙏❤️💕
Nope. @housedemocrats.bsky.social should have walked out with @algreen.house.gov . 200 hundreds interruptions to the king's SOTU would have been overcoming it.
Nah he objectively deserved it, but I'm proud of him. Own it as a party and take pride in it. Tired of the Dem party playing the part of the abused little guy. Go get the voters and make the change you want. Otherwise, stop running for office and let real change makers have their time.
The Democratic Party is broken!🤬
Tell them we “stand up” w/Al! ❤️
Shame on them!!😡

Reps. Case, Costa, and Gillen are not on Bluesky.
right. like they're all talking up a storm online but not actually doing shit. it makes me livid. we elected you to resist fascism and here you are just accepting it.
real question — what do you want them to do? they have no legal/constitutional means or legislative power. all they can do is make noise and attempt to get attention/educate folks on what’s happening. do we want illegal/unconstitutional action?
okay but what does that look like? i don’t hear many - if any - dems negating the fact that we’re in/on the verge of a constitutional crisis. so… what do you want to see them do?
Just curious, as the minority party, what do you expect them to be able to do? Other than leaving with Green during the SOTU. And NOT voting with Republicans to censure him lol.
For me it would be to stop pretending we are not in a constitutional crisis of fidelity that is not going to change. The midterms will not be free & fair.
To go back to their states and help the states fight the nightmare before us before we are in a civil war.
They routinely go after their own & let the GOP members do what they want. The focus is ONLY on the idea they'll be re-elected if they convince people they oppose what's happening. Think back to criticism of Biden's lack of action on multiple policies, too! All talk & manipulation for personal gain.
I legit need to find the article from yesterday that said dems were against this move and match up the 4 names (one of them was Fetterman though, already fuck that guy).
this is ridiculous... republicans aren't following the law. democrats should have gotten up there and ripped donald and jd to shreds. but no we got paper signs
The Democratic Party is broken!🤬
Tell them we “stand up” w/Al! ❤️
Shame on them!!😡
@bera.house.gov @jahimes.bsky.social @houlahan.house.gov @repmarcykaptur.bsky.social @repmoskowitz.bsky.social @gluesenkampperez.house.gov @tomsuozzi.bsky.social
Reps. Case, Costa, and Gillen are not on Bluesky.
The Dems are a failed party. We need to stop thinking of then as an entity. Whatever the new party/gov is going to be called, the leadership will include AOC, Tlaib, Crockett, Omar, Whitehouse, Abrams, and now Green. Governors Walz, Evers, Hochul and Pritzker earned a spot too. The rest gave up.
Ngl, this is not the time for this. They need to go watch tape from biden’s 4 years and execute the plays! Performative actions are not stopping anything and likes on social media are not real wins dang it!!
Yeah, but it keeps up morale in the forced labor camps. Best to know if they can sing as a choir now for when they are all chained together and smashing rocks.
Fucking pathetic. Coopting the Civil Rights movement to validate your milquetoast and spineless response to encroaching fascism is a slap in the face. You're not overcoming shit because you're too weak-willed and disinterested. Sit down and shut up.
Oh, I do. Every last one of them should be primaried in 2026. Primaried, defeated, and exiled. No exceptions. Assuming we're allowed to have an election in 2026, that is. The Democrats may be limited in what they can do politically as they're not the party in power, but that doesn't mean do nothing.
Maybe they could have sang this song and walked out with him two nights ago! I am beyond disgusted at any of these Dem collaborators voting to censure him. The *only* credit I will give these Republicans is they are more cohesive about pocket lint than Dems are about fighting fascism.
But did they censure mtg or any other repub that shouted out at a sotu address, ever? No. Dems need to take note and stop playing nice. Now let me go see how my congressman voted. 🏃🏽♀️
Who is advising Dems of their Pathetic failed actions of resistance. Absolute failure to protect and defend constitution. Cowards @hakeem-jeffries.bsky.social @schumer.senate.gov @whipkclark.bsky.social @pattymurray.bsky.social if USA does not fall, I will only vote for those who took real action.
I’m sure that caused the Republicans to shake in their seats with fear. JFC someone help the Dems fund their balls. This passive shit is getting ZERO results.
Where was that “solidarity” during the joint session? If they wanted to sing they should have done it while marching behind Al Green as he got thrown out.
It’s worse than just “hold hands across America” it’s that but they’re also telling individual members they can run through peoples arms like they’re playing red rover.
Normally I would agree, but this being Al Green and the Black Caucus basically in response to other Democrats as well, and it feels like a "fuck you, we'll do it ourselves" thing
Yeah i can see that too...smh so fucking hard to tell with them. Can't tell if I'm painting their actions with what I WANT them to be as opposed to what they ARE
Really fucking gross that 10 of them would vote for this shit too, just the fucking worst people for the job in this moment. And even worse is that they're just getting in the way of anyone who would be effective by being there
The following Democrats voted to censure Green:
Ami Bera—California
Ed Case—Hawaii
Jim Costa—California
Laura Gillen—New York
Marie Gluesenkamp Perez—Washington
Jim Himes—Connecticut
Chrissy Houlahan—Pennsylvania
Marcy Kaptur—Ohio
Jared Moskowitz—Florida
Tom Suozzi—New York
I normally get this criticism, in this context though this seems like the best way to respond to a censure short of physically battering Republican legislators. That’s a perfectly legitimate thing to ask for, but is it the ask here?
Given the dire situation- which Ds and Rs certainly understand- it just might be. They wouldn’t be the first or last to raise hell in protest. At the least, they’d get wall to wall coverage and let people know it’s time to fight. What are the alternatives at this point?
In this situation I believe nonviolent civil disobedience that forced Johnson to adjourn the house and is making republicans pissed is better than videos of Democrats punching Republicans in the head, even though I would personally enjoy the latter more.
Keep thinking that way as your Dems lead you all in a silence of the lambs walk to the slaughter. Who cares if Rs are mildly annoyed? They’re not changing their ways because Dems sing to them.
What do you have in mind? I get it generally but there was going to be a censure bc republicans wanted one. Short of full on assault idk what options Dems had here. They’re the minority party
Hell yeah. Full on assault. Haven’t you seen the many many examples of fights and smoke bombs and other resistance in other countries fighting? Things are desperate down there - fuck them up. At least you’d get wall to wall coverage and inspire people to rise up.
That made me feel sick to my stomach.. What's their justification? Moskowitz has been questionable for a while but now he's full on gone.. This is really disturbing.
He’s ok but he’s still holding too much to norms and not really conveying the urgency to the American people. So count him oh and Sanders- that’s exactly 5 people in the country
Chanting "Fuck Trump" would have had more impact than a song. Yeah, I get the meaning, but I am also tired of the theatre and I want more Al Greens and less performance theatre from my democrats.
This is corny as hell, we need to stop being so corny. Censure votes are completely meaningless, and everyone having a meltdown over this needs to go touch grass
There's a symbolism to it, though. I get being mad at the censure. I'm far angrier about the continued lack of any tangible pushback from this caucus, or that ten people on the Dem side voted for a fascist-introduced resolution.
Dems should not vote yes on ANYTHING they put forward.
Symbolism is always overrated. Dems have zero levers to push back. They control nothing, and they need to make that clear by withholding votes on things that matter, and downplaying things that don’t (like the censure). We censured MTG last year! It meant nothing!
The GOP gave swing district Dems a chance to show their voters they were “reasonable, non-loony left” Dems *without any real world consequences* and they took it. It would have been malpractice not to.
The real world consequences are that it makes the Democratic party look weak, as if they can’t hold the caucus together even on a symbolic vote. And I doubt anybody back home cares about how they vote in the censure, but I’m willing to be proven wrong. Is this a talking point they use?
And btw the Democratic Party is weak right now and we need to embrace that. Wrap your mind around what being in opposition looks like: we have no ability to stop anything — the entire game now is messaging that everything that happens is Trump’s fault.
Yeah politeness is such a fundamental part of the Democratic establishment. They are the party of not being mean, of togetherness, of being the bigger person, etc. They are fundamentally unfit to meet authoritarianism and it’s honestly surprising this didn’t happen sooner.
It’s tough, because I don’t just want to say they should be more like republicans. But you can’t use civility and decorum against people that simply don’t recognize it, they’ve wiped their ass with the constitution.
Comments
And obviously, auto-tune.
Now get the the overcoming part.
Ed Case - Hawaii
Laura Gillen & Tom Suozz - New York
Jim Himes -Connecticut
Chrissy Houlahan - Pennsylvania
Marcy Kaptur - Ohio
Jared Moskowitz - Florida; Marie Gluesenkamp Perez - Washington state.

Hakem Jefferies should have directed EACH and EVERY democrat to RESIST this censure motion.
But AGAIN, we've demonstrated what a spineless party we are.
🤝👏👏👏✊🫶🏼
But still the usual tepid response from the Dems.
Though only slightly because if you're going to risk your committee posts, anyway, do it at the SotU.
And we still need an anthem for aggressive call-to-action, appropriate for this moment.
Thinking the haka would be cool is cool but the this is lame is just saying you find African American history lame
But it's not the only song. Sometimes we need overt anger and action from our leaders rather than stoic determination.
Especially when ten members of their own caucus refuse to commit to solidarity.
Its not that we lack a cultural answer, its that they are cowards
What Al Green did WAS the American version of the Haka. And they can't stand it.
I will be extremely happy if they back it up with action, but other than a handful of Reps my expectations are... low.
But I suspect I'm not alone in that.
I understand how you got to your interpretation, but that's not what I said.
I hate these pussy-pink wearing bunch of tepid mfers!!
Seems they’re content in letting the Loco POTUS usurp their authority.
🙏❤️💕
F*ck decorum! Fight back, and do it together!!! You’re just showing everyone you guys are weak and disorganized big time!
This party is so cowardly.
Singing a fight/overcome song when obviously they didn't fight to ALL VOTE NO!!🤦♀️
It cuts both ways. The GOP House likely can’t pass a budget without major concessions because they’re incredibly fractured.
Vote them out!!!
There are other political options!
Let them here you!

What next, are they gonna start singing from Les Miserables
the only reps that have a right to be singing that right now are those who walked out with Maxwell Frost the other night.
Start a fight!
10 stabs in the back
When will they learn they have to stick together.
Someone has never watched Casablanca!!!
(plays Le Marseillaise with great gusto)
Now who's defeating fascism? Huh? Huh!
[/Democrat]
Decorum, chanting, wishful thinking, lawsuits, yelling, anger, elections, threats, phone calls, these are making the fascist laugh at you.
You better get ready to fight. You better be ready to fight.
But nothing else works. The media is complicit. The elections are rigged. The courts are captured and corrupt.
So there's only one recourse left and it shouldn't be that controversial. There is literally a Constitutional Amendment about it!
Performative bullshit from their ivory towers
hold hands across America next.
theyre just not the people for the job, period
Wearing pink, voting against their own and singing does nothing to stop fascism
Their silence was enough of an offense. Their inability to unanimously oppose the censure added insult to injury.
But THIS?! It’s about to be my villain origin story. 🤬

Jim Costa—California
Laura Gillen—New York

... TEN of the Democrats voted in FAVOUR of the censure.
failing to back Al Green
when he needed it
during Trump's speeeeechhh🎵
Dems should not vote yes on ANYTHING they put forward.
But in that case, why did 10 Democrats (who?) vote against protesting? If it’s meaningless, why not stand with your party?
And btw the Democratic Party is weak right now and we need to embrace that. Wrap your mind around what being in opposition looks like: we have no ability to stop anything — the entire game now is messaging that everything that happens is Trump’s fault.
