Yeah. Lots of isolated caffeine comes from the decaffeination process of coffee. It can be extracted from other things like tea leaves and such but coffee is #1. It can also be chemically synthesized from theobromine which comes from chocolate, but guess where that's grown too.

This will disrupt the market, retailers will both panic and try to take advantage of the fact you can't do anything about it because you can't really buy American grown coffee. Just like inflation, companies will gouge consumers for profit. Expect retail prices to rise ~50%

I had to verify this (I’m trying to be better at that now) and technically we get more coffee from Brazil (35% vs 27% from Columbia) but still, this could definitely hurt coffee drinkers, especially if he hikes it to 50% as he’s threatened to if they don’t kiss the ring within a week. 😣

Colombia is much tied with Brazil for direct coffee imports as of 2022, per OECD, at 20%. But the effective size is bigger: the Swiss, German, and Canadian imports here must be pass-throughs of coffee grown in warmer places. And Canada's #1 coffee supplier is Colombia.

Most if not all US imports from Switzerland are Nespresso capsules and that's why their share is so high when measured in dollars - value added processed coffee vs. Colombian/Brazilian grains (which, by the way, also supply the Swiss manufacturing plants...)

But the Swiss tax dodge is a paper process and not about where any coffee roasting or other physical transformation takes place. A Swiss company can own coffee that exists in the US and pay a service provider in North Carolina to roast coffee for it which will then be sold to cafes.
