4 has the proper ending, the joke character who shits himself in every game turns out to be a hot guy and he marries meryl and the cutscene is like an hour long
some other stuff happens but that's what's really important
Metal Gear Solid 4 ends it, basically.
Metal Gear Rising kinda sorta continues it, though it's not really carrying the same themes as the original at all. You can basically ignore it.
Revengeance does *kind* of continue the setting.
The whole political angle at the end is what the Patriot AI was warning Raiden about at the end of MGS2, but the overarching messages of nuclear war and deterrence and such aren't as present.
It's more about the PMCs and war profiteering.
The answer is yes. It's very solid in terms of finality. There's holes in the time line like what is Big Boss doing after changing his identity but otherwise the game wraps up in ways that are pretty definitive and keeps in touch with it's life is beautiful theme.
Solid Snakes story ended with the final fight gainst Liquid.
Big Boss' story ended with his last time meeting Solid.
I think Revengence implied that Raiden would forever wage war against war itself (a Sisyphos task).
4 is the ending
Rising epilogue/new begining
PW, GZ are prequels which leads to TPP
TPP is final game (no ending)/ gap to tie mg 1 and 2 with the test of the series.
Yeah, in Metal Gear Survive, a bunch of people from outer heaven are flung far into the future and are facing down a grey goo scenario that they eventually stop. It takes place after the events of the main six games. As for Ac!d, Ac!d 2, and Portable Ops, I'm unsure.
I think so, since MGS4 (or Metal Gear Rising if you wanna get silly) was the furthest in the timeline. Anything else is just prequels and stuff before then.
Yeah but that means the series ends with Snake’s dad showing up and going “here’s a bunch of NEW bullshit to think about” which honestly is the funniest and most fitting ending
Yeah he returned to Brooklyn and killed Peach’s suitors at the end of Mario Odyssey. Pretty sure they’re gonna release a prequel about the Koopa War tho
The series as a whole wrapped up nicely with 4. V is another prequel like 3, but is missing its entire third act, referenced in the art book as MGV: Kingdom of Flies.
if you can believe it, MGSV released in an unfinished state after like 7 years, and even by the "bonus features" of unfinished content it didn't look like it planned to come to any kind of conclusion
Mgs4 is where the whole thing chronologically ends and it's mostly ok in that ties up many threads but mgs5 exists to bridge one more gap and for Kojima to tackle the US war machine one more time
the story of Peacewalker and MGSV is about a man who turned into a hypocrite. He turns into a villain when he utilizes a falsified symbolization of himself to perpetuate a neverending war, the very same behavior that originally caused the riff between Big Boss and Zero.
Metal Gears ending is the modern world that DIDN'T become a nuclear hellscape. The end result is mutual nuclear deterrence with the ultimate fail state being all-out nuclear war.
2 feels super conclusive as it was intended as a conclusion even if it leaves things open to continue. 4 does actually feel final though as does Revengeance for their respective characters.
so mgs4 ties up basically the whole story and mgs5 exists primarily to explain away why killing big boss twice in the early Metal Gear games didnt work lol
As I understand it, pretty much all the major players and plotlines are reasonably wrapped up at the end of 4, except people were mad about that so they basically changed "THE END" to "THE END...?

Which really makes you question how it ever came to this.

5 loops back to prequel territory but is unfinished, so it doesn't even wrap up whatever intra-chronology addition to the story it was doing.
So... Yes?

Rising serves to give what characters were left an ending even if they could keep doing stuff.

Been so long since I played MGS2/4.

All the while he has shifted to another laborious quagmire in his Death Strandings
Is there such a thing a madness in the weird cinephile
We don’t talk about Metal Gear Survive.
On the other hand Metal Gear Rising is set after it for some reason and does entirely its own thing
And on the other other hand MGSV is the one that released last and barely has an ending at all
My aged PC port has keybosrd controls. No, not mouse and keyboard. Keyboard.
I beat it twice, somehow.
The other games have just been prequels expanding on Big Boss, the origin of Outer Heaven and why he wasn't the bad guy.
Admittedly, Big Boss is a far more engaging protagonist than Solid Snake.
Was amazed at the time admittedly.
