As someone who does both, the crime is not just the texturing - the overall base model shapes feel wrong. It doesn't have the same harmonious flow and rythm as the 2D does, there's a stiffness to it even before rigging/blendshapes & does not capture the distinctive squish/weight effectively.
See, this is why this trend is dying. It's designs like this that makes animation more appealing than live action. You can get away with creepy and weird looking creatures in a 2D or 3D landscape but it just looks so damn uncomfortably uncanny in a realistic setting.
They also kept their weird shapes, they made it "realistic" in a sense there's more details, the scales are more visible, but they still have the cartoonish exaggeration of the original works.
Which toothless being made like the dragon in GoT would just be weird...
i am just picturing, that the director was over the shoulder of the sculptor as it selected the the pore texture brush and just yelling -MOOOOORE- as it cracked a whip
I saw one poster of stitch and my first thought was "He looks like a lice infested stray" and while he might be exactly that, I feel the designs could have been just a slight bit more pleasant to look at.
technically it's ILM, and not Disney.... and ILM did do the transformers films, and even at their best, those films just looked obnoxious.
If anything Nani was always 19 in the original film, we imagine her as Tia Carrere. There's young people asking her to have fun but she's trying to find work.
but yeah, David Osden Stiers voices for Disney.... he deserves better.
DANGIT! This film is so special to all of us. I want to just skip over to the part it's past us.
btw, you know who did the concept art on Pirate films... the guy who designed the TRex Jurassic Park. A design so good, changed entire generation's idea how the the dino looked.
And the director did Mouse Hunt, that's an underrated gem.
But ILM does have a couple stinkers
This is just nightmare fuel, not cute and playful at all. Some things should be left as they are. Hence I refuse to watch any of these remakes. The magic is just gone...
This kinda personally sucks (and isn’t anyone else’s problem, don’t worry) because his human disguise reminded me of my Italian grandfather and it was so endearing :’(
In fairness, I almost believe if it had been in star wars style puppeteering with practical effects, it could have been more charming than this. Almost.
It looks like someone took Harold from accounting and put him through an ai generator that failed to combine him with a koala...
I can understand how hard it would be to kinda form a realistic looking version of Jamba or Pleakley... At that point just make it look like them from the original...
Yeah that's an egregious kind of violence right there. I'm feeling like I want to punch live action Jumba which I don't think is the reaction they're hoping for
Honestly glad, I’m sticking to royalty-free Mickey Mouse. I prefer the Old Mickey Mouse by Ub and Walt. Paul Rudish in the modern times too to stick it occasionally for free on the ‘Tube. I love Disney the brand but the corporation is questionable. And wouldn’t go far to demonize a mouse.
Yeah… I was never under the impression that all of that darker purple coloring on Jumba was hair. I thought it was just part of his skin tone. I don’t know why they went this route with him at all. The two hairs on top of his head like the 2D version would have been fine.
I mean if they watched the animated series there's an entire episode dedicated to him actually getting hair (a fro if I remember) but these things never actually check the other detials of a series or care all that much
My favorite animated film and its legacy being raped by corporate greed to the tune of millons across the world clapping their hands because they had nothing better to do than to buy tickets to it or watch it one of their dozens of streaming services. I cant exaggerate how hopeless I feel.
Specifically, the right is symbolic of an attack on artist rights, no? It's not just a kind of violence. It's literally violence against union artists?
They've completely lost the charm of the original animation with these eldritch-horror CGI facsimiles. They should have looked at Detective Pikachu if they wanted to do this right.
Disney Execs: "No, you can't have cute, charming, whimsical things in movies because cute, charming, whimsical things don't exist in real life. Everything in the real world is horrible and ugly and terrifies me— I mean, children!"
Man, i sculpt cartoon characters for fun and there are deffinitely just LIMITS on what should EVER be done to them. This is why no one is clamouring for some 3d Roger Rabbit remake.
I kinda feel bad for whoever got dragged into this.
I feel that them trying to commit to the original designs whilst trying to make them fit in live action caused the aliens and humans to look like they aren’t from the same film at all 😕
Jumba doesn't look that much different from the original movie version, aside from his very phallic nose. Seriously, did the designers not catch that at all or was this kept in as a joke?
Early 00s horror was graded that way because the CGI was bad enough to take you out of the film, and they had the decency to not ask for $300m budgets and a monopoly on culture
I can't imagine what Chris Sanders thinks. I always loved his style, and it made for a charming, stylistically different Disney movie only to be turned into this 🫠
Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois both understand that the companies are going to do these no matter what, and the originals are what will endure anyway, so you might as well get paid.
Of course that could be millennial parents either softening a wound from the 3D version or trying to show up their kids with a better version... The only appropriate 'back in my day' 😆 2/2
It really reminds me of those slop articles that are like "Family Guy characters but in real life!" and it's just bad, uncanny valley images pushed out from the generated images machine

He was beautiful and carefree and they murdered him.
The second one...

Toons made realistic are nightmare that needs to stop
AND pleakley isn't wearing drag either!!!!!
It‘s always problematic to convert a 2D drawing to 3D photorealistic.
But this character was FUBAR.
People irl keep asking me if I'm excited about the new Stitch and I'm like????? No????

"Live-action" Jumba Jookiba: Best kept away from children.
...also, that nose?
LIVE ACTION JUMBA CAN'T HURT US 😭

How are kids not gonna be terrified?? Disney out here making scarier movies than Blumhouse
Removed the like
Only antagonist from the film?
I mean I guess I'm not the target audience but oof!
-Dr. Jumba Jookiba
The American remake was an abomination unto the Lord.
just stop
>she looks confused, says "It's a good alien, sir"
>it's wet
The light is super flattering on this one image
It's not going super well.
not as alien as i thought he should be MORE LEATHER
no hair or fur in my personal opinion
I kinda feel bad for whoever got dragged into this.

...There they are, officer. The creeps are the ones with their hands raised.
time to summon the meteors
L&S is getting shafted the hardest out all classics

I'm assuming the nose is just a tribute to whatever dickhead made those changes
JUMBA IS MY FAVORITE NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
I hope MAYBE in like actual movie the'd look better and thats just a shit angle but maybe im just coping
If he's opposed, he's doing it -quietly-
Yeah, not seeing a lot of opposition here :/
My only hope is that the movie will circle attention back to the original. For ex. after TLK/Mufasa movies, the 2D had rise in viewership. 1/
......wait it's what?
