Two separate resurrection attempts for a beloved character failed. I use Matt Mercer's resurrection rules, and both the revivify and resurrection ritual got natural 1s.
The dice have been BRUTAL to my players this campaign.

This campaign has been absolutely brutal.
We've had two resurrection attempts. Needed to roll a 3 each time to succeed. Rolled a Nat1 both times.

Goodberry, along with create water, food, or any other miracle something out of nothing has an easy fix.
Dark sun defiler rules. Yes, it's free. Also, the gods and nature now hate you.
GG.
not that it isn’t bad, but nat1s conceptually are evocative of life’s general propensity for things to go sideways
if you’re going to get smote by something with less than a 1% chance of happening, fairly described as ‘catastrophically low odds,’ “tabletop rpg” is a pretty decent place for that ‘catastrophe’ to unfold, all things tolled
They’re back, but only for a year.
They’re back, but their iconic magic items had to be sacrificed to fuel their return.
They’re back, but, having voluntarily left their god’s afterlife, they can no longer be a cleric.
I would suggest something more manageable, like needing a deal with some sort of entity, being stalked by agents of death, giving disadvantage on future death st, or rolling on a madness table
I don’t like the idea of madness tables, but there’s options for weirder things:
They can’t hear music, or see by star/moonlight.
Roll with the punches and enjoy it!
But damn if it doesn't suck sometimes!
(Low rolls are good, you want to roll 3d6 and get a 3)
We're rolling with the punches, but the punches ain't stopping.
Get metal dice, save a life!
Just thinking of out of the box solutions to the issue here.
The horse is already dead. Why beat it?
If your players want a dead, eternally destroyed, soul riven, heaven forbidden from ever returning...
Give them a way. That's your job.
Last campaign I played, tried to sneak past a huge band of armed goblins, had advantage and everything.
Double 1’s.
I got exploded.
11/10 would do again tho
You want to be G-d? Then BE G-d.
Write your own rules. Post them to GM Binder. Share the love.
I give players agency. Need a reroll? Np!
One madness/curse coming right up. 😇
The dice just don't want us to bring him back.
give a quest to then free the trapped spirit of the character after the party realizes what happened
you could go the "i was in heaven!" route ala Buffy
you can do unintended consequences
1s are an opportunity for the storyteller to wreak havoc when success would be good for story
