I feel like we've heard more than enough from the "got served coffee by a trans barista today and the fact that everyone in the shop acted like this was normal shows that 'the left' is why Democrats keep losing" variety of pundit.

I know a trans person. Ive known them since before and now. We’re not great friends but we’re neighborly friendly. They basically are just good people. Just living their life, minding their own business.
Expecting others to exhibit such basic human decency is interpreted as an act of elite snobbery by these pundits who feel nothing but elite disdain for their fellow humans who have the gall to be critical of bigotry and injustice.
Who tf is paying that much attention?? I can't remember the last time I even had an interaction with a service worker that went beyond "can I have XYZ? Ok thanks bye"
The reactionary feeling of disgust that makes such pundits want to just make trans people disappear is a genealogical descendant of the same sense of bigoted disgust that used to be aimed at same sex couples, the same sense of disgust white people commonly felt when seeing interracial couples.
The sense of disgust (for same sex couples if not interracial) is something that could actually come back. This is incredibly sad.
The fact that we grew beyond that in the 1st place was amazing. I'm likely only slightly older than you so you understand. That we could go back to it is disheartening.
Not everybody who feels such disgust when they encounter people who are different from them is a genocidal fascist, but genocidally fascist political movements always seek to validate and amplify such feelings of reactionary disgust.
Look, we can either be a country where more people feel at least some degree of shame for publicly acting out and expressing their bigotries, or a country where such bigotry is normalized, totally accepted, and even celebrated. What kind of asshole wants to midwife into existence the 2nd option?
It's good that cultural mechanisms have been in place that create the conditions for this woman's kid to stop using the "r-word." It's really not that big of an ask. Hardly oppressive. The US right has been built upon the idea that such progress is ackshually tyranny. https://bsky.app/profile/atrupar.com/post/3lb3bgsjxhs2h
I think most people can understand that the same word pronounced differently can mean different things, and just because they’re spelled the same way doesn’t make the slur version acceptable.
Did she even consider that she might be wrong? Does she have a single memory of being a high schooler and having a parent who was embarrassingly out of touch with modern culture on something?
Humanity is becoming authentic in its expression of who we are on the inside and are showing it to the world. This works in so many ways. The truly awful people with hate, power over & self loathing are expressing themselves out loud just as atheist (me), LGBTQ, and others reveal themselves too.
All drawn from disapproval furiously manufactured into existential threat.
Saw some of this a decade ago when someone tried to make a roundabout case that a gay pride parade was a threat to their safety. Such was their discomfort that they needed it to be criminalized.
I get the discomfort with trans people. Have felt it myself. But one quickly realizes that - get this - they're *just* *people*. Seeing others go out of their way to give them shit was eye-opening - like, middle school was a long time ago, man.
And at some point one should reach a level of maturity where that disapproval-without-harm reflex is toned way down as part of understanding the real limits of one's spheres of control and influence.
not my area of expertise, but the anti-trans bigotry also makes me think of anti-Semitism in 1930s Germany, in part because each group is dehumanized in the ways you suggest for trans people and also because each group is/was a small minority in their respective country
I was socialized to think like that in the 1980s in the conservative town I grew up in. Letting go of such bigoted socialization is not that hard once one is introduced to alternative ways of being and thinking...but people who normalize/naturalize bigotry make such change less likely to happen.
It really is remarkable how much people can change when they are allowed to. Growing up in the 80s and 90s, I remember feeling a little weirded out by two guys holding hands, and super weirded out by two guys kissing. I don't anymore. Because my prejudices weren't reinforced by assholes.
For sure...polls show that such feelings have become less widespread, especially amongst younger folks...but such shifts in public opinion are never irreversible or fully complete.
Yes, it definitely seems to be the 2020's version of "The Oncoming Storm" of Gay Marriage that the GOP used 20 years ago. And they certainly seemed intent on indoctrinating kids back to '50s values, which would reverse a lot of the scorn we now have for those dumb Bush-era commercials.
Yes. And it's consistent with @karenstenner.bsky.social's research, which shows that people with authoritarian personalities have especially finely-tuned disgust-o-meters.
There’s a branch of McDonald’s in Waikiki almost entirely staffed by transgendered or cross-dressing people. Sometimes one will wear makeup, other times not; it’s no big deal.
So are these people making scenes? Or are they too just acting like it’s normal? So then, it’s not Democrats, it’s civility. Why must these people be so exhausting??
There's also a pretty decent chance that they're actually transvestigating cis people, because the sort of person who writes that kind of piece thinks they see trans people everywhere and that every tall woman and short man is trans
I suspect that is STILL too much credit for those assholes... they spent years writing fan fiction about hipsters in coffee shops and you KNOW they just cut and paste in the anti-trans shit instead. Same with their anti-vax powerpoints.
True. Though by the number of times conservatives on social media have incorrectly thought that I'm a trans woman because I've got a thick neck, I'm not convinced that all of the real world supposed clocking is made up.

Normies: So? The naked skin of truth may be uncomfortable & revealing. But isn't just skin deep & equality lies deeper.
Political strategists: The emperor has no clothes!
Media: Is it wrong for MAGA to equate trans with porn?

[staggers towards the fainting couch]
one suspects they hate their own lives and resent joy wherever they see it
