Jim Davis thinks we’re all stupid. Garfield first appeared in 1978. The normal lifespan of a cat is 13-20 years. He’s replaced Garfield, probably multiple times.

No, the numbers are fine… cats have 9 lives, so you have to multiply the average lifespan by the number of lives. That comes out to 117-180 years for a cat. Garfield isn’t even middle-aged. He’s adolescent-to-young adult.
Garfield is immortal, he has to be, there’s no way a cat could consume that quantity of italian food and survive, nor be that old and survive.
Yet.
He does it.
There’s a digital pet store down the street where he has a whole hard drive of Garfields lining the metaphorical walls like Necromongers being conditioned, waiting for release and orders
True fact: Jim Davis got an honorary degree from Purdue in the same day I graduated. I wrote a 300 page thesis on solid state inorganic chemistry. He wrote a cartoon about a fat cat that ate lasagna. We got equivalent degrees. FML
Garfield's creator Jim Davis named his famous fictional feline after his grandfather, James A. Garfield Davis, who was named after James Abram Garfield, the 20th President of the United States.
All those comics were drawn between 1978-1983 & have been held in reserve. You may have noticed a lot of references to the Iranian Revolution in recent strips.
On his deathbed Jim Davis will reveal his magnum opus, a heart breaking 9 strip series depicting the loss of each of Garfield's nine lives in harrowing detail.
Medically speaking, Garfield is a cartoon. “Cartoon” originates from the Latin “Khartoum” which was the name of Jack Woltz’ horse in The Godfather, whose head was replaced with an actual dead horse’s head in the movie. Coincidence? I’m just asking questions
The actual explanation is that Garfield is an immortal time-traveling elder demigod who merely appears in the guise of a cat so that the human brain will be capable of comprehending its form.
Knowing the cat’s appearance has changed quite a bit since the first strip ran, I think that Jim Davis is well aware that the readers of the Garfield strip are well aware.
Between drawing sessions he keeps it in a box. Spending so much time possibly or possibly not alive has extended its longevity. A whole new area of research has been borne studying the interface of philosophy, science and cartooning. Garfield approves as long as there is lasagne.
I have a Garfield decoration on my Christmas tree. How do I know it is the correct Garfield if Garfield has repeatedly been replaced? I can't have fakes on my tree. My tree must have integrity.
This is like those people you knew growing up who would just replace their beloved family pet with the same breed after it died and just name it the same name and act like it’s the exact same animal to avoid the reality of pain and loss for decades on end. Psychotic behavior.
This is why I think all the "adult sexy Wednesday Addams" things are silly. Wednesday Addams was a child in the 1960s. She'd be in her late 60s right now!!
Cue a Garfield feature called "Garfield's Nine Lives" and it shows the 8 times the cat died and was replaced with a new asshole tabby. Then when he's suddenly hit by a car, we smash to credits. Yes, "we."
Are we ignoring the 9 lives of cats? When they begin their next life, are they starting from the dying moment of the last life, or are they "re-born" at a younger age? This could be a possible explanation what is seemingly agelessness of Garfield. Otherwise, yeah, Davis has been bullshitting us all!
