My wife is a massive weeb, and for Christmas, we wanna finally break the glass seal
we want to try a magical girl anime
Where should we start? Bonus points if the show isn’t super long and/or does something interesting with the formula from the start.

Either way I think it's a must watch for weebs and non-weebs.
Tokyo Mew Mew (dubbed as Mew Mew Power! in the US) moves a bit faster and is also quite good
* Princess Tutu
* Puella Magi Madoka Magica
* Cardcaptor Sakura (40+ Episodes)
* Magic Knight Rayearth (40+ Episodes)
Or Cardcaptor Sakura for a magical girl show that isn't team-based, but instead focused on a single girl.”
Does Digimon Frontier count as a magical girl anime?
I'd recommend Pretty Cure
24 episodes + an extremely necessary prequel ova
Magical girl is shipped off to Lockhead Martin prep by her mysterious masked murder mom. She's immediately thrown into a situationship with a Haliburton princess and fights for sapphic love in her Gundam.
Friendship, romance, religious themes and thievery.
Great mix and my personal favorite.
I would avoid Madoka, just for the fact that it is more of a genre breaker than and genre definer.
But it is really awesome and should been seen at some point.
It also is kind of meta and takes shots at the industry.
It's great
And it’s so good man.
Pretty Cure
Magic Knight Rayearth
Also echoing NO on Madoka as the introduction.
Failing that, Heartcatch Precure is my fave Precure
Third option: Card Captor Sakura, just an iconic classic.
Don't start with Madoka Mágica. That's like watching superhéroes for the first times with The Boys.
1. Magic Knights Rayearth
2. Fruits Basket
3. Rose of Versailles
Sailor Moon and Princess Tutu. Do NOT start with Madoka that's for later!!!!
Thanks so much for your recommendations, y’all!
Little Witch Academia is technically in the genre and is a short, and it’s fun and feelsy.
Kill la Kill? It gets very shounen though.
But other ones are
- Sailormoon
- Cardcaptor Sakura
- Revolutionary Girl Utena
- Magic Knight Rayearth
- Little Witch Academia
Find Oh! My Goddess.
... sorry, i may have taken you too srsly
I highly recommend Puella Magi Madoka Magica, but not as your first one. Watch at least a season or two of Sailor Moon or some other recommendation first
I'm gonna say Symphogear. I feel it will somehow appeal directly to you.
That should not be anybody's first magical girl anime. TRUST ME
(But also I super love this show, have for 25 years)
I'd certainly suggest Jubei-Chan over Magica Madoka, hoooooly shiiiiiiiiiit

(I did like Madoka but it's not really a good first one and it's evangelical fans are so loud)
On the opposite spectrum of that: Bludgeoning Angel Dokuro-chan. Also one to watch after one or two others, but you can get through it in a day.
-Tokyo Mew Mew
-Madoka Magica
-Magical DoReMi
Italian Magical Girl Shows:
-W.I.T.C.H.
-Winx Club
-Angel’s Friends
Other Similar Shows:
-Kaleido Star
-Boueibu
-Miraculous
Obligatory "AMV that convinces people to watch Princess Tutu":
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9197GTl1ASg
I think there’s just one season and some movies, but that one season stands on its own really well
-Princess Tutu is perfect for the winter season, 25 episodes, huge emphasis on ballet (draws inspo from several deep cut ballet stories & productions), & does some pretty neat narrative stuff about it having stories within the story

Acro Trip is only twelve episodes and is tons of silly fun, and Magilumiere is ongoing about magical girls as a business.
and Utena is fantastic and mindblowing but probably demonic to spring on someone without the genre knowledge (and trigger warnings)
