tbf it didn’t quite go like this the 1st time, but i’ve been really pleased to see progressive candidates cross endorsing and building power. it’s smart!
I also think the moment has helped- E. Adams, Cuomo, facism- it all makes it more urgent to actually get. shit. done.
rcv could make the primaries not so hard of a decision (but not Instant runoff -RCV but a special weird system as being proposed here in CT unless we could enact a national primary election)
The CT proposal transfers votes if a candidate drops out, though like all primaries how the voting will actually be turned into results will have to be determined by the Democratic Party itself
If this were a FPTP race, this shit would have gotten extremely bitter weeks ago unless Lander dropped out and endorsed Mamdani. Under RCV, this sort of thing isn't necessary, so ideologically aligned campaigns can maintain cordiality.
This is probably why reactionary centrists hate it so much.
Speaking as a reactionary centrist, I don't hate it. I do think it's weird to have it in the primary instead of the general, especially with the incumbent competing there, along with possibly the top two finishers in the primary as well.
I would guess some centrists dislike instant-runoff because it's bad for compromise-type candidates who are broadly acceptable to most voters but few voters' favorite. (They tend to get eliminated early, even if they could have beaten any other candidate in the final round if they'd made it there.)
kind of want it in my city. we've got a similar situation of 4 dems running for mayor: 3 with progressive creds, 1 who is a former republican businessman
If we had RCV, it would be a matter of which of the 3 were most popular, but because we have FPTP, there's a risk the former republican will win
Well if a block of candidates come at me that way, I'd eschew them all pretty quickly.
I'll be making my own choices tyvm. The best thing about rcv is that the #fuckingDNC can't force our hands
NOTE: the DNC is STILL less popular than GOP bcuz of 💩 like this
Theyre on the take & they force 💩 on us
This is where I like Alaskan style RCV, where the primary is “first 4 or 5 past the post” and then the general is RCV among those that remain. Makes balloting easier and means less concern over exhausted votes for minor candidates that had no shot from the beginning
The problem I see for NYC is that a not insignificant number of voters will rank 3-5 non-Cuomo, left-leaning candidates but not Mamdani and so essentially throw the election Cuomo as a result
It reminds me of how in the early constitution the parties had intricate processes for getting their guys elected both President and VP, and they fucked it up both times they tried it
Yet @democrats.org refuse to promote ranked choice voting because Raskin & Khanna are too radical? Why make a better democracy when you can take crypto billionaire money.
Instead of ending up with center-left & radicals winning, we get told to toxically unify behind loser Chuckie🏳️🫏.
I mean, it was notable that Warren didn't drop out in a bid to help Bernie against Biden in the understanding that her voters were more marginally likely to support Bernie than the rest.
Why would she have done that? And why would her voters have been more likely to support Sanders? You really don't understand how much scorched earth Sanders created in 2016, do you?
This ignores the polling. The majority of Warren’s supporters had Biden as their 2nd choice. Her dropping out would have been a net negative for Bernie, and “the left”
On the other hand, the majority of Bernie’s supporters had Warren as their #2…
To be clear: I was comparing voteshare for Bernie among Warren supporters compared to the other candidates who dropped out and endorsed Biden. Basically Bernie would benefit more from her dropping out than the others, but his ideal situation is everyone stays in too long like Republican race 2016.
...of course, I'd argue the sort of deal making needed to get a negotiated drop out is far more telling of the political acumen needed by a head of state than most of the stuff voters use to weigh the candidates.
I am sorry to report that San Francisco voting is RCV and its politics still the most ridiculously petty Mean Girls bullshit imaginable. The reason Lander and Mamdani's fan bases aren't at each others' throats is that we're fucking adults here
I want it so bad I honestly can't imagine what it would be like. Instead my city's mayor switched parties and is now a Republican and my Governor's idea of border security is floating buzzsaws help me I am in hell.
And the fact that they're not is a good thing -- not for progressives, but for society!
The purpose of elections is not for us to hate each other. The purpose is for us to determine who will hold important positions. Consensus-building is good where possible.
Likewise for Mamdani's second cross-endorsement, with Blake.
(Adrienne Adams turned him down. Then when Mamdani announced the Lander cross-endorsement, Al Sharpton, *perhaps* not knowing that, threw a fit, claiming blacks were getting left out. Which looks even sillier after Blake joined the bloc.)
Well, she's the one who drove through outdoor-dining regulations with requirements stiff enough to basically kill it off in the outer boroughs. A result that was widely expected -- except by Adams herself, who now claims to be shocked and disappointed.

I think a decent amount of press opposition is really this dumb

And I say this who felt personally attacked and insulted by Bernie supporters. That and his bad staffing was a death knell for me.

You can say it hurt Bernie less than other people dropping out. But it was a net negative for him VS Biden

Not the best at thinking things through.
