A healthcare CEO whose dream was to deny benefits to paying customers to increase shareholder profit - the list of suspects could be hard to fit onto a laptop
Dark schadenfreude, indeed. Tells you how angry people are about our fails-everyone health system. Sorry it makes you unhappy. You can mute/block if you don't want to see some of the angrier folks. Take care of you.
the book (4 novellas) is excellent. It also includes Unauthorized Bread (DRM on toasters and how DRM can be used to crush people), Model Minority (what happens when Superman interferes in a George Floyd situation and finds out what the American Way truly is) and Masque of the Red Death (preppers)
What?! There still in business aren't they. Why not try and get some business at the wake. Issuing a statement saying 'The safety of our employees is our highest priority' wouod be themother option.
Even terrible people do not deserve cold blooded murders. This is coming from someone who works *in medical billing, and who really really hates this company.* Assassinations are not cool!
The attitude towards this is the eventual outcome of letting hundreds of thousands of people die so he could have billions, I don’t blame anyone for not feeling empathy for this man.
Not feeling empathy, sure, that's one thing. I am not sad. But we cannot celebrate the murders of people we don't like. This should not be a difficult concept unless this country is full of tens of millions of sociopaths.
Do you think this murder is going to change anything? Yeah I'm sure UHC is going to have a meeting tomorrow where they day "well gosh, we ought to just eliminate deductibles and prior authorizations now." Please.
Actually, it usually takes drastic action to change entrenched unfair WRONG policies. I mean, I can see why *you* don't want it to change, this is how you make your living. You'd probably welcome a raise and promotion into upper management, right? The rest of us have a VERY different feelings.
A friend of mine who died at 28 spent countless hours out of every day of the last years of her life fighting with her health insurance company over treatment for her brain cancer. Anyone who has watched a loved one go through this thinks this CEO got off easy
The government of Tennessee literally bombed, from airplanes, striking coal workers. Virginia sheriffs hired Pinkertons to act as armed soldiers against strikers and murdered them.
This is a silly argument unless you're advocating for the murders of, I dunno, like every government employee as well or something. Devil's advocate is a dangerous game that I'm not interested in playing.
Insurance executives that find ways to deny payment and contribute to medical bankruptcy and people dying of preventable diseases are not even close to government employees.
Personally I'm against killing as a form of justice, legal or extralegal, because it has a high rate of killing marginalized people (many of them innocent), a low rate of killing people who use systemic power systems to hurt/kill people, and very rarely improves material conditions in society.
I'm not losing sleep over this guy because he has a lot of blood on his hands & the entire ruling class certainly needs a wake-up call that there are consequences to their actions, but the idea that it's effective is mainly a power fantasy. Making civil systems work has more staying power long term.
It absolutely is. Unions and government regulation were a peace deal and they've forgotten that. Those laws and contracts were written in blood. Quite a lot of it.
I agree that it won't make anything better so my only hope is that it would stop other executives from doing something worse for their customers b/c this could be the consequence for them. There should be no such thing as for-profit healthcare.
that dude getting evaporated doesn't materially change anything, the vice-CEO is gonna step up and do the exact same thing his predecessor did. killing that actually prevents the suffering of others has a place, but this wasn't that
If you consider that there is a base value for a human life, and then consider that this person has caused the deaths of many human lives which EACH have an equal value to his own, then he's pretty much a negative value. Screw him.
I’m sure he had his “ let them eat cake moment” when he helped deny people healthcare. I don’t feel bad and I’m surprised it doesn’t happen more often.
Even for them, a spectacular but precise and independent global trial and televised execution would have been much, much better. Perhaps might have even dissuaded future dictator-ey aspirants in future years. 🤷♀️
I wouldn't say he deserved it but his actions didn't prevent this. At least try to live your life in a way that someone out there doesn't want to kill you because of your actions. I can definitely say that the UHC CEO did not do that.
I'm gonna have to disagree with you completely on that statement. I think terrible people actually deserve it. That's the wages of being a terrible person. The rest of the community doesn't want you alive. Then when it happens, well, Let's just say I really don't expect the shooter to get caught.
Put a 📌 in this idea.
Crooked insurance CEO hires assassin to shoot him so family can claim insurance money. All because he was about to be caught in some huge scandal that involved $Millions.
They always do that. Journalists mercilessly harassed the Parkland Shooting victim's parents for years for comment. Even the ones who were ostensibly on their side.
Anyone else’s spidey senses (or whatever this affliction is) buzzing like mad at Mrs Thompson offering a direction for the inquiry into her husband’s shocking and awful murder at a time 99.9% of next of kin are either too devastated to say anything or just offer something generic??
I can’t imagine how desperate someone must be to wait in the street to kill the CEO of a Health Care company, presumably for not covering expensive medical bills or providing cover? Knowing they will be caught eventually and incarcerated for life. The American HC system really is badly fucked up.
I got used to that working as a business reporter, but always found it really weird. When I asked for it to be removed in such situations, editors just told me “that’s the style,” rather than relying on their own editorial and human judgment, because that’s how they do.
Totally. Remember all their crying during the Obama terms WHILE they were flush with free taxpayer bailout $ AND borrowing like crazy because of near-0% bank-to-bank interest? Well I fuckin do
Any political party could have organized and done something about it at any time. They didn't, and Citizens United put the final nail in the coffin of this country's version of representative democracy.
Me, the owner of a fortune 500 company, calling up Italian hitmen to kill the CEO and directors of another fortune 500 company I just invested 9 figures into
CEO Bagel continued on his course today of moldying leadership as shareholders called for his ouster by Salmone Loxx, despite continued increases in the market valuation of Breakfust Insurance.
Just saw an article that the shell casing at the scene had the words "deny" "defend" "depose" on them. Combined with the fact that United is now relying on artificial intelligence to decide the validity of a claim, I'm gonna go out on a limb & say it was someone who got fucked by them. Just a theory
Same article I got on my PC home page. Faux must have heard it to. They found a way to link to immigrant crime. Because...of course. There's never been any crime in NYC before those 58K immigrants hit the streets. 🤣
I wouldn't discount someone trying to make it look that way while being a hired hit. He was in a group of execs being investigated for insider trading.
Is it just me or is it likely to assume this assassin is someone who had a family member that was denied coverage for a life saving procedure by this large profitable insurance corp?
I’m shocked and saddened too but I do have to say that UHC deductibles are fucking ridiculous and have caused me siginificant financial stress this calendar year. Not worth violence against another human being, especially not murder, but why is the out-of-pocket cost for two people almost $13k?
I had UHC at my job awhile back, maybe 10 years ago. They were by far the worst healthcare company I ever had to deal with. You had to fight with them over everything including simple things like doctor referrals from your primary care doctor.
I had to get biometric screenings done to get the best rate for UHC at work. Every year they denied paying for the screening they required until I fought it for months. Every year.
Imagine how much that costs the health care industry.
The amount of people that doctors have to hire just to get paid is absolutely unacceptable.
The health insurance industry has become the problem.
It is time for single payer.
I believe your comment holds the answer to why health insurance is & will always be fucked. Their bloated incompetence creates jobs. It’s feeding both itself & the economy while sucking the citizens dry
It isn't incompetence, it is immorality.
Insurance companies don't care about the devastated people and business they leave in their wake.
Every dollar they can avoid paying goes right into the pocket of the CEO, which is why no one cares that he was gunned down.
Bad things happen to bad people.
Worked for a bill review company many years ago. Raises by how many claims/hr and $$ saved (denials/downcoding) No medical exp. Fast typer. School & career change; have been in healthcare last 30 years. Patients rage at us daily because of insurance policies. Ins co’s have eroded pt/dr relations
How would I know if this is a good time to buy or not? If we are truly going into this capitalist hellscape, then might as well just jump in with both feet!! Time to short UHC
This morning, the story comes out that United Healthcare won't pay for anesthesia longer than a company ascertained time-line for surgery. So if theres complications, you'll owe the anesthesiologist
You would think that a company whose business is all about collecting & disseminating data in order to form their policies would’ve been less shocked that this move was at the ready
Bc some ppl may not know: for disabled ppl under 65, there can be very few options for insurance depending on your state:
-You are not eligible to buy under the ACA, you can only buy MedAdv.
-Comps aren't required to insure disabled under 65.
-You could have no MedAdv plans avail to you... #Disabled
...which means no insurance besides MedOrig (A and/or B, depending on your work hours) - so no prescription covg, you're responsible for 20% care plus 100% prescriptions, and you're DISABLED.
-I had one comp last year offering plans to ppl under 65, this year 2, but never heard of other one, so...
...stayed with UH.
I'm lucky to live in a state that has insurance for ppl like me.

United told a friend of mine she could have surgery but no coverage for things like the IV lines to get sedation & fluids in her. They use AI to review claims & it denies 90% of them. People are fed up. I don't condone violence however they need to realize there's a limit to what people will take.
People are programmed so much that they think this is the only way things can be. They don’t imagine a better way of life. People who espouse that notion in America get shot
I understand the reason why this happened. I'm surprised it's an isolated incident. With the denial rate of 32%, it was inevitable. United removed the names of their executives from their website? If the situation doesn't change, they will soon go outside with presidential security teams only.
I DO condone it. If people in power won't be decent human beings on their own then others have to "motivate" the rest of them. Only way to solve the problem. Voting sure as he'll won't.
I was told at a recent colonoscopy that if they found a problem during what is supposed to be a free and recommended health scan, it could be reclassified as "diagnostic" and wouldn't be covered as preventative. FFS.
What do you mean by "livebug"? In my world as a software tester in UK that would mean a defect in code being experienced by users. Here it seems to mean a piece of code that updates in real-time. Is that what you mean? Thanks 😊
"bug" comes from the days of television, where you'd have a small overlaid graphic on top of whatever else was showing on the channel (like a bug on the glass screen). sometimes a station id, the current time and temperature, ect. if it updated or moved around, they call it "live"
If you want to destroy Medicare, assassinate one of the CEOs. Strike fear, & destruction is easier.
Who else sees 45 & Cronies' hand in this?
#Make45Pay
Not to be harsh but another cockroach is happy because he will get that salary, title and his office. It won’t stop.
No street adjacent building cameras? In NYC???? 🤔 Mmmk
I'm not gonna celebrate anyone's death, not even marmalade mao, but I'm not gonna cry over a health insurance company CEO's death. That guy was part of the problem, don't let them deify him.
Yeah, this is obviously just a tiny portion of repayment of the debt the billionaire class owes the working class. Someone made the calculation, a life for a life & I honestly don't GAF. 🤷🏼♀️
the upper tiers of corporate america are filled to the brim with utterly rotten/worthless people who believe in nothing beyond maximizing profit and even considering those terms shit done by the insurance industry STILL manages to stand out as being oppressively evil.
When you rake in the kind of money he was making, and socking away, you really aren't put out by medical bills.
And someone in his position knows that you should never pay what the provider bills uninsured people. You tell them that you'll pay only as much as insurance pays or they can sue you.
He was making almost 10 million a year. He'd had to have been worse with money than Mike Tyson and Nicholas Cage combined to not have money that keeps making more money.
Before his death he was the subject of a DOJ insider trading investigation. His widow may end up disgorging millions to make that go away. Sure, he can't be prosecuted now, but the DOJ can force a civil judgment.
"Gee golly, someone murdered the CEO of an insurance company? Why EVER would someone do THAT?"
The amazing thing is, I don't actually have any idea. None of us do. But the fact that what I'm implying is more than a little likely should be worrying for everyone.
Look, I'm not saying that we should test out if this always holds true in this scenario, but I'm also saying that a complete data set would be interesting to observe.
Daaaamn. Next time someone asks me what I mean when I say “terminal late-stage capitalism” I’m just going to pull up this screengrab and show it to them.
I just completed an annual "what is insider trading" training at work, and I hope next year's training on this subject will include a detailed review of these trades and what the SEC thinks about them.
Gosh, it would be really tragic if this caused a rash of CEOs getting offed in order to spike market prices.
It would be truly terrible if, instead of all the bear raids, pump & dumps, price fixing and other market manipulations... they just decided to axe their least favorite CEO.
When executives of corporations begin to try to hide behind anonymity, you know the turning point is upon us. They'll start trying to run their games from inside bunkers. Let's see who continues to want the job of "top publicly-exposed toadie".
That's just how the markets work. I've recognized this during the pandemic already. Counter intuitive but that's because big players or algorithms speculate on opposites until it plops. Just my layman perspective.
UHC got sued for using AI to automate claim denials, results graphed below. CEO got paid $1M salary + $9M bonus, every year for the last five years, for results like this.
Currently battling with Cigna, shocked they're not further up that list. Literally refusing to pay my surgeon, after they pre-approved surgery for cancer. Ass-elbow disconnect there.
I had Cigna when my 1st was born. Had an emergency C-section. Cigna never paid the anesthesiologist. For 3 yrs I received a bill on his birthday. Fast forward 5 yrs, my 2nd needed to be delivered at a high-care facility. I fought them & won.😲 Tired of these corps getting away with this.

I saw the video. The killer was waiting for him. He knew where he would be an used a silencer. The killer seemed very calm. I have so many questions about motive.
It's basically gonna be the same problem when Martin Shkreli turns up in a river somewhere. It'll be easier to list the people who WOULDN'T want to kill him.
Yes like this woman doesn’t even understand how much insurance costs. It’s giving I don’t understand why they didn’t just have full coverage like my family
they'd have the best plan and plenty of extra money to cover the difference of something big, full preventive care plus immediate care when sick, food and housing security, leisure time, 1000 other stressors removed. so they're less likely to need as much care to start with

Can anyone direct me to that new kindler gentler Bluesky place?
Where do not celebrate murder.
At what point do we just not care because he didn't care about his client's lives?
Karma and all that.
The government of Tennessee literally bombed, from airplanes, striking coal workers. Virginia sheriffs hired Pinkertons to act as armed soldiers against strikers and murdered them.
People fought back and died.
This? This is tame in comparison.
Like, that's a very narrow and clearly defined category right there.
It's up to them to decide what happens next.
If people buy into the narrative that he didn't deserve it, then nothing changes.
is this act of karmic justice immensely satisfying regardless? yes. very yes.
Don't consider them a person
There comes a point where a person gets pushed to the edge and they'll either fight back or die.
As far as I'm concerned this CEO has the blood of every person that was denied Healthcare on their dead hands. So meh
I still think we can be happy when someone so evil is removed from the world.
Crooked insurance CEO hires assassin to shoot him so family can claim insurance money. All because he was about to be caught in some huge scandal that involved $Millions.
We are getting close to the sell signal tho - when’s the inauguration?
Fiduciary duty to Shareholders.
- Any action NOT taken by a CEO that would result in an increase shareholder value..
- is grounds for shareholders to sue that CEO
The game takes a dark turn. CEO's everywhere sweating nervously..
I'm.. sure it's occurred to some of them.
While I don't condone crime, I *do* think business/obscene bonuses should come with some kind of risk. This is an entirely self-created problem too.
That's why I'm supposed to wear glasses .. it was 5.54 something
Everywhere else it is a not-for-profit social service (like the fire department or public schools).
& even in the US it was primarily not-for-profit until the Health Management Act.
& Nixon was no more a crook than any other US president, w/ the possible exception of President Carter.
Why should it?
They will just get a new CEO and business will continue as usual.
There is no real reason to expect this to impact earnings.
They could hire a bagel as the CEO and I would be bullish on it due to the cost savings.
Their ceo was already accused of insider trading, so he is better dead than in the news for that.

Hm.
They're murdering us.
He’s lucky it didn’t hurt more
Every Billionaire needs to fear being seen in Public
And I agree with Robert Reich that a billionaire is a market failure.
hopefully nobody catches on that eliminating overpaid CEOs adds a lot of shareholder value.
And someone in his position knows that you should never pay what the provider bills uninsured people. You tell them that you'll pay only as much as insurance pays or they can sue you.
I know a LOT of people that make $300k that are constantly complaining about having no money.

all I can say is I try to live my life so that people aren’t motivated to assassinate me
Next.
I’m often wrong.
Still I’m going to be very surprised if this is about healthcare coverage.
I could be totally wrong. And I usually wouldn’t comment on a murder like this. But I’d be very surprised if that killing was about healthcare.
kill the ceo, stock prices jump, finance investigations stalled, and the org keeps making money.
It's a perfect hit because the guy has millions of enemies already
That's adding insult to injury.
